English is Uganda's official language, but the people speak many African languages. Uganda has magnificent scenery, including snow-capped mountains, thick tropical forests, and semidesert areas. Lakes cover more than a sixth of Uganda. Part of Lake Victoria, the world's second largest freshwater lake, lies in the country.

Why is East "up" on Sandals' maps?
Our east-oriented maps of the Holy Land are consistent both with the biblical data and with the way people in the land oriented themselves geographically throughout their history. Our four directions of the compass (north, south, east, west) are terms foreign to ancient culture. The Bible refers to the north as saphon, which means "toward the hidden region," to the south as negeb, the region of the Negev, to the west as 'am ("sea"), referring to the Mediterranean Sea, and to the east as qedem, "the region in front." Each of these four terms occurs in Gen 13:14-15 in the record of Yahweh's promise of the land to Abraham and his descendants. The Bible refers to the east as the direction where the sun rises and to the west to where the sun sets (Ps 103:12). The south is also called the "region of the right hand" and the north "the region of the left hand." Jacob named the last of his twelve children Benjamin, "son of the right hand" or "son of the south." Benjamin was born near Ephrath (Bethlehem) in the south in contrast to his other eleven sons who were born in the north (Gen 35:16-18). This east-orientation perspective continued even after the biblical period. For instance, The Medeba Map (about A.D. 565), crafted of over two million colored stone cubes, locates Jerusalem in the foreground and shows the Jordan River in the background flowing from the left (north) into the Dead Sea on the right (south).

PHYSICIAN GROUP DEVELOPS DIABETES MANAGEMENT TOOLS
(Excerpted from a Feb. 11, 2003 Reuters article by Karen Pallarito made available via MedScape at The Disease Management Institute of the National Association of Managed Care Physicians recently announced the development of a "report card" to help patients with diabetes better manage their disease and an "audit tool" for physicians to assess the care they provide their diabetic patients. This is part of a larger effort by the NAMCP to develop a series of tools to help better manage a number of chronic conditions. “The report card allows patients to track key measures of their health over time, including spaces for recording hemoglobin A1 levels (a measure of blood sugar control), the presence of protein in urine samples, LDL or "bad" cholesterol, blood pressure, body mass index and flu shots. Patients also may keep a log of their exercise activity. “The physician audit tool guides doctors through a self-assessment of the care their office provided to diabetic patients. The audit is based on 25 randomly selected patient medical records. For each patient, it assesses several measures, such as whether a hemoglobin A1c test was done, the result of that test, and whether an eye exam was given in the last 24 months.”

Researching Polish roots can be extremely interesting and sometimes very challenging.
Often unable to read or write, many early Polish pioneers came to America and were dependent upon Americans of English, Irish, or Scotch roots to understand and interpret pronunciations of Polish words and names into the English language. As a result, the names of many Polish ancestors were often misunderstood and frequently misspelled.
Modern Polish-Americans often have difficulty in trying to find written records concerning their ancestors because of the misunderstandings and misspellings.
In addition, the first generation Polish immigrants sometimes changed their names as they tried to integrate themselves into main-stream American life, and second and third generation Polish-
Americans changed their names to distance themselves from the "foreigners" and make themselves more American. Typical examples can be found in the 1910 and 1912 South Bend City Directories, where several Polish families changed their names from Marzal to Marshall, yet retained their Polish first names.
As with many other names in various ethnic groups, Polish surnames have meanings, providing keys to geographical locations or deeds of valor.

    Radun~
This entry refers to a town formerly in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, but now in Belarus (some very near the border with Lithuania). Poland proper has several Radun's, so it's important not to confuse them with this place. Radun [ now Radun, ..., in Belarus ], a small government-owned town on the Radunka River, Lida powiat , in the 4th political district, center of a gmina and a rural district; it is an estate belonging to the treasury, 30 km. northwest of Lida, 37 km. from Wasiliszki, and 82 km. from Wilno, on a side road which in the 16th century was the shortest highway between Wilno and Kraków. In the year 1881 there were 1,526 inhabitants (757 male and 769 female); in the year 1866 there were 91 houses and 869 inhabitants (361 Catholics and 508 Jews); it has a wooden Catholic church and chapel, a synagogue, gmina administrative office, and a public school, which in the year 1885-6 was attended by 56 boys and 2 girls. It is the property of the treasury, which gave the lands back to the peasants for purchase. About 2 km. from the town, on a vast plain near the village of Horodyszcze, is a large trench, and even though the inhabitants call it the "Swedish" trench, its shape and the name of the adjoining the village shows that it was a fortified citadel of long ago. According to Balinski ( Star. Polska
