Computational Accelerator Physics: Advanced Modeling for Next-Generation Accelerator Applications
Robert D. Ryne, Los Alamos National Laboratory Research Objectives The next generation of particle accelerators will require a major advance in numerical modeling capability, due to extremely stringent beam control and beam loss requirements and the presence of highly complex three-dimensional accelerator components. The primary goal of this Grand Challenge is to develop an advanced, parallel modeling capability, based on High Performance Computing and Communications resources and state-of-the-art numerical methods and algorithms, that will enable the design, optimization, and numerical validation of future accelerators. Computational Approach Accomplishments This past year we developed a parallel version of the code LINAC, which is being used to support the Accelerator Production of Tritium (APT) project. This is now the primary code for performing large-scale beam halo simulations for the project. A primary accomplishment was a 5-fold increase in the performance of the space charge algorithm over our initial implementation. In addition to LINAC, we developed a new code called IMPACT, which is based on split-operator techniques. IMPACT (Integrated-Map and Particle Accelerator Tracking code) has an especially accurate and efficient treatment of radio frequency accelerating gaps, obtained by numerical integration of the gap transfer map rather than integration of single particle trajectories. The code is especially useful for modeling superconducting proton linear accelerators, where there are only a few types of accelerating cavities.

    This textbook builds on the fluid and kinetic theory of equilibria and waves presented in a companion textbook, Basic Space Plasma Physics (by the same authors), but can also serve as a stand-alone text. It extends the fields covered there into the domain of plasma instability and nonlinear theory. The book provides a representative selection of the many possible macro- and microinstabilities in a space plasma, from the Rayleigh-Taylor and Kelvin-Helmholtz to electrostatic and electromagnetic kinetic instabilities. Their quasilinear stabilization and nonlinear evolution and their application to space physics problems are treated. The chapters on nonlinear theory include nonlinear waves, weak turbulence and strong turbulence, all presented from the viewpoint of their relevance to space plasma physics. Special topics include auroral partivle acceleration, soliton formation and caviton collapse, anomalous transport, and the theory of collisionless shocks.     Current is the rate of flow of electrical charge.
    One of the undefined qualities of physics, it measures the separation of two points.
    Dependent Variable
    When two variables are related, we say that one depends on the other. This variable is called the dependent variable . The"other" variable is free to roam so it is called the independent variable. In a scientific experiment, the experimenter chooses values for the independent variable, runs the experiment, and measures the dependent variable. Ordered pairs of choosen and measured values (independent and dependent) are often plotted on a two dimensional graph for visualization. The dependent variable is traditionally plotted on the vertical axis.
    The energy of an object increases when work is done on it. An increase in energy may heat up the object, speed it up, lift it up, or all of the above.
    The strength of a force is defined by the rate at which it can speed up one kilogram of mass.

The index of all subsections gives direct access to selected topics. Although not a physicist, I have used over the years this book whenever I needed information. While it is not up to date, its presentation of the background material at the time of the research leading to the atom bomb and electronics is excellent. Some of the terminology may not be standard. I will be grateful for any comments. You can step forwards or backwards at the end of subdivisions; the first one is General Theory of Motion and Force (Mechanics) the last one Electron envelopes of nuclear atom, their properties and structure (Bohr 1913) I also would like to know whether anyone would be interested in obtaining a CD, on which the over 1000 images are not thumbnails; they were introduced for faster service on the WWW.
