Sharks and Fishes
Physical Education - Grades (elementary school and middle school)
Teachers: To reinforce the feeding habits of sharks, this activity will help students to understand the role of the school of fish as the prey and the shark as the predator. In addition, it will provide a break in the classroom routine to go outside and move around. Objective: Students should be able to demonstrate quick physical movement by successfully staying away from the "sharks". Techniques such as faking, safety in large numbers, and other trick movements should be learned and demonstrated. Materials:
  • two designated areas serving as safety zones cones (4) to mark off safety zone
Field: Teacher Background: Students should have studied the food chain and feeding habits of fish/prey and shark/predator. The teacher can review how fish stay in groups, following each other away from danger. The field is set up with two safety zones separated by the shark pit. All but two students will start in one safety zone. Either the teacher can pick two students or ask for two volunteers. The teacher may decide to choose these two students before fully explaining to the students what they will be doing. The students in the safety zone become the fish and the two students become the sharks. The sharks stay in the middle of the field in the shark pit. The object of the game is for the fish to get to the other safety zone without a shark catching them. If the shark catches a fish, that fish becomes a shark. The game begins when the teacher says "Good luck fishes-Ready-Go!"

"Project ACES (All Children Exercising Simultaneously) aims to educate children about the importance of lifelong fitness and to end the stereotype that children are fat, weak, and lazy," says Len Saunders, a Montville, New Jersey, phys ed teacher who created the program in 1989. "Project ACES aims to make fitness fun!" "There is no specific routine to follow," adds Saunders. "The children might walk, jog, bike, dance, do aerobics, or a combination of all of them for 15 minutes. Many schools invite local celebrities to the event. Most schools get the entire school population out on the playground, put on music, and get everyone in the school have some fun by moving and exercising together." LESSON PLANS
Lesson Plans: Strong, concise statements of objectives are always an essential component of any lesson plan. Once the objectives have been determined, the lesson and unit plan design follows. New teachers should develop thorough lesson plans, in part to ensure that important details and concerns have not been over looked, but also because it provides a disciplined and structured way to think about the art of teaching.
...In general, a good lesson plan will contain variations of the following items: *Title and brief introduction of the concepts to be addressed. *Goal(s) or the relationship of the lesson to the purposes of the curricular goals. *Rationale… why are the students learning this. *Instructional Objectives, and *Resources… all relevant vocabulary and definitions, books, audio visual aids, articles.

Exploring Canada's Favourite Sport
Using Sport of the Month Please feel free to print any or all of this Guide for your own use, or for distribution to other interested teachers! Curriculum Areas:
Physical Education, Canadiana, Canadian Heroes, Math Grade Level: 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 (suggested) Learning Outcomes:
During the hockey season, you may want to give your students an opportunity to learn more about Canada's favourite sport. You could use this lesson to apply to curriculum outcomes where students can:
  • Develop an understanding of a component of Canadian History
  • Learn about Canadian Heroes
  • Enhance their appreciation of hockey as a part of their physical education
  • Reinforce math skills (e.g. rink size)

Although elementary students aren't often involved in physical education activities in the classroom, you may find this suggested lesson useful if you have some young hockey players - or hockey enthusiasts - in your class. If you also teach these students math, you could use one of the activities as a cross-curricular math lesson. Suggested Lesson Strategy You might want to try this suggested lesson strategy near or during the Stanley Cup playoffs. This lesson takes the form of a research project, wherein students use CBC4Kids to find the answers to the following questions:

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT FOR DEAF AND HARD-OF-HEARING STUDENTS
GRADES: 1-4
Just a few tricks I use to keep kids organized and to integrate language and literacy development throughout the day.
  • Have students write down their lunch order (if they have a choice) on laminated posters, using wipe-off markers/crayons. I use one poster with pictures and words to show all lunch choices and mark them with marker as to the feature of the day. The students write their name and lunch choice so that I can record them on our lunch order sheet.
  • Kids keep track of weekly center work using their own manila folders with center checklists inside. On this list appear all the possible centers available that week, space for them to write their name and the date each center assignment was completed, stars to color in to rate the center (1-3, 1 being "yuck" and 3 being "my favorite!"). I then leave a space where I can make comments about student progress, attitude towards work and areas of need. These are sent home weekly to parents, so they are kept abreast of their child's progress.
  • I use a wipe-off board to list daily schedules, including time, short phrases describing what's happening and pictures for my emergent readers. For my ADHD/behavior challenged kids, I refer to the schedule often and have them cross out what we've completed this helps them get through the day with less outbursts and to be able to complete work, knowing that recess will happen shortly!
