Printout A plant is a member of the kingdom Plantae, a living organism that utilizes photosynthesis, a process in which energy from sunlight is converted to chemical energy (food). Plants are at the base of the food web and are autotrophs (or producers - organisms that make their own food). Plants vary greatly in size, shape, and the type of environment in which they live. Structure and Function : Roots anchor the plant in the ground and absorb water and mineral nutrients from the ground. Leaves contain chloroplasts, in which photosynthesis occurs. Carbon dioxide is absorbed through pores in the leaves; oxygen is produced as a byproduct of photosynthesis and is released. Plant cells have a supportive cellulose cell wall (unlike animal cells which lack cellulose). The following is a diagram of the external anatomy of a typical flowering plant

1.0 TEACHING, RESEARCH AND EXTENSION PROGRAMS 1.1 Mission and emphases of the department Research in the section covers the areas of plant physiology and biochemistry, cell biology, molecular genetics, biomechanics, paleobotany, anatomy and morphology. The Section is unusual in emphasizing vertical integration across disciplinary boundaries and collaboration with faculty from the applied plant sciences, chemistry and engineering. The section plays an important role in evolutionary studies. However, teaching and research in plant ecology is conducted by faculty in the Section of Ecology and Systematics, while plant systematics is primarily the responsibility of faculty in the Bailey Hortorium. 1.2 Faculty research 1.3 Graduate program The section provides the administrative base for the Graduate Field of Plant Biology (formerly Botany). Approximately 30 graduate students are associated with faculty in the section. V ascular plants contain two main types of conduction tissue, the xylem and phloem. These two tissues extend from the leaves to the roots, and are vital conduits for water and nutrient transport. In a sense, they are to plants what veins and arteries are to animals. Program of Study in Molecular and Cell Biology
    Students interested in the program of study in Molecular and Cell Biology should enroll in the more rigorous courses in physical sciences and be well prepared in mathematics. Genetics and biochemistry are of prime importance in molecular and cell biology. In fact, there is no sharp division between biochemistry, genetics, and molecular and cell biology. Molecular and cell biology may be considered as the application of biochemical and genetic approaches to the solution of problems at the cellular level. The Molecular and Cell Biology program of study requires a cell biology survey course, a laboratory course, and at least seven credits chosen from a wide range of courses. Students are also encouraged to gain an appreciation for experimental molecular and cell biology by carrying out independent research projects. Although not required, students anticipating graduate study in molecular or cell biology should consider taking physical chemistry. Molecular and Cell biology is a dynamic field. Students graduating with a program of study in molecular and cell biology at Cornell usually continue their education in graduate, medical, or veterinary schools. The demand for research scientists interested in molecular and cell biology is high, not only in academic institutions but also in industrial and government laboratories as well. Technical positions for bachelor's-level graduates are also prevalent.

Major research interests:
Stomata consist of two guard cells that regulate gas exchange throughout the shoot epidermis. We are studying the molecular genetics and cell biology of how stomata develop in the model plant Arabidopsis . Specific questions include how stomata are spaced apart from each other, the possible role of intercellular signaling in creating this spacing pattern, how the number and orientation of divisions in the pathway are controlled, and how the characteristic shapes of guard cells and pores are established. We have identified several loci that affect these processes including TOO MANY MOUTHS, FOUR LIPS

Graduate Courses in Plant Physiology
We welcome this opportunity to provide you with a brief description of entrance and graduation requirements for the M.S. and Ph.D., plus a listing of courses available to choose from. Entering students are expected to have a basic competence in physical science, mathematics, and plant science. Minimum requirements for admission include courses in calculus, college physics, genetics, plant anatomy, and plant physiology. Minor deficiencies in these areas usually can be made up during graduate study. Minimum requirements for the M.S. include making up any deficiencies in the prerequisites listed above, plus
  • make two seminar presentations and enroll each term in the interdepartmental plant physiology seminar (Bot 696 or its cross-listed equivalent); complete two courses from the following: Agron 516, Bot 512, Bot 513; complete the following courses: BBMB 404 and 405 or 501 and 502; and Stat 401. A higher level course in biochemistry is recommended.
  • All Ph.D. students must complete the following requirements, in addition to these for the M.S. and including making up any deficiencies
