The event will take place at SCL, located at 6120 S. Vermont Avenue (between Slauson and Gage) in Los Angeles. The suggested donation is $5 but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Children enter free. Actress Beah Richards and newspaper publisher Charlotta Bass were two giants among African-American women activists in Los Angeles. The first segment of the program will celebrate the friendship and activism of these women, as performance artist/poet S. Pearl Sharp presents a dramatic reading of excerpts from “There’s a Brown Girl in the Ring,” personal essays by Beah Richards with S. Pearl Sharp. Following that, Occidental College professor and Bass biographer Regina Freer will offer insights on Charlotta Bass as a community activist at the intersection of race, gender, and politics, incorporating images from the

James Hardie Library of Australian Fine Arts
Special Visual Arts Collections As well as the general collection of visual arts materials, the Library houses two special Visual Arts collections, devoted to particular themes in the visual arts including: The James Hardie Library of Australian Fine Arts was donated by James Hardie Industries Limited to the State Library as a Bicentennial gift to the nation in 1988. Valued at $3 million at the time, it was one of the most significant gifts ever made to an Australian library. The material was originally from the private collection of Mr Patrick Corrigan, an association which has continued, with Mr Corrigan donating material valued at more than $2.3 million to the Hardie and Lindsay Collections since 1988. Together with donations from many other sources, and resources dedicated by the State Library, the collection has doubled in size and value, making it the finest collection of its type in the world.
The Collection
The core of the James Hardie Library is its collection of over 12,000 titles including a breathtaking array of first editions and foundation firsts in Australian art publishing, such as the first Australian art book on an Australian artist with colour plates, the first Australian art magazine, and the first book on an Australian photographer. It also holds limited and deluxe editions of illustrated art books, and archival and manuscript material relating to the visual arts.

Satellite Collections
General Information
List of satellite collections

What distinguishes a satellite collection from other non-legacy material in the Archive?
Several factors in combination or, in some cases, individually determine when material is acquired as part of the satellite collections.
Provenence: The importance of an item or a group of items may stem, in part, from the agency which collected and/or provided the material. That is, the value of the group of material is greater than the sum of the individual parts. Another important aspect of provenence is that of verification. It often helps to establish the authenticity of an item if the history of ownership of the physical item is known.
Rarity: The fact that an item may be unique or exist in very few copies contributes to its importance and value thus making it valuable to deal with the item on its own terms rather than attempting to mainstream it into other more common materials.
Strangeness: The uncommon nature of an item often means it is more easily dealt with on its own terms rather than trying to integrate it amongst dissimilar materials.
