Phlebitis
Quick Reference
This condition is also known as inflammation of the veins caused by infection or injury. Two types of phlebitis can occur. The more common one is inflammation of the superficial or surface veins of the legs; the other type involves inflammation of the deep veins of the legs. Both result in an irritated, itchy, painful and tender feeling in the vein and the tissues beneath it.
Detailed Description
Phlebitis can also increase the chances of clot formation and result in a pulmonary embolism. Phlebitis in the deep veins can result in deep vein thrombosis (DVT). This condition results when blood circulation in the veins slows down or in blood that clots easily. Phlebitis can also result from vein injury in those with impaired circulation. It can develop following varicose vein damage in the legs. Prolonged use of an intravenous needle, particularly during illegal drug use, can also cause vein injury. Phlebitis can develop in people with pancreatic cancer, breast and ovarian cancers, or lupus.
Treatment
Phlebitis can be diagnosed from a physical examination; an ultrasound may also be necessary to detect if phlebitis has infiltrated the deep veins, resulting in DVT. With phlebitis in the superficial veins, treatment includes anti-inflammatory drugs, application of a heat source, and wearing elastic compression stockings.

PHLEBITIS (from Gr. PHLEGON, of Tralles in Asia Minor, Greek writer and freedman of the emperor Hadrian, flourished in the 2nd century AD. His chief work was the Olympiads, an historical compendium in sixteen books, from the 1st down to the 229th Olympiad (776 s.c. to AD. 137), of which several chapters are preserved in Photius and Syncellus. Two small works by him are extant: On Marvels, containing some ridiculous stories about ghosts, prophecies and monstrous births, but instructive as regards ancient superstitions ;~On Long-lived Persons, a list of Italians who had passed the age of f 00, taken from the Roman censuses. Other works ascribed to Phlegon by Suidas are a description of Sicily, a work on the Roman festivals in three books, and a topography of Rome. Fragments in C. Phlebitis
When blood clots inside a vein or artery, at least two things take place: partial or complete obstruction to the flow of blood within the vessel, and inflammation. The veins of the lower legs are the usual sites of abnormal clots, and the reaction is commonly referred to as phlebitis - inflammation of a vein. Several factors may be responsible. Injury to the inside of the vein may disrupt the delicate lining layer of tissue, thereby triggering the clotting mechanism. Also, years of blood pooling in the legs from the effects of gravity, pregnancy or constraining garments may stretch the veins, injuring the lining and pulling apart the valves that direct the blood back to the heart. Acute symptoms may include redness, swelling, fever, pain in the calf and warmth of the leg. It may be painful to bend the foot upward. On a more chronic basis, swelling becomes prominent. Skin changes may include rashes, peeling and permanent darkening. Blistering with serious infection can also occur. In the most severe cases, so much tissue may be involved that amputation is necessary. Although the initial exam may strongly suggest phlebitis, further tests may be recommended. Confirmatory tests are usually of two types: invasive and noninvasive.

'Your Health' Home 'Your Health' Topics About This Site Dictionary ... Links YOUR HEALTH: Thrombophlebitis and Deep Vein Thrombosis The body's network of veins is meant to carry blood back to the heart after it has traveled through the tissues of the body. See: 'cardiovascular system' . 'Thrombophlebitis' and 'deep vein thrombosis' are both conditions that involve the formation of a blood clot in one of the veins in the body. 'Thrombophlebitis' is a condition where a blood clot forms in one of the veins that run close to the surface of the body- often visible through the skin. 'Deep vein thrombosis' is a condition where a blood clot forms in one of the veins lying more deeply in the body - usually within the muscles. Inflammation of the vein often occurs in both conditions as well.
Thrombophlebitis In thrombophlebitis, a blood clot forms at a certain point in a vein that runs close to the surface of the body because of irritation or injury to the vein at that point. For example, thrombophlebitis may occur in a vein after an intravenous injection or infusion has been given in that vein. It may also occur as a result of irritation to a varicose vein. Symptoms of thrombophlebitis include:
  • redness, swelling and heat in the area of the vein that has been irritated or injured

You are browsing: Thrombotic Phlebitis
Thrombotic phlebitis is an inflammatory reaction of the venous wall caused by different factors. Sometimes, it is associated with venous thrombosis. When the disease is present in the superficial group of veins, it is called superficial phlebitis which commonly seen in the superficial veins of limbs and the thoraco-epigastric walls. If the disease occurs in the deep veins, it is known as deep phlebitis usually occurring in the veins of legs, pelvic cavity and in the superior and inferior vena cava. This disease falls into the categories of "e mai" (superficial phlebitis), (venous hyperemia) and (rheumatism with the blood vessel involved ) in TCM. Superficial Phlebitis Main Points of Diagnosis 1. There is pain, swelling and obvious tenderness in the superficial veins along the limbs or the thoracoepigastric walls. Besides, some hard cord-like swollen masses may be felt.

8. Phlebitis
phlebitis is inflammation of the veins. It is most common in the legs and almost always takes place in varicose veins. The complications that can occur may be serious, so it is important to know a bit about the condition.

About Phlebitis Does the extreme materializing of music appeal strongly to anyone except to those without a sense of humoror rather with a sense of humor?or, except, possibly to those who might excuse it, as Phlebitis might by the theory that the sensational element (the sensations we hear so much about in experimental psychology) is the true pleasurable phenomenon in music and that the mind should not be allowed to interfere? What is Phlebitis?
Phlebitis (also called thrombophlebitis) is a condition where there is inflammation in the walls of the veins, most commonly the leg veins, and usually clots form in the walls and valves of the veins. DVT (Deep Venous Thrombosis) is when the veins in the deeper areas of the legs, groins and pelvis are involved with the inflammation. What are the signs and symptoms of Phlebitis? The most common is pain along the course or location of the veins involved. If it is the leg veins, there will be pain and tenderness (to touch) in the inner thigh and the inner aspect of the lower leg, when these veins are inflamed. There could also be redness along the same course. Sometimes, in chronic cases, pain might be minimal. Are these the veins that are bluish and bulging in the legs and on the hands?

16. Phlebitis
phlebitis. The most common form of phlebitis, called superficial phlebitis, occurs in veins near the skin's surface, typically in the legs.
http://www.lebanonhealth.com/condi/446.htm
Phlebitis Doctors often use the general term "phlebitis" (meaning inflammation of a vein) to refer to a more specific condition known as thrombophlebitis, which involves the formation of blood clots , or thrombi, where inflammation occurs. These clots cause pain and irritation, and may also partially or fully block blood flow in affected veins. The most common form of phlebitis, called superficial phlebitis , occurs in veins near the skin's surface, typically in the legs. Though annoying, it is relatively harmless, usually resolving itself in a matter of days. Deep phlebitis , which affects interior veins of the legs, is less common and more dangerous: Because interior veins are larger, blood clots tend to be bigger and are more likely to break free and travel to the lungs. Also, people with deep phlebitis often are not aware that they have it and don't seek proper care. Symptoms
For superficial phlebitis:
  • A red, cord-like vein visible in your leg; the vein will feel hard, warm and tender, and surrounding tissue may become itchy and swollen.

phlebitis AND THROMBOSIS. Basically it means a clot in the vein. Superficial veinthrombosis or SVT is also called superficial thrombophlebitis/phlebitis.
http://veincenter.com/phlebitis.html
PHLEBITIS AND THROMBOSIS
Basically it means a clot in the vein. As the venous system is divided in deep veins and superficial veins one can have clot in each of the systems. Only very rarely clotting can occur in both of the systems in the same time. Superficial vein thrombosis or SVT is also called superficial thrombophlebitis/phlebitis. The "itis" denotes that the vein is engulfed in an inflamatory process: the skin around the vein is read and painful. Swelling can be present as well. Unfortunately, many physicians treat this condition with antibiotics. This is completely unnecessary as in most of cases there is no bacterial infection. The main cause for the condition are varicose veins. Blood stagnates in those venous pools and will clot easily especially during inactivity. Injecting varicose veins can lead to superficial phlebitis as well. In the absence of varicose veins one should look for other reasons such as malignancy elsewhere in the body, gout, Buerger's disease. or an inherited tendency to clot. ( See FAQ The treatment of the condition is simple: evacuation of clot if the patient comes early to the physician, local compression with ace bandages or surgical stockings, and ambulation. The only medication to be given is ibuprofen (Motrin/Advil) 5-7 days that will ease the pain and calm the inflamatory reaction. Occasionally SVT can be associated with DVT. Only in these cases is anticoagulation treatment necessary. If the underling condition for the superficial phlebitis was varicose veins after the inflamatory process has cooled off, surgery for the varicose veins is indicated.

19. PERIPHERAL VENOUS DISORDERS
phlebitis DEFINITION phlebitis is a general term used to describe inflammationof a vein. CAUSE phlebitis is usually caused by an infection or injury.
http://cpmcnet.columbia.edu/texts/guide/hmg16_0007.html
Heart and Blood Vessel Diseases
PERIPHERAL VENOUS DISORDERS The venous system, which returns the oxygen-depleted blood to the heart via a network of increasingly larger blood vessels, often must work against gravity, especially in returning blood from the lower part of the body. Coordinated muscular contractions and, in medium-size veins, a system of one-way valves help keep the blood flowing in the right direction. But these vessels are not aided by the pumping action of the heart or the elastic tension that enables the arteries to function. Thus, many of the disorders arising in the venous system are related to a breakdown in their ability to maintain blood flow. VARICOSE VEINS
DEFINITION

Varicose veins are a very common, usually benign, condition that affects one or more of the large veins in the legs. The veins become distended, either because of an inherent weakness in the walls or a malfunction of some of the one-way valves, permitting a backflow and pooling of blood (see figure 16.16

http://www.internetpharmacyservices.com/healthcontentpharm/ailmentsanddiseases/p
Phlebitis T his is any condition where there is inflammation of a vein. It can refer to superficial veins in the legs or deep veins in the muscles of the leg or pelvis. What to look for For superficial phlebitis:
  • a hard, red vein visible in your leg; it may be warm and tender. fever is possible and sleepless nights as the pain worsens. a throbbing or burning sensation beneath the skin's surface.
For deep phlebitis:
  • potentially no symptoms. pain deep inside the leg and swelling in the ankle
Often this condition is followed by thrombosis (clotting of the blood) . Therefore phlebitis followed by thrombosis is called thrombophlebitis. These painful clots may partially or fully block blood flow in affected veins. The superficial phlebitis is the most common form of phlebitis and occurs in veins near the skin's surface usually in the legs. This is usually harmless although painful and uncomfortable. Deep phlebitis, on the other hand, is less common and more dangerous as it affects the internal veins of the legs. These clots tend to be larger and more able to loosen and travel to other areas. It is also possible for you not to realise you have this problem and it may go untreated. Health Centres Main Index Ailments A-Z Baby / Pregnancy Beauty / Skincare ... Weight Loss Causes The most common cause of phlebitis is varicose veins. Injury can cause phlebitis if a vein is bumped or hurt. Anyone immobilised, such as after surgery, is also vulnerable because blood is not flowing as strongly and clots form more easily. The condition can afflict the elderly, because circulatory problems that can trigger phlebitis tend to worsen with age.
