General Care of Pet Birds
by Terry Beaudoin Once again it is time to update our day-to-day care article. As several avian experts have stated: our knowledge of the 'proper' routine care (veterinary or in-home) seems to double about every two years. As we hear of these changes in the understanding of bird care we will update this article to reflect the most up to date information available to us. Along with some of the most respected bird specialists (most notably Sally Blanchard of The Pet Bird Information Council) in the country we recommend AGAINST using a grate on the bottom of your birds cage. The primary reasons for this are: it is virtually impossible to keep a grate clean - repeated scrubbing (unfortunately most people do not clean their birds grate regularly) also tends to wear the finish off of these grates. Many grates have been found to contain enough zinc (zinc toxicity is covered in depth in an article titled "There's Something About Zinc" Change your bird's dry foods (pellets, seed, etc.) daily. Refrigerate (do not freeze) all of your bird's food that contains seeds or nuts (freezing these foods leads to nutritional loss after approximately two weeks). Formulated diets (i.e.: Harrison's, Scenic or Roudybush) can be either frozen or refrigerated. These foods will stay at least six months when stored this way.

TRAVELING WITH PET BIRDS
May/June 2000 WATCHBIRD
By Carolyn Swicegood
T hat time of year is here again. As the days grow longer, we daydream of faraway places and we long for a change of scenery. But waitwhat about the birds? How could we possibly enjoy traveling with nagging worries about our feathered friends left behind? Maybe we could ask a trusted friend to come in and care for them, but what if the birds stop eating? What if the caregiver forgets something? What if a bird becomes ill while we are away? Maybe that trip was not such a good idea after all. Perhaps we should just stay at home and save the worry and the expense of a bird sitter! There is an enjoyable option bring the birds along! After all, if we have the urge to fly the coop, just imagine how exciting a trip could be for our wild friends who were meant to travel the skies daily! Take to the air or hit the road with your feathered flock and enjoy your trip as well as your birds. Here are a few travel ideas to consider. AIRLINE FLYING Most airlines require a health certificate issued within 10 days before the flight. It is important to make arrangements with the airline well in advance of the departure date. Birds should be listed for the flight at the same time as human passengers. International travel requires much more advance planning than travel within the country. Double check the regulations required for animals to enter and leave a foreign country. It is most important to determine whether regulations require the quarantining of birds in either country. Some countries require up to six months quarantine of pets entering the country.

1. PRE-PURCHASE INFORMATION back
Owning a bird as a pet has been popular since the Victorian era, when the parlor was not considered completely decorated unless it had a canary in a very small brass cage residing on a table in a corner. It has been only recently, however, that the health and management of pet birds has become a real concern of the pet bird breeder, owner and Veterinarian. Pet birds are no longer maintained in overly small, ornate cages that do not allow for social contact. Large bright airy cages, along with improved dietary management, have increased the life-span and reproductive efficiency of most of the pet bird species.
Birds can be purchased from a variety of sources, such as pet shops, breeders, private dealers, or individuals. If you are buying a bird for the first time it is almost essential that you purchase your bird from someone who is in the bird breeding and/or selling business. These individuals usually have a reputation to protect; ask around and find out who in your area is known to deal honestly and fairly with buyers. Many stores today, especially those specializing in birds, have been operated by bird fanciers who have turned their hobby into a business; they usually know and care about their birds. They will have in stock items required for basic care and maintenance of birds, such as play toys, cages, bird feed and general health supplies. Sales personnel will generally offer you more information than you ever thought necessary to get you started, so leave yourself plenty of time to shop!

Egg laying in birds

It often comes as a surprise to the owner of a female bird that their pet can lay eggs without the presence of a male. Such eggs are, of course, infertile and will not hatch even if incubated. This can occur in any breed, but is more common in cockatiels, lovebirds, budgies, canaries and finches. Egg laying can start anytime from 5 months to over 10 years of age. Egg laying is a natural, seasonal process in wild birds, breeding birds and some pets. However, it can also become an obsession that drains the bird of vital nutrients, ruins her pet quality, and predisposes her to life-threatening health problems such as egg binding and yolk peritonitis. A bird in the peak of health on an ideal diet my be able to sustain egg production of up to 10-20 eggs per year without serious harm. Beyond that number, egg laying will have serious consequences sooner or later, no matter how the bird looks. For a bird that eats a seed based diet or has an underlying health problem any egg laying at all is dangerous.

Located In The Beautiful Hill Country Of Texas
Species Available as Companion Birds
The following list of species are bred at Hill Country Aviaries, L.L.C. primarily for the companion or avicultural trade. Since most parrot species can make good companions, the criteria we use to decide whether a bird qualifies for the "pet trade" is its availability in captivity. In other words, we try not to sell rare birds into a pet home unless the owners are planning to someday breed them. What Makes a Good Pet Bird? Many people claim that one species or another does not make a good pet by virtue of its "wild" nature. Although there is some truth to this statement, we believe that the socialization of the bird in its youth is much more important than its genetic background. We have proven this time and time again by socializing the young of some of the most aggressive species and turning them into loving and wonderful pet birds. Everybody has a bad day...and it's not always the nature of the beast! Eclectus Parrot- Pictured to the left is a male Eclectus parrot. In our experience, Eclectus parrots can make some of the best pets and very talented talkers. At HCA we breed several species of Eclectus parrots and find them all to be good pets.

At BirdCentric, whether they are parrots or parakeets, we offer a variety of nutritious and tasty foods and treats, entertaining toys and accessories for your pet birds! We even have speech-training tools, jungle gyms and shower perches. Caring for Pet Birds
If you are preparing to welcome a bird into your home, here are some things to look for when making your selection. Healthy birds are active, have bright eyes, clean feathers and a good appetite. An unhealthy bird appears ruffled or tired and will often hide his head under a wing. Sitting at the bottom of the cage, sneezing, nasal discharge or droppings stuck to the tail feathers are all signs of poor health.
There are a wide variety of bird cages available. Choose the largest cage you possibly can, while ensuring that the space between the bars is smaller than the width of your bird’s head. In addition to a cage pet birds require toys for entertainment, an appropriate selection of food and treats (many of which double as entertainment), and perches. If you plan on training your birds to talk, start early. Check out our selection of bird necessities and speech training aids. Click on an image to view products.

LONGEVITY - It is difficult to locate any statistics on the life span of pet birds. This is due in large part to the recent advances in diet, husbandry, and Veterinary care available.
Finches 8 - 10 years
Canaries 10 - 15 years
Budgerigars ("parakeets") 10 - 15 years
Larger Psittacines 25 - 50 years or more
FEATHER FACTS

BITING - One of the main forms of expression for a pet bird is using its beak. This does not mean that biting should be allowed. On the other hand, neither does it mean that every time a bird puts its beak on you they are going to bite. As you become more familiar with your bird and its habits, you will be able to understand its moods. Biting is something you should deal with. If your bird is aggressively biting, talk to your Veterinarian, breeder, or members of a bird club to learn how to deal with it.

The Pet Birds of Shady Pines
Captain (Alexandrine Parakeet '87 hatch)
Captain came to us as a 3 year old feather chewer. Extensive veterinary testing determined his chewing is psychological and there has been some improvement over the years. Although not fond of hands or fingers, he will sit on anyone's shoulder for hours giving kisses. He especially loves meeting new people and children. He is an excellent talker but his vocabulary is limited to a few phrases. For more photos of Captain, click here!
Tuki (African Grey '90 hatch)
African Greys are noted for their excellent talking ability, however Tuki must have read the wrong book. Although her speech is excellent, her vocabulary is extremely limited. She is very bonded to Ron, tolerates Gloria, and barely tolerates everyone else! For more photos of Tuki, click here!
Teddy (Quaker '91 hatch)
Teddy came to us at about 10 months old. Our best talker, he has been know to learn new words and phrases in a very short time. He is quite adept at making his needs and wants known, using the correct words for the situation such as "is it good?" and "mmm good" if he wants a taste of something you are eating or "Rub-a-dub-dub, Teddy in the bathtub" when he want to take a bath. He is super possessive of his cage and surrounding territory, very typical behavior for a quaker. For more photos of Teddy, or to hear him talk and sing click here!
