Privateers and Pirates
written by
Angus Konstam illustrated by
Angus McBride
Privateering, a type of nationally sponsored piracy, was used in maritime warfare since the middle ages, and in the early 18th century many sea captains turned to privateering as a way of making money. It reached its peak during the American Revolution, when the fledgling American navy had to rely on privateers to disrupt British shipping between England and the rebellious colonies. Following peace with the American colonies in 1815, many former privateers turned to piracy, creating the last great wave of pirates lasting a decade. This book describes the world of privateers and pirates in detail, exploring their ships, crews, ports and battle tactics. The many illustrations include old maps and engravings, ship schematics, paintings of battles and raids, portraits of famous pirates, weapons, and more. Ten full-page color plates by McBride illustrate authentic costumes and battle scenes. This book is very informative. Angus Konstam has written a number of books on eighteenth century subjects, including

by James Smith Walking the plank, "shiver me timbers" and the crossed bones and skull of the Jolly Roger. The phrases and images they conjure up are known to us all. For some they refer to old movies seen on a Saturday matinee, or stories read late at night under the covers. For a few the name is synonymous with a ride at a famous amusement park. These stories are all based on fact, there really was a time when Pirates roamed the Caribbean. For over three hundred years the Caribbean was a place of war and strife from the establishment of the first European colonies until the nineteenth century and the establishment of new independent republics. The region was rich in treasure to gain and political alliances and intrigues to exploit if a man was daring enough to do so. It was the time of the Pirates Pirates were of all nationalities, French, Portuguese, and Spanish. Even heavily armed Dutch trading vessels occasionally found another way in which to make a quick if bloody profit. The majority of the pirates in the region though were English It was this small seafaring nation that would produce most of the ships that ravaged this peaceful sea and most of its most famous or rather infamous captains.

HOME TIME AND SPACE PREHISTORY MESOPOTAMIA ... Haiti The Pirates The beginning of the colonial era in the Caribbean was also known as the "Golden Age of Piracy." The Caribbean Sea was thousands of miles from European control, making the region a prime target for pirates who patrolled the seas in order to steal. The Europeans monarchs could not afford to send their naval forces to the Caribbean, so they instead issued "letters of marque" that allowed the owners of private ships to attack ships from rival nations. These ship captains were known as privateers, and they were legal pirates turned over a portion of what they seized to the government that sponsored them. One of the most famous privateers was Sir Francis Drake, who sailed for England while England was at war with Spain. Drake not only raided ships, he also attacked Spanish towns and mule trains carrying gold. Drake was not an outlaw, at least in England. Queen Elizabeth I chose him to be the second person after Magellan to lead a sailing expedition around the world. Shortly after Drake completed his journey in 1580, Elizabeth addressed him as "my dear pirate," and over the objections of the Spanish, she knighted him.

Buccaneers And Marooners Of The Spanish Main
JUST above the northwestern shore of the old island of Hispaniolathe Santo Domingo of our dayand separated from it only by a narrow channel of some five or six miles in width, lies a queer little hunch of an island, known, because of a distant resemblance to that animal, as the Tortuga de Mar, or sea turtle. It is not more than twenty miles in length by perhaps seven or eight in breadth; it is only a little spot of land, and as you look at it upon the map a pin's head would almost cover it; yet from that spot, as from a center of inflammation, a burning fire of human wickedness and ruthlessness and lust overran the world, and spread terror and death throughout the Spanish West Indies, from St. Augustine to the island of Trinidad, and from Panama to the coasts of Peru. About the middle of the seventeenth century certain French adventurers set out from the fortified island of St. Christopher in longboats and hoys, directing their course to the westward, there to discover new islands. Sighting Hispaniola "with abundance of joy," they landed, and went into the country, where they found great quantities of wild cattle, horses, and swine. Now vessels on the return voyage to Europe from the West Indies needed revictualing, and food, especially flesh, was at a premium in the islands of the Spanish Main; wherefore a great profit was to be turned in preserving beef and pork, and selling the flesh to homeward-bound vessels.
