(Most quotes verbatim William James, some paraphrased.) COMMENTs (Relevant to Pirsig, William James Sidis, and Quantonics Thinking Modes.) "' Intellectualism' is the belief that our mind comes upon a world complete in itself, and has the duty of ascertaining its contents; but has no power of re-determining its character, for that is already given "Among intellectualists two parties may be distinguished. Rationalizing intellectualists lay stress on deductive and 'dialectic' arguments , making large use of abstract concepts and pure logic (Hegel, Bradley, Taylor, Royce).

Return to Hughes-Buridan Book Review Here is an outline of what Hughes tells us about Buridan's theory of the meaning of truth:
  • Things that are true or false are propositions. ( Note 1: use Aristotle 1027b 18-20)
  • A proposition is a sentence token.
  • Two identical utterances or inscriptions of the same proposition are different propositions: They are equiform (isomorphic) propositions.
  • Existence of any proposition may be a function of time. If the proposition exists it may be true or false. If it does not exist it is 'mu.'
  • A proposition must be assertively spoken or written.
  • No part of a proposition is itself a proposition. A part could be a proposition if it were asserted on its own.
  • A proposition must be a meaningful sentence:
  • A proposition has meaning.
  • Convention determines meaning of a proposition
  • One proposition in two or more conventions may have multiple meanings.
  • One proposition may have conventional yet ambiguous meanings.
  • As long as the convention(s) and meaning(s) are unambiguous and the participants agree to abide them, propositions may be assessed for bivalent truth or falsity on those assumptions.
  • Languages are conventional media we use to express mental concepts.

See Op Well 100 + ops down the line and I’m still here and enjoying Ciao! and while I may not have been here for all that long compared to some I do now feel somewhat qualified to write about Ciao! or rather about my time here and my experiences while writing ops for this site. So here I am with my ( almost ) centennial opinion listing the things I like, dislike or just plainly don’t give a toss about regarding Ciao!
Oh yeah if you looked at my profile page and noticed that Ciao! says that this is my 107 th op that is not actually entirely true as this is actually my 108 th op but one of my ops got pulled as the web site it concerned was my own and when I wrote it I didn’t know that this would be an issue but I hold no grudges … besides it was funny changing colours then losing the points and moving back down one colour then having all the people who congratulated me on changing colour looking bewildered as to what happened.
But this tale starts at the beginning as all good tales do so lets go back to my first day at Ciao!

    A Platypus Workshop Report
I arrived in Norman, Oklahoma, just in time to share a solemn ritual of the Platypus Workshop. At a campus hangout called Mr. Bill's, 27 photographers and their instructors were celebrating the halfway mark in their two-week long boot camp. Deprived of sleep, overloaded with information, humiliated by their initial efforts, and elated by their eventual success, they were, for the moment, at one with the universe. That oneness, supplemented with food and beverage underwritten by Canon U.S.A., included a good measure of video enlightenment. By the end of the first week, each of the ten teams, consisting of two or three people, had completed a one-minute video assignment. These short reports, well shot and nicely edited, on small format digital video, by the newly hatched Platypi, proved their ability to tell non-fiction video stories. "This is one of the best groups we have ever taught," Dirck Halstead said in an email advisory from Oklahoma. "Reflecting the reach of The Digital Journalist, nearly one third of our students come from overseas. One of our scholarship students is a photographer from Central African Press in Nairobi. We also have a high concentration of students from Scandinavian countries."

    http://pl.atyp.us/content/other/animals.html
    Kangaroos and Wallabies
We saw many different kinds, everywhere we went, even in the wild. At Cradle Lake a couple of pademelons (a.k.a. rufous wallabies) were in our cabin's "back yard" and more often than not were nearby whenever we came in or out. At least one was carrying a joey, which made her even cuter. I thought we got some pictures, but I can't find them, so here's a picture of some other kind of wallaby at Lake St. Clair instead: The mother looks kind of mean, doesn't she? The joey's still cute, though.
    Koalas
They don't move much, and they have a strong smell. I really can't think of much more to say.
    Wombats
Not all that interesting, really, except for one thing: cubic poop. OK, sorry, I know that's kind of disgusting, but it's also pretty funny. How does a creature evolve to produce that? Wombats seem to like leaving their little treasures in highly-visible places, and it just so happens that the wooden walkways (amazingly common, even in remote sections of hiking trails) fit the bill.
    Tasmanian Devils
We actually saw one of these crossing the road near Cradle Mountain Lodge, but couldn't get a picture. Pictures, postcards, and puppets of these critters were almost annoyingly omnipresent in Tasmania but - like koalas - we just didn't find them interesting enough to seek out.

The venom of the platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus). The platypus(Ornithorhynchus anatinus) and its venomous characteristics in
    http://www.kingsnake.com/toxinology/mammals/platypus.html
The venom of the platypus ( Ornithorhynchus anatinus The platypus ( Ornithorhynchus anatinus The venom apparatus of the platypus is restricted to the male and externally consists of a pair of movable calcaneus spurs on each hind-limb. Each spur normally lies against the limb but is attached at its base to an articulating bone which allows it to be erected at right angles to the limb when required (Temple-Smith, 1973). At the base of the spur is a sac or reservoir from which a tiny duct extends through the spur. A large, distensible duct, which superficially traverses the biceps muscle, connects the reservoir to the crural venom gland. There appears to be a temporal relationship between breeding status and crural gland secretory activity. Fenner et al. (1992) provided the first clinical case report of platypus envenomation. They report that the affected patient, who received spur wounds to the hand, presented with oedema and lasting severe pain which did not respond effectively to morphine and was only alleviated following a wrist block. Laboratory blood tests revealed an increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), indicating possible coagualopathy. The pain in this case persisted for several months and substantially impaired use of the affected limb. Intense pain and oedema were similarly described in a more recent case reported by Tonkin and Negrine (1994), although the symptoms in this case subsided within several weeks. From the anecdotal accounts and the clinical case studies, it is apparent that pain and oedema are the major symptoms associated with platypus envenomation. There does not appear to be any evidence of systemic neurotoxicity, myotoxicity (although it should be noted that Fenner et al. (1992) reported "significant" forearm muscle wasting in the affected patient two weeks after envenomation but it was not established whether this was due to disuse of the affected limb because of the severe pain or caused directly by the venom) or necrotic effects and there have been no reported human fatalities.
