Philosophy For over a decade we have been producing a range of publications aimed at different groups engaged in various types of drug use, as well as publications aimed at young people or parents who choose not to use drugs but are living in a world profoundly affected by drug use. Our publications are produced with drug users. We believe this is vital for them to be found accessible and credible by the target audience. The publications can be used in different ways and in a variety of settings. Our aim is to provide credible up-to-date information free from any political agenda or moralising. This on its own will not stop people using drugs, there is no evidence that any form of mass media will do this. However you have to start somewhere. We believe the best way is to be honest and to reflect the world as it is for many people engaged in drug use. If you over exaggerate the risks of all drugs nobody will believe you when there are real dangers. Humour and "offensive" language are used in some of our publications which is both a reflection of real patterns of speech and a way of distancing them from any form of officialdom that is often distrusted by young people.

The Logical and Metaphysical Foundations of Classical Mathematics
What is the nature of our mathematical knowledge? The great 19th century German philosopher/mathematician, Gottlob Frege, famously attempted to show that the fundamental laws of classical arithmetic and analysis are theorems of pure logic. If this were true, mathematical knowledge would be of a piece with knowledge of logic. Notoriously, Frege's programme failed, his system collapsing into inconsistency. He himself then renounced the whole approach and three generations of philosophers agreed that he was right to do so. The publication in 1983 of Crispin Wright's Frege's Conception of Numbers as Objects (FCNO), marked the start of a period of active reappraisal of Frege's attempt. Wright argued that, at least as far as number-theory (the theory of the finite cardinals) is concerned, important formal and philosophical insights can be salvaged from the wreckage of Frege's account. In view of the increasing interest in the main philosophical ideas in FCNO and growing recognition of their technical potential, we now launch a five-year collaborative project to explore the prospects of extending the neo-Fregean approach to real and functional analysis and to classical set theory, and to examine its philosophical significance and problems in greater depth. The neo-Fregean thesis about arithmetic is that knowledge of the basic arithmetical laws (essentially, the Dedekind-Peano axioms)-and hence of the existence of a range of objects which satisfy them-may be based

    SEEKING ASYLUM IN SUNDERLAND
The personal is political so the saying goes. But what about those revelatory moments that happen from time to time, when suddenly the political becomes personal; when the sound-bites and the sweeping generalizations, the statistics and the slogans suddenly fall away to reveal not a government policy, or an international problem, but a human being. My revelatory moment occurred 3 years ago when I was asked to visit a 19 year old asylum seeker from the Congo who was in hospital, receiving treatment for a serious foot injury that the young man had received as he had escaped from the war torn region. He wept as he told me his story, of how his father (who was a Muslim), had been killed by Christian soldiers, who then went on to rape his sister as he was forced to watch. He had managed to escape and come to this country, but he still had no idea if the remaining members of his family were alive or dead. As I sat with him in the side ward, with my clerical collar on, he said to me: "The only thing that matters is that we both believe in God, and that we learn to love one another."
