Nature Abhors a Garden
By Peter Del Tredici
Reprinted with permission from Pacific Horticulture . This article appears in the July/August/September 2001 issue. For subscription information click here Homeowners and horticulturists alike use the term "ecological landscaping" to express their awareness of the importance of environmental issues. Unfortunately this awareness does not extend into the realm of semantics. The phrase ecological landscaping , despite its popularity, is ambiguous mainly because the word ecology itself has two very distinct meanings. Within the field of horticulture, ecology generally refers to landscape maintenance techniques that are less destructive, polluting, or energy consumptive than "traditional" techniques—basically what is referred to as being "green." From the biological perspective, the concept of ecology describes the structure, development, and function of ecosystems. The fact that people use the same word in different ways has led to significant communication problems among people who work in different fields of horticulture. In the hope of bridging such communication gaps, this brief article will highlight other important words and concepts that are bandied about in the literature without concern for their precise meaning. While gardeners can learn many things from studying "natural" plant associations, there are clear limits to how far one can carry the comparison. The concept of succession is a case in point. In unmanaged landscapes, the processes that lead to the development of a community of plants and animals on any given piece of land are unpredictable. The apparent stability of that community at any given point in time is an illusion; the reality is ongoing change in composition induced by periodic disturbances.

Nature Walks
A primary objective of the Devonian Botanic Garden is to promote an understanding and appreciation of the local environment. A series of trails set in natural surroundings affords the public intimate contact with the sand dune ecology of the Garden. Initial development began during a period of intense redevelopment in the aftermath of severe flooding in 1974. A trail was cut through the woodlands surrounding the formal gardens to allow for the introduction of native Alberta plants not found on the property. Further development of the trail and the addition of a boardwalk through the Wetland Ecological Reserve was made feasible by funding provided by the Young Canada Works program. This trail became known as the Sandy Dyde Nature Trail, named for the donor of the original 80 acres of land upon which the Garden was constructed. The popularity of the trail and a generous donation by Francis Hall, the daughter of Sandy Dyde, were impetus to expand the nature trail system through the undeveloped southern property of the Garden in 1982. Named for Sandy's wife, a long time supporter of the Botanic Garden, the Bobby Dyde Nature Trail winds its way through a number of unique and interesting plant communities.

A mosaic of vegetation exists across the landscape of the Intermountain region of Idaho (fig. V.3–1). Soils, elevation, and disturbance history strongly influence the mix of plant species growing on a site. Vegetation directly affects watershed functions, suitability of habitat for wildlife, livestock forage, and many recreational uses. Therefore, range managers are very concerned with vegetation management. They try to nurture plant communities that will provide an optimal balance among the multiple demands placed upon America’s public rangelands. The plants growing on a site also provide resources, such as food and shelter, critical to grasshoppers. Because plants define much of a grasshopper’s environment, we may expect that different plant communities will harbor different grasshopper species. Our research on the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management’s Shoshone District in south-central Idaho has documented some dominant trends in the associations between grasshoppers and plant communities in the region.

Linum marginale-Melampsora lini ... Theoretical Studies of Plant-Pathogen Interactions In Australia, studies of the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of host-pathogen systems have centred on empirical studies of metapopulations of Linum marginale subject to attack by the rust pathogen Melampsora lini . Extensive investigations have also been undertaken of two rust pathogen-plant interactions in island archipelagoes off the Swedish coast ( Filipendula ulmaria-Triphragmium ulmariae; Valeriana salina-Uromyces valerianae ). We have recently initiated long-term studies on a fourth plant host-pathogen interaction, the coastal vagrant Cakile maritima and it's pathogen, Alternaria brassicicola . This system provides a useful contrast to the Linum, Filipendula

CPBR Program B Evolutionary Dynamics and Biodiversity of Host-Microbe Systems ... DISEASE RISK ASSESSMENT
Restoration of native vegetation and re-establishment of tree cover is a major conservation focus in Australian farming regions. A consequence of the generally low nutrient levels of Australian soils is that relationships between plants and their microbial symbionts (mycorrhizal fungi as well as N -fixing bacteria) have particular significance for conservation management, the sustainable use of agricultural lands, and the restoration of degraded ecosystems. Indeed, the benefits of establishing effective symbioses may extend beyond the associated plant host to other species in the community. Despite this, little is known about the diversity of native Australian rhizobial bacteria or their host specificity. Over the past several years we have been conducting a series of studies aimed at obtaining such information, and developing a broader understanding of the importance of plant-soil interactions in community structure and dynamics. Current efforts are focused on assessing the extent to which inoculation with native rhizobia can increase the success of revegetation programs.
Variation in Rhizobial Effectiveness Within Host Species
Results from comprehensive glasshouse inoculation trials indicate enormous variability among rhizobial isolates with respect to their ability to form effective symbiotic relationships with legume hosts.

Guidance
What to search for?
  • Searches can be made on any spelling of the Latin or Old English plant-names (read the 'Introduction' for the limitations of the data). If a search results in no hits, the researcher should check the 'Variant Spellings' page of the appropriate language, as it may be that a particular spelling has not yet been recorded on the database.
  • Direct associations. If the researcher, after checking the 'Variant Spellings' list, enters the headword in use in this database, s/he will retrieve all the references so far recorded for any recorded spelling of the headword. The results will consist of direct associations, i.e. a word directly associated with the plant-name of the headword.
  • Extended associations. If the researcher enters a non-headword spelling, e.g. brionia (headword: bryonia ), s/he will still retrieve all the recorded references for any recorded spelling of this plant-name, with their associations, but, in this case, the researcher will also retrieve further references which are associations of associations. In other words, the search will retrieve direct associations and extended associations, the latter being words associated with words associated with a bryonia spelling.
