Search the World Wide Web to learn about patterns. The following web sites provide information about patterns: Use a web search tool to learn how patterns are used in everyday life. Consider using "geometric pattern" or the name of a specific type of pattern, such as "wallpaper pattern," "frieze pattern," "tiling pattern," "carpet pattern," or "quilt pattern," as your search terms for key word search tools. Also, you may wish to surf to The Geometry Center , which has its own search tool. Use search tools to explore the patterns used in parking lot layout planning. Prepare a report of your findings. Include in your report images of parking lot layouts and a list of informative web site addresses. For each web address, provide a brief paragraph describing what can be found at the web address. The following web sites may be useful places to start your search about parking lot layouts:

    Exploring Geometric Puzzles
    Getting Started
      Materials you will need:
      • At least two 8.5 11 sheets of cardboard Graph paper Isometric dot paper Ruler Scissors Poster board (optional) Folder or notebook
      Introduction
What is it about puzzles that make them so popular? Is it that they always have a clear solution, in contrast to real-life problems? Or is it the way simple tasks can become complex and complex ones simple? Whatever the reasons, people have been solving puzzles since at least 2200 B.C. when magic squares were popular in China.
Internet Tip: Before you begin making tangrams and building Soma pieces, investigate sites in Hot Links where you can experiment with tongram puzzles (similar to tangrams) and build Soma pieces.
      Find Out by Doing
The tangram, known in China as the ch'i-ch'iao t'u, meaning "ingenious seven-piece plan," is one of the oldest manipulative puzzles. You can use paper folding to make your own tangram.
      • Fold a square sheet of paper in half four times and then unfold it. Draw the segments shown to form seven tangram pieces, called tans.

    MATHEMATICS: GEOMETRY
The Geometry series, Shapes in Space , provides lessons for first through middle school grades and gives students rich experiences with both two- and three-dimensional shapes. The content of the programs is correlated to the California Standards and NCTM standards. Students are introduced to properties and attributes of geometric shapes, angle measures, area and perimeter, transformations, and symmetry. Pre and Post Tests are available and can be downloaded from the TEAMS Website. Teaching Geometry Concepts: Staff Development
    Two 60-minute staff development programs
These staff development programs help teachers understand geometry and the instructional strategies for effectively teaching geometry concepts. Program design, teacher guides, and online opportunities for students, teachers, and parents are explored. Strategies and resources are presented to help students learn how to use technology as a tool for processing information, visualizing and solving problems, exploring and testing conjectures, accessing data, and verifying solutions. Geometry Concepts for Primary Grades: Grades 1-2
    Six 30-minute student programs
This module stresses the development of geometric ideas through activities that engage students in doing, thinking, and reflecting on geometric concepts. Activities help build self-confidence, nurture natural curiosity, and challenge students with rich problems that help them learn to appreciate and value mathematics. The content includes Sorting Geometric Shapes, Classifying Geometric Shapes, Discovering Attributes of Geometric Shapes, Constructing Shapes, Slides, Flips, and Turns and Three-Dimensional Geometry.

Many of these stations have been designed as an assessment tool for the objectives of the new curriculum. However, teachers may choose to use these as introductory activities, practise activities or centre activities.
These stations lend themselves well to the adaptive dimension of the Core Curriculum. See The Adaptive Dimension in the Core Curriculum available in all schools. The document can be ordered from the Book Bureau (#1655). Changes can be made to the context or to the level of difficulty to adapt to the individual needs in your classroom. Similar stations can be created by using activities from textbooks and other resources.

    Pentominoes
Pentominoes are shapes that use five square blocks joined edge to edge to form various combinations. There are twelve possible shapes in a set of unique pentominoes, named T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z, F, I, L, P, and N. An easy way to remember all the letters in a pentominoes set is to look at the word, FILiPiNo, and remember the end of the alphabet, TUVWXYZ. Pentominoes are said to have been "invented" by Solomon W. Golomb in 1953 at a talk he gave to the Harvard Mathematics Club. Although he came up with the name, pentominoes have been around since a much earlier time. The first pentomino problem, written by the great English inventor of puzzles, Henry Ernest Dudeny, was published in 1907 in the Canterbury Puzzles. The twelve pentominoes are often referred to by the letters they resemble. There are about as many puzzles and games using pentominoes as there are people who play with them. Here are a few examples. There are many more puzzles and solutions all over the internet and in the book Polyominoes by Solomon Golomb.
