Updated on 04-02-2003 Finally, I'm updating this page with some new images! If you really miss the old Pinhole Photography page , it's still around. This time around, I'm organizing the photos by camera:
8"x10" Box Camera
This is the first pinhole camera I ever made. I made it during a pinhole photography class that I took at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education some years ago. Alan Greene taught the class (check out his book, Primitive Photography ) and it was great fun. The camera is made from black foam core and gaffer's tape. Composing lines were drawn on with a yellow gel pen to help when trying to frame the image. The shutter is a piece of black masking tape and the pinhole was made in a piece of .002" thick brass. The f-stop is f133.
Tea Can Camera
I made a camera out of a small can that used to hold teabags. It's focal length is 80mm and it's f-stop is f242. The picture of me was taken in Harvard Square - I ripped off the electrical tape shutter, then realized that the cement that I was laying on was about 100 degrees and I had to suffer through the rest of the exposure! The apples on the snowy roof were at Attitash Mountain Village in New Hampshire.
Oatmeal Can Camera
I made a camera from an oatmeal container using these instructions . Mine is a little different in that I put two pinholes in it. You only use one or the other, but they're at different heights to allow you to drop in either a 5"x7" piece of photo paper or an 8"x10" one. I don't think I've ever used anything other than 8"x10" though, so whatever. Anyway, here's

    What Is Pinhole Photography?
    by Richard Vallon Jr.
Pinhole photography is making photographs using a camera fitted with a tiny hole kno wn as a pinhole in the place of a lens. Any light tight container that can hold a sensitive piece of film or photographic printing paper can be fitted with a pinhole to make photographs. ( For detailed instructions on making and using pinhole cameras see the books on pinhole photography section of my web page (a pointer is available below); for pre-made pinholes and pinhole cameras see the pinhole products section of my page.)
    Early History
    The Pinhole and Photography
Practical photography, first invented by L.J.M. Daguerre of Paris in 1839 used " ;film" formed by chemical reactions on a silver plate which was not sensitive enough to record the faint images projected onto it through a pinhole. Early in the history of photography a race began to produce lenses which transmit large amounts of li ght and create sharp images. The progress of lens manufacturing marks the technical history of photography's early achievements and continues to the present. Between the 1870s and 1890s more "modern" black and white films came into production an d by 1890 these far more sensitive films were used by George Davison of England to produce his award winning photograph

There is a certain magical dynamic to images created with a homemade pinhole camera. This is photography in one of its simplest forms. Equipment is minimal and results are direct, yet the range of potential visual effects is unlimited. Both beginning and advanced photographers learn a variety of ways to make pinhole images, including photographs made directly on 35mm rolls of film, film cartridges, and sheets of light-sensitive paper placed in boxes or cans. Students explore the distinctive pinhole aesthetic, with its ultra-wide angles, infinite depth of field, long exposures, reciprocity, blur, great distortions, and multiple exposures. They also study techniques for enlarging pinhole negatives, contact-printing from paper, hand-coloring, and the presentation of finished photographs. A list of supplies to purchase is mailed prior to the first class. Photo chemistry is provided.

Pinhole cameras offer us a different way of seeing the world, allowing for distortion of subject matter, grainy finishes, and the opportunity to create illusions by making objects look bigger than they actually are. Each day campers take photos and process film themselves as they create a series of photographs with their own crafted pinhole cameras. They experiment with techniques such as perspective, ghost images, and multiple exposures as they explore a theme of their choice. Campers visit photography exhibits on the National Mall to see and discuss the work of other photographers. On the final day of camp, family and friends are invited to view the campers' work.

my photography honors traditional photographic methods while igniting them afresh through a new alliance of advanced digital imagery and computer technology. i use these progressive tools in synchronicity which yields great freedom in communication and creative expression. while i intend to continue to use digital technologies at
    aeternus.com,
i want to distance myself from the wizzardry and techniques of the photography and instead center only on the "purpose" and "intention" of the imagery. (this new theme of simplicity should be evident in the gallery's new design as well as in the pinhole photography whose basic and simple construction allows for the true essence of photographic imagery.)
as i try to let the grace of the spirit take over the work, i endeavor to use visual details which may gently communicate to the viewer's eyes a faint yet desperately clear light which is our own being. as subtle as a whisper to their ear, i endeavor to acquaint the viewer with a stillness and centeredness of spirit which are alive in the intentions of our Creator's life-giving breath.

I've been doing pinhole photography since the summer of zip which is to say, 2000. I'll be making my photo collection available here for your perusal as I find the time. For now, please enjoy the pictures I took at Origins 2000 Origins 2001 , and Origins 2002 In addition to viewing my photos, you may be interested in reading a description of my camera , including construction and handling tips, should you wish to make your own. A note on my philosophy of pinhole photography: There is little point in using a pinhole camera to take the sort of pictures you can take with an ordinary lensed camera. You'll never get the same image quality. A pinhole image should therefore utilize one or more of the unique features of pinhole imaging. The two most obvious of these are an essentially infinite depth of field and long exposure times. Having an infinite depth of field means that, while the image may be blurrier than can be achieved with a lens, everything in the picture is in equal "focus", no matter how near or far (except in the limit of extreme closeness); so it is possible to contrast objects of vastly different scales and distances in the same shot. Long exposure times means it is possible to capture action in a uniquely blurry and ghostly way.

    Pinhole Photography
Pinhole Photography - History, Images, Cameras, Formulas
    Introduction
Pinhole photography is lensless photography. A tiny hole replaces the lens. Light passes through the hole; an image is formed in the camera.
Pinhole cameras are small or large, improvised or designed with great care. Cameras have been made of sea shells, many have been made of oatmeal boxes, coke cans or cookie boxes, at least one has been made of a discarded refrigerator. Cameras have been cast in plaster like a face mask, constructed from beautiful hardwoods, built of metal with bellows and a range of multiple pinholes. Station wagons have been used as pinhole cameras - and rooms in large buildings.
Basically a pinhole camera is a box, with a tiny hole in one end and film or photographic paper in the other.
Pinhole cameras are used for fun, for art and for science.
Designing and building the cameras are great fun. Making images with cameras you have made yourself is a great pleasure, too. But in serious photography the pinhole camera is just an imaging device with its advantages and limitations, special characteristics and potentials. By making the best of the camera's potential great images can be produced. Some of the images could not have been produced with a lens.
    Characteristics
Pinhole images are softer - less sharp - than pictures made with a lens. The images have nearly infinite depth of field. Wide angle images remain absolutely rectilinear. On the other hand, pinhole images suffer from greater chromatic aberration than pictures made with a simple lens, and they tolerate little enlargement.

We focused on the chemistry of the black and white photographic process as the science component of this activity. The reactions involved are good examples o photochemistry and multiphase chemical reactions, since the light sensitive materials (silver halides) are in the form of a gelatin emulsion of microscopic crystals. http://www.stevefoote.net/pinholes/about_the_photos.htm
About the Photographs From the first day I made a pinhole photograph (using a cardboard box and 4x5" sheet film) I became fascinated with the possibilities of pinhole photography. As a nature photographer, I was intrigued by the idea of using a natural "lens" to photograph natural subjects. And as I began experimenting with different kinds of pinhole cameras, an amazing thing began to happen... the unique optical properties of the pinhole actually began to change the way I was perceiving the world. For me, it was as though the pinhole opened a portal to new dimensions of time and space. With a pinhole camera, I could capture the subtle motions of leaves floating on a pond or ferns blowing in the wind; I could explore the "miniature worlds" that exist at ground level and investigate unusual vantage points and shifts in visual perspective; I could conjure up "ghosts and spirits" and make unique photographic images that probably couldn't be created any other way. But as any pinhole photographer can attest, what sounds so "simple" can really be quite complex, especially if one hopes to obtain the best possible results. Learning how to consistently get high-quality, relatively-sharp pinhole images required many months of experimentation. I built numerous homemade cameras and made countless experiments before I was finally able to achieve the results I wanted and a degree of control comparable to using a regular camera.
