HIgh Energy and Nuclear Physics The focus of the nuclear physics research program has been to: understand the structure of protons and neutrons, as well as mesons, in terms of the underlying quark and gluon structure; understand nuclear structure and reactions, especially nuclei at the limits of mass (superheavy elements), excitation energy, angular momentum, and neutron-to-proton ratio; study the properties and phases of nuclear matter; study fundamental symmetries of nature as they are apparent in nuclei and nuclear reactions; and study the nuclear dynamics of the sun, supernova, other astrophysical objects, and nucleosynthesis, which includes understanding the properties of neutrinos. Another major direction for high energy physics in recent years has been into space, since particle physics is essential to an understanding of our universe and its evolution. As one example, high energy physics techniques were used in the 1990s to discover that the expansion of the universe since the Big Bang is actually speeding up rather than slowing down. Plans are being made to pursue this very important discovery with an orbiting telescope.

Center for Space Physics About the CSP The Center for Space Physics was formed during the 1987/88 academic year by four faculty members from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and the Department of Astronomy . The current director of the Center, Professor Supriya Chakrabarti , began his new position in the fall of 1997. For the 1998/1999 academic year, we can again report a year of significant accomplishments. Our members continue to discover exciting phenomena, develop new instrumentation and techniques, lead and participate in various national and international committees, and involve graduate and undergraduate students in all aspect of space research. On October 5, 1998, Professor Michael Mendillo delivered the 1998/1999 University Lecture entitled, " Astronomy Through A Glass Darkly." Boston University's energetic particle detectors aboard the POLAR spacecraft continue to provide exciting data that could potentially lead to a new perspective on magnestopheric physics. Boston University's imaging team continues pile up new discoveries, including the discovery of a third tail on comet Hale Bopp. Furthermore, they have found that an extended lunar sodium tail liberated during a meteor shower extends well past the Earth. Professor

Setterfield [Ed Note: We have been following Barry Setterfield's research on the speed of light since 1993. It is interesting that both evolutionists and creation scientists can be blinded by their own presuppositions...] When we walk into a dark room, flip a switch and the light is instantly on, it seems that light has no speed but is somehow infinite - instantly there - and that was the majority opinion of scientists and philosophers until September 1676, when Danish astronomer Olaf Roemer announced to the Paris Academie des Sciences that the anomalous behavior of the eclipse times of Jupiter's inner moon, Io, could be accounted for by a finite speed of light.   His work and his report split the scientific community in half, involving strong opinions and discussions for the next fifty years. It was Bradley's independent confirmation of the finite speed of light, published January 1, 1729, which finally ended the opposition.

    Augsburg Physics History
In 1957, Dr. Theodore Hanwick left his post as chairman of the Physics Department at Rutgers University to start a physics program at Augsburg. Since then, over 120 physics majors have graduated from Augsburg. Some graduates pursue careers in industry or accept high school teaching positions, but the majority go on to earn advanced degrees in physics or related fields. Because of the excellent academic and practical preparation they receive at Augsburg, almost all of these students receive assistantships and fellowship support for graduate studies. A History of Physics at Carson-Newman College (Temporary Edition, By John Burton (Class of 1959, and Professor of Physics, 1964 to mailto: j burton@cn.edu 1. The Early Formative Years. 1851-1882. ... Appendix 1. The Early Formative Years. 1851-1882. From its beginnings, Carson-Newman College has had some form of physics in its curriculum. The 1856-57 catalog of Mossy Creek Baptist College includes in the curriculum the subjects of Surveying, Natural Philosophy (which is what Sir Isaac Newton called his field of study) and Astronomy. Courses in Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Practical Mathematics provided a sound mathematical basis for these sciences. Since all students were required to take this same curriculum, these courses represent a firm commitment to the value of training in physical science. The college catalog proclaims, " Our philosophical and chemical apparatus . . . are ample for experimentation. " Thus, Mossy Creek College provided a firm foundation in the physical sciences. R. R. Bryan was Professor of Natural Philosophy, also Vice President and President of the institution. From this position he surely exerted a profound influence on the college s strong emphasis in the physical sciences.
