INTRODUCTION
A VISIT WAS MADE to Poland in April 1977 to survey the current status of commercial fish farming and research programs related to fish culture in that country. Purpose of the survey was to evaluate prospects for increasing yield of fish through more intensive feeding of protein and energy rich feeds.ihe trip was arranged by the U. S. Feed Grains Council, the Agricultural Office of the U. S. Embassy in Poland, and the Institute of Zootechnics in Krakow, Poland.
Information for the survey was provided by the three supporting agencies mentioned above, by the Polish Academy of Sciences, and by other government and private concerns. Trips were made to several government experimental stations, research laboratories, and commercial rish farms. The itinerary for the visit is presented in Appendix I.
Fisheries scientists from the Institute of Zootechnics cooperated in designing a research project to be conducted at the fisheries research station at Zator, The project, which concerns various supplemental feeding practices to increase yield of carp in ponos, is explained in Appendix 2. This report presents data from the survey on the status of food fish culture in Poland, emphasizing the present state of the art, the environmental ana physical resources, and the potential for increasing yield and production of fish in the country.

June 16, 2000 This is Poland's culture capital, its Fun City. It is one of the very few old towns that was not razed by the Germans, the Allies or the Russians as World War II raged back and forth across the country.
THE BUZZ Cultural festivals are the talk of the town these days. Krakow is preparing to celebrate Midsummer's Eve on June 24. Traditionally, young women compete to create the prettiest floral wreaths, then pitch them in the Vistula River to catch a husband. Meanwhile, the Krakow 2000 festival will last all year and the Krakow Jewish Cultural Festival is in its 10th year, celebrating seven centuries of Jewish culture in the city. This year's Jewish festival runs from July 1 to 9 and brings with it an avalanche of klezmer music, a kind of Yiddish Jazz that originated in Eastern Europe, along with films and lectures on Jewish life and traditions. For more information visit www.krakow2000.pl and www.jewishfestival.art.pl.
Not to be missed is Kazimierz, the old Jewish quarter. Skip the allegedly kosher restaurants for a stop at Propaganda, a monument to communist kitsch, papered with inspirational posters and decorated with radios, film projectors, lamps and furniture in the cheap plastic and Formica drab that passed for socialist-era glitz; ul. Miodowa 20; open from 2 p.m. to midnight; no telephone.

We continue our series of articles about the place of Poland in Europe and in the world with this article about Poland's benefits from joining European Union. The expectations from joining European Union (EU) were very high a few years ago, especially since EU was seen as an alliance of rich Western European countries. Each new country joining the EU hoped to become the equal to the richest. Finally Poland had a chance to become a member of EU. When the negotiations were started it was clear that being a part of the big union of countries bring not only advantages but also problems and responsibilities. Especially since Europe is still in crisis marked with a low economical growth and also high unemployment in many Western Europe countries. Nevertheless, it seems that there is no any other alternative than joining the EU with all the luggage of benefits and possible problems. The opinion between Poles were very polarized. Since the beginning of the negotiations we had so called Euro-optimists, who enthusiastically suported EU. We have also so called Euro-skeptics for whom joining EU is the end of Poland in political, sociological and economical sense. Recently the new, not that extreme group is more visible, so called Euro-realists, who see the dangers but also the benefits of EU.

Poland is one of the bigger countries in Central Europe. But not too much is known about Poland and there are many misconceptions especially in the USA... Probably partly due to the fact that we were so long behind Iron Curtain. Although Poland's size is comparable in the size with New Mexico state, Poland is inhabited by almost 40 millions people (New Mexico has less than 2 millions of population). Climate in Poland and generally in Europe is much milder than in the USA with mild summers and winters and lots of rain. I was working in Poland as a guide part time. A tourist from the USA, a military officer stationed in Austria said, "I did not have an idea that Poland is bigger than Austria. I thought than Austria was bigger than Poland". On a couple of occasions when asked, "where I am from?" I answered "from Poland" then people confuse Poland with Holland. I heard several times: "Wow, Holland, I was there!". When I try to correct, "I am not from Holland but from Poland" then, there is a silence.

    VACCINIUM CULTURE IN POLAND
    Author:
    K. Pliszka Abstract:
Abundant natural growing areas of Vaccinium myrtillus L., V. vitis - idaea L. and V. uliginosum L. are found in Poland. Other species like Oxycoccus quadripetalus Gilib. are present at lower extent (Tab. 2). At the present time yield of wild fruits gathered is lower. This is due to many factors like: changes in the forest management, shortage of labour (pickers), and "an invasion" of urban people. Data in Tab. 3 shows wild fruits gathered by National Buying Company "LAS". Poland is a country with large areas of an acid, sandy soil. Some of these areas are limited for agricultural use. The commercial plantations, will be, in future an important source of supplying. In many countries, attemps are made for domestication of wild small fruit plants (spontaneous plant population). The magnificent development of the highbush blueberry Vacciniumcorymbosum L., as a cultivated fruit in America has forced some research workers of Poland to undertake studies on highbush blueberry culture. First efforts were made in 1924 by famous horticulturist Dr. Piotr Hoser and again in 1947. A real progress was made in the early seventies. In 1975, first commercial plantations were established. Today total acreage under cultivated bleuberries has reached 120 ha. Simultaneously, research work has been undertaken. There are many problems to be solved like: cultivar testing, winterhardiness, and pest and disease control. Also breeding programme has been initiated. Most of the blueberry research work is done at the Warsaw Agricultural University (SGGW). A special experimental field for "Vaccinium culture" was established nearby Warsaw (40 ha of forest land).
