Course Description
This course focuses on those German-Jewish philosophers (Cohen, Buber, Rosenzweig) whose work has shaped what we understand by Jewish philosophy in the 20th century. We will then read some works by French and American thinkers (Levinas, Soloveitchik, Heschel) who were influenced by the German-Jewish philosophical legacy and have in their turn made important contributions to contemporary Jewish thought. In moving, roughly chronologically, through the works of these thinkers, we will examine how each understands the relationship between Judaism and philosophy, and how each makes the distinction or conjunction of these two entities or terms productive for his thought. We will also look at the historical and cultural contexts of their thought, especially those developments which helped shape the situation of Jews in Germany in the early 20th century. Questions to be considered include: Can there be such a thing as a Jewish philosophy, or a philosophy of Judaism? How have Jewish traditions in the broadest sense participated in the philosophical canon or in philosophical questioning? If we understand philosophy as having a claim to universal validity, what does it mean to emphasize its historically or culturally determinate sources (such as Greek or Judeo-Christian)? What can philosophy tell us about Judaism, e.g, about means of Jewish identification, about the nature of Jewish law and religious observance, or about the role of politics and history?

Baby Superstore THE PHILOSOPHY OF RATIONALISM The prejudice shared by Rationalism and Empiricism is that man does not know things directly but grasps only their impressions (phenomena). Rationalism is concerned with the impressions made on the intellect, Empiricism with those on the senses. Hence the question arises: Can the knowing subject be certain of the existence of known objects? If so, to what extent can he be certain? Both Rationalism and Empiricism needed a new method; the former adopted mathematical deduction, the latter scientific induction.

(Hobart) Studies the development of philosophical ideas in the modern period, starting from the Renaissance and going through to the present day. Students see where those ideas came from and how they gave rise to traditions: how the ideas of Descartes, Leibniz, Spinoza and others formed one tradition; how the ideas of Hobbes, Locke, Berkeley, Hume and others formed a second; and how these two traditions gave rise to a third, the tradition of Kant and his followers. They will then be able to follow those traditions into the 20th century, where they are vigorously alive in the thought and writings of English-speaking philosophers and Continental philosophers alike. The unit will be useful not only to students of philosophy but also to students of history, literature, ancient civilisations, art, and religion.

History of Philosophy: Modern Course Syllabus
Required Text: Modern Philosophy, 3rd edition (Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice Hall, 2000). Course Description: This course will introduce students to some of the main philosophical texts of the modern period. We will read selections from Descartes, Locke, Berkeley, Hume, and Kant. The material to be discussed constitutes some of the most important, and challenging, work for students in the history of philosophy. We begin with the rationalism of Descartes; we will read his Meditations on First Philosophy, paying close attention to his skeptical hypothesis and his proposed answer to it; the distinction between mind and body; the nature of mind; the nature of our knowledge of our own minds; and arguments for the existence of God. We then turn to the first of three British Empiricists. Locke maintains that the human mind is a tabula rasa at birth, and that the only method to achieve any knowledge is through sense experience. We will discuss Locke's arguments against innate knowledge, his theory of ideas, his distinction between primary and secondary qualities, and his account of the nature of substance. Berkeley's theory is one of the most eccentric, and closely argued, positions in all of philosophy. We will see that although Berkeley agrees with Locke that there can be no innate ideas, he objects to Locke's account of the distinction between primary and secondary qualities and Locke's account of the nature of substance. Berkeley instead argues that we have no reason to believe in substance at all. Rather, the only things with which we are acquainted, and the only things we have any reason in which to believe, are ideas. We will spend some time examining Berkeley's odd, but powerful, idealism.
