Effective and Ethical Recruitment of Vocational Education Students. Overview. ERIC Digest No. 61.
THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC TEXT: Like academic education, vocational education has suffered enrollment problems simply because there are fewer students today than a few years ago. Other factors that have hurt vocational enrollments include recent efforts to increase the number of academic credits required for graduation and, in the case of area vocational-technical schools, negative attitudes toward vocational education on the part of sending school personnel. As a result, vocational educators must either reassess their existing marketing and recruitment strategies or develop such programs. The benefits of a well-conceived recruitment programboth inside and outside the education sectorhave been well documented. Educational marketing and recruitment campaigns must not, however, be developed without a strong concern for the ethicality of all strategies used.

Secondary Transition
All persons with disabilities can live and work as independently as possible with the appropriate supports within the classroom and community. This simple but sound premise justifies the need for comprehensive transitional planning to benefit Pennsylvania's students. The US Congress and the Pennsylvania Legislature have recognized the needs of young people with disabilities by developing and passing a series of laws and regulations to mandate and facilitate transition activities and services. This section is devoted to transition. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 1990 and its reauthorization, IDEA of 1997, mandate that IEPs include "A statement of needed transition services for students beginning no later than age 16 and annually thereafter (and when determined appropriate for the individual, beginning at age 14 or younger), including, when appropriate, a statement of the interagency responsibilities or linkages (or both) before the student leaves school". IDEA also calls for the participation of both parents and student in the IEP process.

Vocational, Technical and Career Programs
According to the United States Department of Labor, there will be fewer unskilled workers needed; however, there will be a need for more professional, technical, clerical, sales, and skilled workers. Chartiers Valley High School offers courses to meet the needs of students with vocational interests and abilities. If students do not take advantage of the high school vocational courses, specialized occupational training is available in such schools as the junior or community college, technical institutes, nursing, business, trade schools, and also through job training under approved apprenticeship programs. BUSINESS SCHOOL The business school may be known as a secretarial school, secretarial college, or a business college. Universities, junior colleges, and community colleges have departments for business training also. Students interested in continuing their education in such fields as secretarial, business machine operation, accounting, word and data processing, economics, or business administration usually enroll in some type of business school. Training time may vary from six weeks to four years. As business schools differ in offerings, cost, size and location, selection should be based on the type of preparation the student is seeking. A good business school will prepare students for a lifetime of jobs by equipping them to be competent employees.
