Sharing borders with Ecuador, Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, and Chile, Peru is one of the largest countries in South America. Its unique environmental variations encompass the Andean sierra or mountains, the arid coastal desert, and the Amazonian tropical forests. With so many ecosystems and climatic zones, it should come as no surprise that Peru is a country rich in biodiversity, with many rare species of flora and fauna.
With such extreme geographical variations, Peru's climate differs significantly among regions. While the valleys tend to maintain a moderate temperature, the highlands are dry and cool during much of the year, and the tropical lowlands are hot and humid. The country has suffered through historical cycles of flash flooding and drought. Like many other areas in the Americas, Peru is subject to occasional tremors and earthquakes, particularly in the northern coastal area.
Economy and Government
Peru's president is popularly elected for a five-year term. The principal executive body is the Council of Ministers, headed by a prime minister and appointed by the president. The legislative branch consists of a unicameral Congress of 120 members. The judicial branch is headed by a 16-member Supreme Court seated in Lima. In 1996, an ombudsman's office was created to address human rights issues.

BACKGROUND introducing the area
culture and customs
quotes about culture and customs key testimonies featuring culture and customs Anyone reading these interviews is left with a sense of a still vibrant culture. While many narrators emphasise the declining importance of tradition to recent generations, young and old alike describe with enthusiasm games, dances, songs, special foods, festivals, and other celebrations. Some are not as lavish as they used to be; others have been affected by the changes in the social and physical landscape. Modification is not new: several point out how the influx of outsiders who came to work in the mines brought new customs and music which were gradually absorbed into the local culture. One felt this was enriching; another that local custom lost out to "foreign" influence. Some customs date back to the Spanish colonial era; others are more purely Andean. Many festivities are connected to religion; others celebrate age-old aspects of rural life. And some combine the different elements. Despite the pollution of the land, the loss of livestock, and the decline of herding as a way of life, for example, people still celebrate their connection with the mountain: "Grandfather" or "the Great Shepherd". "The animals' feast is celebrated with Carnival in February and March. We begin with the first ritual which is taking a table up the mountain with an offering of coca, liquor, fruit and sweets. We take this offering to the mountain, the patron of the animals, because the mountain looks after the animals and all livestock-owners have absolute faith in him..." (Peru 30)

74. The Peru Reader
"This is an extremely deep, broad and insightful collection on peru."Jorge Castaneda .Category Regional South America peru Arts and Entertainment...... This book is as indispensable for the firsttime visitor to peru as for the seriousstudent of Latin American history and culture. Michael F. Brown, author
http://ist-socrates.berkeley.edu/~dolorier/Reader/Reader.html
The PERU READER Sixteenth-century Spanish soldiers described it as a land filled with gold and silver, a land of untold wealth. To the Europeans who heard these stories it was a place of tantalizing mystery that mirrored dreams and desires unsatisfied by the Old World. Nineteenth-century travelers wrote of soaring Andean peaks plunging into luxuriant Amazonian canyons of orchids, pythons, and jaguars. Early twentieth-century adventurer Hiram Bingham told of the raging rivers and the wild jungles he traversed on his way to "discover" the "Lost City of the Incas," Machu Picchu. The richest treasures, the bloodiest conquest, the most poignant ballads, the most violent revolutionariesall have been attributed to Peru.
Unparalleled in its scope, comprehensive, and written for the traveler and specialist alike, The Peru Reader
"This is an extremely deep, broad and insightful collection on Peru." Jorge Castaneda Newsweek columnist and author of Utopia Unarmed: The Latin American Left after the Cold War
"A livelier, more literate introduction to a foreign world could not be hoped for. A Peruvian trove, indeed; so much that one hardly knows where to begin dipping into its treasures."

    Located in northwestern South America between Ecuador and Chile, Peru is slightly smaller than the state of Alaska. The mighty Andes Mountains bisect the country, separating the lush Amazon River basin in the east and the coastal plain along the Pacific Ocean. Lima, Peru's largest city, also is its capital. "Peru at a Glance" Capital: Lima Size: 496,225 square miles. Slightly smaller than Alaska. Population: 27 million. Nearly one-third of the country's people live in Lima. System of Government: Constitutional Republic President: Alejandro Toledo (President Elect) Religion: Roman Catholic Languages: Spanish, Quechua, Aymara (unofficial) Life expectancy: 70 years Interesting Fact: 72 percent of Peru's population lives in urban areas. Nearly 500 years ago, the quest for silver and gold brought the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro to present-day Peru. High in the Andes, Pizarro's small army encountered the Inca, a civilization that held the conquistador's coveted treasure. Strong as they were, the Incas could not repel the Europeans, and within 40 years their empire was destroyed. Spanish colonists soon migrated to the coast, where they established their own system of government, law and commerce. After a series of rebellions, Peru declared its independence from Spain in 1824. However, it wasn't until 1879, after a long conflict, that Spain recognized Peru's sovereignty. In 1873, Chile defeated Peru in the War of the Pacific, resulting in a period of economic and political turmoil that continued well into the 20th century.

    In 1970, a major earthquake shook Peru. Approximately 67,000 people died and more than 600,000 were left homeless after the catastrophe. At the request of the Peruvian government, CARE began working in Peru to aid earthquake victims. Today, CARE helps implement development projects throughout the country. Examples of projects include:
    • providing clean water and improving sanitation;
    • helping women get credit and training to start or expand small businesses;
    • improving the health and nutrition of rural children; and
    • increasing food security among farm families.
    CARE projects in Peru are helping more than 1 million of the country's poorest people in their fight to overcome poverty. For more information on CARE's work in Peru, click here.
