    Links The Joint Committee on Complexity Advanced Neural Computing Research Center Alife Online Overview of Physics/Advanced Computing Activities I am currently collaborating on research involving: Complexity The Joint Committee on Complexity is an inter-institutional project involving ISU, St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Rose-Hulman and Ivy Tech. The Committee is sponsoring several activities related to the study and teaching of complexity . Complexity is a new field of science, and, as such, it is difficult to pin down an exact description of it. In general, however, we might call complexity that process by which a system produces behavior that is not predictable from studying the system components. As an example, the stock market consists of a group of traders who operate by a set of rules designed to increase their profits. The behavior of the stock market includes increases and decreases in stock prices, volume of trade, etc. that are not always predictable from a study of the individual traders. Other examples of complexity might include- biological systems that produce emerging properties such as life, behavior of groups, etc.; traffic flow along roads; large, extended computer systems; and even human behavior, the effects and interpretation of works of art and the teaching/learning process.     Useful Applications of Physics Knowledge
    Most adults HATE the concept of Physics. If they could, they avoided it in High School and College. If the HAD to take it, Physics seems to represent a traumatic experience in their lives. This is the case primarily because no one (and no textbook) showed them the incredible usefulness a moderate knowledge of Physics can be. This series of lessons is meant to correct that situation. Students in High School or College Physics should be able to benefit from and EVEN ENJOY (!!) these Physics lessons. The lessons should help clarify the usages of a lot of those dry subjects and equations the teacher or professor tries to ram down your throat. These lessons are freely made available to teachers and professors for use as they desire, either on the InterNet or in the classroom.     Semiconductor Physics Group
    The Semiconductor Physics group investigates fundamental electronic phenomena using advanced, often unique, semiconductor structures. High-quality GaAs-AlGaAs wafers can be grown in our Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) machines, and the surface, or buried layers, patterned using optical, electron beam, or ion beam lithography. The structures made may consist, for example, of gates above a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). When a negative voltage is applied to the gates, the 2DEG is depleted, leaving electrons only in regions not covered by the gates. Thus electrons may be confined to narrow channels or boxes of whatever shape is required. This allows us to investigate one or zero-dimensional effects. The devices can be made small enough that electrons suffer no collisions there, provided low enough temperatures (4K or even 100mK) are used. The SP Group is actively developing new processing and patterning techniques, and looking at the fascinating physics that these techniques make accessible. Information is available on:
