PATHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS: Inflammation of the lining of a vein usually due to formation of a thrombus producing pain and tenderness along the course of the vein with edema of surrounding tissues, discoloration of overlying skin, and often various systemic symptoms.
PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS: Venous thrombosis usually begins with clot formation in a muscle vein of the calf or foot due to some defect in the clotting mechanism. Blood clots often form following trauma or surgery and, if a vein is blocked, back pressure causes the vein to swell, impedes circulation and the dead cells which rapidly form on the vein wall are replaced with fibrous, inelastic scar tissue.

Phlebitis
The medical term for this condition is thrombophlebitis. In it, small blood clots form in a vein of the legs and the vein becomes inflamed. This is usually caused by infection or injury. Phlebitis is more common in women than men, and in older persons..
Signs and Symptoms
Symptoms of phlebitis depend on its type:
Superficial phlebitis affects the veins visible just beneath the skin surface. People who have varicose veins are susceptible, and the affected area will be red and swollen and feel warm, hard and
tender to the touch. Usually amenable to home treatment, this type seldom results in clots that break loose and flow into the bloodstream.
Deep vein thrombophlebitis, on the other hand, can result in a blood clot that breaks away from the wall of a vein forming an embolism. The clot can interfere with the circulation to the limb or ca
use death if it reaches the lung. This type of phlebitis may occur after prolonged bed rest, major surgery, a heart attack or a stroke. The only symptom may be an aching pain in the limb, but half of persons with deep vein thrombophlebitis have no symptoms. Others may have severe leg pain with swelling of the lower leg. Other conditions that can lead to phlebitis of either kind include:
General inactivity (from a sedentary job, after a prolonged trip by car or plane, or following surgery)

Bridgewalk on the Phlebitis Factory
by Iain X.Banks
Reviewed in brief by Dave Langford
Or, to put it another way, a hasty bit of silliness about Iain Banks written for the 1987 Novacon programme book when he was Guest of Honour. (Relentless auctioneer Rog Peyton and the Royal Angus Hotel venue were invariable parts of the Novacon ambience). Iain X. Banks is widely rumoured to be the latest pseudonym of a stunning new (well, a bit fame-soiled now) author who has taken the British literary establishment by storm. I have my own guess as to who lurks behind this impenetrable new alias. I think it's Martin Amis. This ambitious book transcends genre boundaries and fruitfully fuses the artsy-fartsy mainstream novel with creative borrowings from space opera, gothic horror, Westerns, fighting fantasy gamebooks, model railway magazines and compact discs. In its multiple plot threads we encounter scores of tortured souls, driven and compelled by a burning, insatiable need for increased royalties. The trans-sane Sknab, for example, whose hilarious idiosyncrasies involve introducing literary critics into complex mazes where random turnings lead them to nightmare fates: slow horrendous submersion in the foul wastes of pulped Badger books, or being auctioned off by Rog Peyton, a piece at a time.

Related Articles in Medline Articles in Medline by Author: Falchuk, K. H. McNeil, B. J. Medline Citation Abstract We carried out a double-blind prospective study of the effect of a filter on the incidence of phlebitis associated with intravenous infusion in 541 patients. A total of 277 patients received infusions through intravenous sets with 0.22-micron IVEX-HP filters, and 264 received infusions without filters. Each infusion was evaluated daily for a maximum of three days. The incidence of phlebitis on Days 1, 2, and 3 of the study was 14.3, 31.1, and 27 per cent for patients receiving infusions without filters and 6.8, 9.7, and 11.3 per cent for those receiving infusions through the filters (P less than 0.001). Thus, the incidence was reduced by approximately two thirds in the patients who received infusions through the IVEX-HP filters. We conclude that infusion-related phlebitis is a pervasive problem in hospitalized patients, and that it is usually caused by microparticulate components that are present in the infusion fluids and can be removed by in-line filtration.

phlebitis inflammation of a vein. Phlebitis is almost always accompanied by a blood clot, or thrombus, in the affected vein, a condition known as thrombophlebitis (see thrombosis ). Blood clot formation may follow injury or be associated with infections. Thrombophlebitis of deep veins, usually in the legs or pelvis, may occur in patients recovering from childbirth, surgery, or other conditions requiring prolonged bedrest; the clotting mechanism is thought to be impaired when the legs are immobilized. Pregnancy or the use of oral contraceptives predisposes some women to thrombophlebitis. The major danger is that a clot originating in the leg vein may dislodge and travel to the lung, a condition known as pulmonary embolism (see embolus ). To avoid the risk of embolism, thrombophlebitis is usually treated with anticoagulants

    Phlebitis
