Special "Funding for Children and Youth Month" Spotlight On Meet the Successful Grantseekers The Foundation Center - Cleveland is pleased to be able to provide the following interview with two successful and seasoned grantseekers sharing information and tips from their own experiences seeking funding for youth-related programs. Nonprofits serving children and youth are confronting the realities of a sluggish economy and its impact on their financial capacity to maintain current levels of service while also responding to new needs. In these difficult times financial sustainability is key to continuing success, whether an organization is a small, grassroots agency, or a larger established organization.
We are speaking today with Ward Pallotta , CFRE, who has been a professional fundraiser for sixteen years and is currently Director of Development for Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry where he has raised money for youth-related projects such as "After School Prevention Resources" and the Westhaven Youth Shelter.

Today's Mystery Marker
Thanks to the help of our many guests, all the flagholders so far
presented have been identified. This brings us back to good old BARC which was the
mystery marker for a long time summer 2000 and never identified.
See the BARC page in the section below
for details of what we know - and don't know - so far. This collection of photographs of Commemorative Plaques and Flag Holders found in cemeteries was begun in June 2000. Flagholders are present in most cemeteries and we tend to overlook them. We genealogists focus on the names and the tombstones and pay little attention to these markers. It isn't until we stop and take a closer look that we realize the diversity that exists and the local history that is preserved in the older markers. It becomes like a treasure hunt to tour a cemetery to find a marker you have not seen before. Some are old and rusted and some are brand new and shiny. Besides being interesting and reflecting history, the flagholders are really very beautiful and their diversity is captivating. Every cemetery is different in the frequency and mix of flagholders. In some, where a fire department is active, Fire Department member flagholders and their characteristic red flag, may outnumber all other military and organizational markers combined. In others, tragically, there are almost no flagholders of any kind to be found. This is probably a reflection of the cemetery caretaker staff that can't be bothered with them and has removed them. Much history is lost and honor that was left for the dead has been taken. I have been in areas where a cemetery with thousands of burials has almost no flagholders at all where flags are stuck directly into the ground, and another of equivalent size a couple of miles away may have almost as many flagholders as tombstones. Both American and organizational flags may be displayed in these flagholders.

Bringing "family" back into families

Let me tell you a short but saddeningly true story: In 1993, our family became separated by divorce. Since then, just being able to see each other and love each other has become not a challenge, but an impasse.

JOE WELLS JR. ESTABLISHES HALF MILLION TRUST TO BENEFIT FIVE EAST LIVERPOOL CHARITIES!
One of East Liverpool's best known citizens, industrial leader and community booster of major proportions has established a large trust to benefit five local charities. Joe Wells Jr., long-time executive with the Homer Laughlin China Company, has named the East Liverpool High School Alumni Association, the East Liverpool YMCA, East Liverpool City Hospital, Tri-State Citizens Scholarship Foundation and the Lou Holtz/Upper Ohio Valley Hall of Fame as beneficiaries of the trust.
The trust, fully funded during the great year of 1998, consists entirely of stock with a present value in the range of $500,000. It provides percentages in various amounts to the organizations.
Joe Wells Jr. has been a friend to the East Liverpool area in a variety of ways. He is a native of Newell, WV, and was graduated from Western Reserve Academy at Hudson, Ohio. Following attendance at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, he returned to Homer Laughlin where he has been employed since the early 1930's.
The accomplished Wells has held virtually every position with the world-famed dinner ware manufacturer and still reports for duty each day. He has overseen the revival of the company's famed Fiestaware in recent years, a phenomenal success story that has returned Homer Laughlin to a prominent position in world china manufacturing.

49. John Reilly Assoc. International. Partnering & Teambuilding
Mutual respect within and between organizations; Equitable risk sharing; Honestyand evaluated based on valueadded; Prevention-based philosophy - risk assessment
http://www.johnreillyassociates.com/services/pt.htm
Success in large complex programs is not achieved by individuals. Success requires carefully selected teams of dedicated professionals working together towards well-defined goals. Within these teams individual creativity - fostered and encouraged, but carefully tested - contributes to increased productivity quality and value.
Large public works underground and infrastructure programs require a balance of individual responsibility and team accountability in an integrated customer - supplier environment. People are critically important, so it is necessary to understand and clearly define their roles and responsibilities - in relationship to critical goals and objectives - to increase performance and reliability.
We apply specific management and human resource tools through partnering and teambuilding processes to improve project working environments in order to:
  • Meet technical, cost, schedule, quality and other "must-achieve" goals
  • Minimize cost overruns, schedule slip, disputes, claims and litigation
  • Increase innovation, value and opportunity for improvement

Goals
This association is an initiative by the supporters of philosophies of cognition. A philosophy of cognition deals with the change and devolpment of persons through self-achieved cognitions. Therefore one gains a greater understanding and responsibility to oneself, others and to one's entire environment. The philosophy of Scientology is hereby of prime interest. It draws its roots to a great extent from Buddhism. The philosophy states in general that man can free himself from undesirable circumstances through his own power with help from a precise technology of the mind. We stand behind this philosophy and have had good experiences with the use of this technology. The association emphatically separates itself from the official and unofficial organizations of the Church of Scientology. Our goal is to freely use the technology and philosophy of L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology. In our opinion the free and unrestricted pursuit of Scientology is currently impossible both in the Church of Scientology and in society in general.
