Magazine plays its part in physics history Gordon Fraser , who has stepped down as editor of CERN Courier looks at how the physics scene has changed during his time working on the magazine.
New editor
A news magazine is about developments. As scientific developments have unfolded over time, the many issues of this magazine have helped to reveal the history of particle physics.
The rate of particle physics discoveries, which was tumultuous during most of the 20th century, has slowed down. In the final years of the 20th century our knowledge and understanding reached a plateau in the Standard Model (few physicists share Murray Gell-Mann's passion for coining imaginative words where they matter).
From this plateau, the view has widened. High energy means high temperature, so that particle physics and astrophysics, and even cosmology, find themselves more and more on common ground, tracking the immediate aftermath of the Big Bang in a still-hot universe. Not that long ago it would have been inconceivable for particle physicists to be interested in what happens in the sky. Now the latest news on microwave background radiation, supernovae, black holes and gamma-ray bursters is followed enthusiastically at major particle physics meetings. Astrowatch is one of the most popular features of this magazine.

My main interest is in the concept of
"force" as held by the Greeks and during the Middle Ages.
,especially the implications of Aristotle's understanding

Ancient Greeks Pre-Galileo Classical Modern
Ancient Greeks
bc Democritus proposes that all mater is made of small indivisible particles that he calls “atoms.” bc Aristarchus of Samos determines the relative distances of the sun and the moon from the earth. He also determines the relative sizes of the sun, the moon and the earth. These considerations lead him to propose that the earth revolves around the sun. bc Archimedes discovers his principle of buoyancy (Archimedes’ Principle). bc Eratosthenes develops a method to measure the circumference of the earth. bc Hipparchus estimates the size of moon from the parallax of an eclipse. Ptolemy develops his a theory of the motion of the heavenly bodies. According to his theory, the earth is at the center of the universe and the sun and known planets revolve around it.
Pre-Galilean Physics
Petrus de Maricourt conducts experiments with magnets and magnetic compasses.

These timelines are under continual development by design. Studying the history of science is a life-long process, and making such maps help by providing a skeletal reference for these studies. I hope these can be of use to you, but a history timeline is no substitute for really digging in to the matters. Bibliographies are listed on each page. Please email me any suggestions you may have. Chronologies Developed Here: Statistical Mechanics and
      Thermodynamics
Dates of major theoretical and experimental advances, inventions etc, related to theories of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. Includes notes on phlogiston, caloric and kinetic theories of heat and motion. Hypercomplex Numbers A history of hypercomplex numbers, though mainly concerned with complex numbers. Electromagnetic Theory Theoretical development of light, electricity, magnetism, electromagnetism. Includes the key players and links to some biographies.
