Principles of classification and evolution of vascular plants; taxonomic tools and collection techniques; use of keys. Field and laboratory studies emphasizing identification of local flowering plants and recognition of major plant families. Meets June 22- July 18, 2003. There are two required texts for this course: (1) Vascular Plant Families (1977, James Payne Smith, Jr., Mad River Press, Inc.), ISBN 0916422070, and (2) Plant Identification Terminology: An Illustrated Glossary (2001, James G. Harris and Melinda W. Harris, Spring Lake Publishing) ISBN 0964022168. Both books are readily available through Internet book dealers (http://amazon.com; http://bn.com). In addition, an OPTIONAL book which students will find very useful is (3) Great Plains Flora Association. Flora of the Great Plains (1991, University of Kansas Press), ISBN 070060295X. This book is currently available through major Internet book sellers. All students MUST obtain a 10X hand-lens. This is available through Kooter's Geology Tools (http://www.kooters.com). An independent research project will be required. Students should plan to bring a sleeping bag/small tent for possible overnight field trips. Field trip fee $20.

History of Plant Taxonomy
Taxonomy is probably the oldest science and certainly almost from the beginning of human existence plants have been classified based on their edibility, and other uses to humans. Note three cultures all based on different member of grass family: European - wheat, Oriental - rice, American - maize (corn). The development of western plant taxonomy has at least five distinct periods:
  • Preliterate Ancient literate Medieval or dark ages Renaissance Theory of Evolution
I. Preliterate - since this is pre written record, we have little direct knowledge of this period. However, through the years, all cultures have learned which of the plants around them are useful, whether for medicines, food, clothing, shelter, weapons, etc. We certainly have much archaeological evidence and even information from ancient paintings, drawings or utensils, and even common sense tells us that humans have always known something about the plants around them and their uses. Obviously they knew which were edible and which were poisonous. Also virtually all civilizations have taken advantage of the medicinal properties of plants. In most cultures the medicinal aspects of plants were closely guarded secrets and probably passed on from medicine man to medicine man. In almost all cultures, even today, medicinal information is concentrated in the hands of a few, whether it be witch doctors, medicine men, shamans or even doctors. As you will shortly see, its only in the past few hundred years that plant taxonomy has progressed past classification based on medicinal properties.

The International Plant Names Index is a database with bibliographic references for more than 1.3 million species of plants. An on-line Glossary of Roots of Botanical Names is available that will provide the meanings of many of the Latin and Greek words that serve as the roots of botanical scientific names.

Review the kingdoms of living things. Nomenclature: applying names to plants.
  • Common names are easy to pronounce and remember, but they are confusing because of their local nature.
  • Scientific names are formal names accepted by scientists around the world. In botany, all three components of a scientific name are important:
  • genus name
  • species name
  • authority - individual(s) responsible for the name. Components 1 and 2 are either italicized or underlined. An example: Quercus alba L.

    Plant Taxonomy Botanical Garden: Plant Taxonomy:
    This section occupies the central part of the Garden. The plots group species of flora according to the Engler taxonomical system, which is based on affinity. Trees and shrubs, perennial and annual plants, cryptogamic and flowering ones are grown here. Among the cryptogamic species the Royal and Ostrich Ferns capture attention. The most interesting gymnosperms are the following conifers: the Swamp Cypress, Mount Atlas Cedar, Japanese Cedar, Mammoth Tree, and the deciduous Maidenhair Tree. Of the monocotyledonous cryptogamic plants the families Liliaceae, Iridaceae and Amarillidaceae, and beautiful grasses, particularly Arudinaria as well as Zebra, Spear and Pampa Grasses, are worthy of notice. The dicotyledonous cryptogams are represented by species of the families Ranunculaceae, Malvaceae, Papaveraceae, Fabaceae, Rosaceae, Compositae, Labiatae and others. The genus Rhododendron is represented in the native flora by a single species, the Pontic Azalea, which flourishes in abundance at the edge of the pond
