A Verse or Two The Poetry of members and friends T here are many amateur poets among the hiking community and it is a privilege to offer a forum for the publication of the works of some of these poets. If you would like a poem published on this page, please send it to me tim@footprint.co.za It's Three in the Morning This is a poem that I wrote at the Gorge Wellington hiking trail. There was a full moon and I slept outside but awoke just before three and started writing. At three in the morning one's thoughts run deep. The silence around me put me in a rather melancholy mood. I ts three in the morning, I cannot sleep, Around me, the sound of the bush sing Melodies that could make one weep. The moon is guiding my writing path, As I gaze into the glowing fire hearth. The embers of a once great flaming fire, Send me warmth as if by dying desire. The sounds of the bush will never fade away, But the embers of the fire have had their day, It is the story of life itself, A story of new beginnings and of final death

IRENE CHEYNE ANNETTE OF RIVER BEND 1941 DAVID OF THE STARS 1942 GOLDEN CAULIFLOWER (1937) LITTLE BLUE MOUNTAIN 1944 GLADYS LISTER GLADYS LISTER (nee Henriques) was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1887. She was the seventh of a family of ten which had emigrated from the USA. She spent her formative years at 'Cromarty,' an exclusive and private Melbourne school. When she was 14 the family moved to Perth. There she finished her schooling before the family moved once again - this time, to Sydney. Here, Gladys studied at the Julian Ashton Art School, just as did PIXIE O'HARRIS . Gladys married in 1913 and settled in Bellevue Hill. The couple had two children, Peter and Roberta, before moving to Vaucluse in 1923. [It can be pointed out to Sydneysiders that Vaucluse at that time was akin to settling on the far south coast these days. Million dollar mansions now occupy the area where once simple cottages abounded among mounds of shady English trees and gardens.] Gladys began seriously writing for children the year she attained her half-century - in 1937. Pixie O'Harris, then at radio station 2UE, encouraged her to write stories that would be suitable for broadcasting. Gladys found it a relatively simple matter to write using the surrounds of her own cottage and garden, filling the stories with fairies and gnomes as well as the familiar animals and birds.. These stories were eventually collected in her first publication, 'The Little Round Garden', illustrated by Pixie and published in 1938 by Angus and Robertson. At the beginning of the Second World War, thousands of children evacuated from Britain began to arrive in Australia, so Gladys began to write a series of books based on the adventures of these children in their new homeland. She donated the royalties from these books to the British Children's Comforts Fund, as well as staging many parties for the arriving children in her by now famous garden.
