Typically these birds will have been recently captured from tropical countries (legally or illegally) and are offered as pet birds. Species include African and Timneh grey parrots, Amazon parrots, macaws, cockatoos, finches, toucans and mynah birds. Death rates to these highly stressed birds are very high... 1. The relevant legislation is the Pet Animals Act 1951, amended in 1983. This empowers local authority environmental health officers to regulate the sale of pet animals by issuing licences to those who wish to trade in pets. Licenses can only be issued with respect to fixed premises operating as pet shops, not markets or stalls in public places. 2. See the Chartered Institute for Environmental Health's formal notice to all Chief Environmental Health Officers. 3. Some bird keepers, who are fighting for better conditions for the birds, have come under vicious attack in the bird keeping press. Here, traders fearing their 'rights' to trade in birds are under attack have thrown verbal abuse at those who are working to help the birds.

    Summary
    Introduction

Avian chlamydiosis is an important disease that has historically affected aviculture for decades. Disease impact ranges directly from overt clinical disease and mortality to the often non-diagnosed effects on growth, health, and reproduction. The Chlamydia psittaci organism exhibits a pronounced variability in host susceptibility, pathogenicity, course of disease, and diagnostic parameters. While numerous diagnostic methods have become available over the years, test results are often equivocal, making a confirmed diagnosis elusive. Chlamydial Infection
The elementary body is the infective form of the Chlamydial organism which reproduces by infecting a host cell. Generally this occurs at the initial site of infection. The columnar epithelium of the mucous membranes (and macrophages) lining the respiratory or digestive route is generally the first area involved. During this localized phase, the chlamydial organism enters the host cell, undergoes transition to a large reticulate body (inclusion) and through growth and division, produces between 100-500 chlamydial bodies per cell. Approximately 48 hours post infection, the cell may rupture, releasing these infective organisms. Sometimes however, cells do not lyse, causing them to remain chronically infected for long periods of time.

Common Pet Birds We would like to provide some information about a variety of common pet birds. We hope the information on these pages will help you determine the perfect bird for you. Before you jump into buying that cute little bird you saw once or heard about, it is well worth your time to research it. Some birds are more difficult to handle than others. The worst thing that can happen is to find out you made a really big mistake, both for you and the bird.
    The Second-Hand Parrot
Most birds end up with at least 2 homes in their lives either due to longevity (outliving their owners) or owners who have taken on much more than they ever thought possible. Changing homes is very difficult for a bird. Probably more than any other pet. There are things that one would never know at decision time, but there are things that one should know. What we can't know is what our lives will be like 1,5,10 years down the road. We could have different jobs, different work hours, changes in family life. What one can know is typical behaviors and needs of these precious birds. It is a responsibility to know, understand, and evaluate. Impulse decisions should be avoided at all cost.

Pet birds can be quite an investment, so it's important to care for them properly. If you want to keep a bird, get rid of all your Teflon-coated pots and pans. If Teflon is scorched, it gives off toxic fumes that can kill birds. If your bird starts to seem depressed, it's probably sick. If it moves down to the bottom of its cage, it's probably too late to save it. Exotic birds generally need a good base diet of seeds and pellets. However, they also need items from the four basic food groups. In fact, they often like the same foods you eat, such as pinto beans, cornbread, chicken and other common dishes. Most birds have the ability to talk, but they need a lot of practice before they learn how. It usually takes about two months of repeating a word over and over before a bird learns it. Keeping two birds in the same cage will reduce their tendency to speak. One popular bird is the macaw ( figure A ), which costs about $1,500 and can live 80 years with good care. The macaw is a high-maintenance bird that must be kept out of drafts and protected from excessive heat. In general, a temperature that's comfortable for you is probably comfortable for the bird.
