Race to Reach the Last Child:
Countdown to a Polio-Free World
New: Summit outcomes Outcomes of the recent Global Polio Partners Summit include the Pledge and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative Strategic Plan See also the Statements page for photos and audio files of participants' statements. About the Summit Photo: Participants at the recent Polio Partners Summit stand in front of a clock created specifically for the polio eradication effort. Moments after this photo was taken, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and Thaddeus Farrow, who had polio, activated the clock to begin its countdown to 2005. Since the launch of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988, great progress has been made. At the end of 1999, there were approximately 7,000 reported cases of polio and 20,000 estimated cases compared with an estimated 350,000 cases in 1988. Photo: A girl toddler held by her mother receives a dose of oral polio vaccine, during an National Immunization Days (NID) campaign in Nairobi, Kenya. Purpose of the Summit The purpose of the summit was to re-focus attention on the final plans to eradicate and certify the world polio-free by 2005, and gather momentum and worldwide support. To that end, summit speakers focused on the three main challenges to certifying the world polio-free by 2005:

Polio vaccines and the origin of AIDS: some key writings
Go directly to key publications
Overview of the theory
One theory of the origin of AIDS is that it developed from contaminated vaccines used in the world's first mass immunisation for polio. There are a number of reasons why this theory is plausible enough to be worthy of further investigation.
  • The location coincides dramatically. The earliest known cases of AIDS occurred in central Africa, in the same regions where Koprowski's polio vaccine was given to over a million people in 1957-1960. The timing coincides. There is no documented case of HIV infection or AIDS before 1959. Centuries of the slave trade and European exploitation of Africa exposed Africans and others to all other diseases then known; it is implausible that HIV could have been present and spreading in Africa without being recognised. Polio vaccines are grown (cultured) on monkey kidneys which could have been contaminated by SIVs. Polio vaccines could not be screened for SIV contamination before 1985. Another monkey virus, SV-40, is known to have been passed to humans through polio vaccines. A specific pool of Koprowski's vaccine was later shown to have been contaminated by an unknown virus.

The artist's life and career are described briefly. Portrays her childhood polio, poverty and art, with reference to books and movies about her life and will.
http://www.lighthouse.ca/maud.html
Maud Lewis was born in Yarmouth County, and endured many hardships in her early life. As a teenager, she started to experience deformities of her face and hands as a result of a childhood disease. At age 18, she married Everett Lewis, and together they lived in a small one room house with sleeping loft, without benefit of electricity or plumbing. Although she suffered from physical handicaps, she made hand drawn Christmas cards and later, small brightly coloured paintings, which she sold to help overcome their poverty. She also painted birds, flowers and butterflies on various parts of the tiny house in which they lived, and many articles within the house. Examples of Maud's art can be found in the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, which has reconstructed her house and installed it in the gallery as part of a permanent Maud Lewis exhibit. Her work can also be found in the National Gallery of Canada and the Canadian Museum of Civilization. She is the subject of a book, "The Illuminated Life of Maud Lewis" , and a stage play has been written about her life. She is also the subject of two National Film Board of Canada documentaries, "

Polio Vaccination
Polio vaccine is given, by mouth, to protect (immunise) against Polio (or Poliomyelitis). In the UK it is usually given at two months, three months and four months, with a reinforcing dose (a booster) before school, usually between 3 and 5 years of age and again, before leaving school, between 15 and 19 years old. Boosters thereafter are not normally necessary, unless travelling to an area where polio is common, or likely to be exposed to people with polio.
The Vaccine
The vaccine contains live virus particles which have been altered (attenuated), to stop them from producing the effects of the actual disease. The idea is to fool the body's defence system into thinking it is under attack by the virus, and to produce defence mechanisms (antibodies) which will fight off the Polio virus if it is encountered in the future. Three types of poliomyelitis virus (Types 1, 2 and 3) are included in the vaccine. The attenuated virus particles settle in the bowel and the body forms antibodies in the bowel and in the bloodstream. The vaccine is given by mouth in the form of a few drops of liquid. Sometimes this is put on a sugar cube, as the drops are slightly bitter.

Zimbabwe Stories
UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2002 - Jeffrey Fenwick has had to leave Zimbabwe and his friends there as the political situation has become too unsafe for him and his family. He would like to thank everyone who has supported him in his efforts to bring aid to the sufferers of polio in his adopted country and looks forward to the day when he can return and continue his work. Please note changes on our How to Help page. When I was little, my best friend was my much older sister who had polio. She taught me to read, to think, and how to tell stories. So I owe her a lot. When June and I went to Zimbabwe to see my old friend Jeffery Fenwick I found that he was involved in helping disabled people, mostly polio victims. They are so courageous. For that reason, and for my sister’s sake I was glad to give him a hand. After all, Jeffery used to be my assistant priest so I was quite used to doing what he told me. Those people fight hard to have a decent life in spite of their disadvantages. They have so much guts and are so cheerful. It made me think what a soft life I have had by comparison. In Zimbabwe, disabled people are supposed to be supported out of taxes. But there never seems to be any money when it is needed. The taxes are there all right but the money seems to have evaporated before it reaches the needy. They have a real job to get enough to live. The Government and their many relations seem to be quite well fed though.

The Polio History Pages
Polio, or more properly poliomyelitis, was one of the most feared and studied diseases of the first half of the 20th Century. It appeared unpredictably, striking its victims, mostly children, with a frightening randomness that resulted in near panic during the epidemics of the 1940s and 50s. Then, in 1955, a breakthrough occurred when, after massive field trials involving nearly two-million children, the Salk vaccine was shown to be effective in preventing the disease. Today, polio is all-but-forgotten as it has completely disappeared from developed countries, and worldwide eradication is predicted by 2005. However, polio's legacy remains. It is estimated that there are 600,000 polio survivors living in the United States, and the number worldwide must be in the tens of millions. Drawing from my book, Polio's Legacy: An Oral History, this site provides everything teachers need to include information on polio in their unit on the 1950s or the history of disease, including excerpts from polio narratives; a polio timeline; and information about the disease, its history, and its late effects. The materials provided here should also be quite useful to students doing school reports on polio. If you have a specific question about polio, e-mail me at esass@csbsju.edu,

All Indian children under five will get the vaccine

WHO
Over 1.3 million volunteers and health workers will go on a house-to-house mission, in a bid to vaccinate every child under five years of age. Africa and Asia are the only continents which still report cases of polio. The WHO warns that further funding is needed if its to succeed in its target of freeing the whole world from the disease by 2005. Winning the war Last year was the target year set by the WHO to stop polio-virus transmission globally, but in 2002 India reported more than 1,500 new cases of the disease.

India has one of the world's highest rates of polio
By Karen Allen
BBC Health correspondent India is embarking on one of the most ambitious health programmes ever - immunising children against polio, which is a totally preventable disease. Poverty, poor sanitation and a dense population make this a fertile ground for infection
In six days it hopes to immunise about 160 million people. India is one of the last outposts where polio has a hold. Polio which used to paralyse 350,000 people a year - a third of them in India - is on the verge of becoming extinct. International agencies had hoped to complete the task by 2005, but with Uttar Pradesh in India registering a five fold increase in cases over the past two years, hopes of reaching that milestone look slim. Slipping through the net The northern densely populated state accounts for 68% of all infections in the world so the fate of the global eradication programme hinges on what can be achieved here in the coming months.

http://www.orthomed.com/polio.htm
July, The Treatment of Poliomyelitis and Other Virus Diseases with Vitamin C Fred R. Klenner, M.D., Reidsville, North Carolina IN A PREVIOUS REPORT dealing with the antagonistic properties of ascorbic acid to the virus of atypical pneumonia, mention was made of the fact that other types of virus infections had responded favorably to vitamin C. This paper is to present these findings as well as the results of subsequent studies on the virus of poliomyelitis, the viruses causing measles, mumps, chickenpox, herpes zoster, herpes simplex and influenza. Further studies with the virus of atypical pneumonia will also be discussed. These observations of the action of ascorbic acid on virus diseases were made independently of any knowledge of previous studies using vitamin C on virus pathology, except for the negative report of Sabin after treating Rhesus monkeys experimentally infected with the poliomyelitis virus. A review of the literature in preparation of this paper, however, presented an almost unbelievable record of such studies. The years of labor in animal experimentation, the cost in human effort and in "grants," and the volumes written, make it difficult to understand how so many investigators could have failed in comprehending the one thing that would have given positive results a decade ago

It aims to inform medical professionals, parents and the general public about short and longterm dangerous side-effects, including brain damage and death, of vaccines; of the ineffectiveness of vaccines in preventing infectious diseases, as shown by epidemics in fully vaccinated populations; and the causal link between DPT and polio vaccines and cot death.

The Controlled Clinical Trial: An Analysis
by Harris L. Coulter, Ph.D. In THE CONTROLLED CLINICAL TRIAL: AN ANALYSIS, Harris Coulter, author of DIVIDED LEGACY: A HISTORY OF THE SCHISM IN MEDICAL THOUGHT and DPT: A SHOT IN THE DARK, critically examines the usefulness of randomised clinical trials. His thorough research, based almost exclusively on medical literature, reveals why the "controlled clinical trial" (CCT) cannot guarantee drug safety and efficacy. Coulter argues that while allopaths talk pompously about this so-called "gold standard" of medicine, no controlled clinical trial matching the textbook definition has ever been performed. "Because the theoretical requirements are unrealistic and unscientific. How can you test a drug on 12 or 100 or 1,000 identical or 'homogenous' people all with the same thing wrong with them? Allopaths can't even find five homogenous patients. You'll always find things that are different between people, because we are all chemically, physically, structurally, and emotionally unique. The CCT can never tell a doctor how a given patient will react to a given drug at any given time. The findings from the so-called controlled clinical trial are useless in one-on-one doctor patient interactions." THE CONTROLLED CLINICAL TRIAL not only investigates the science behind the CCT, but also delves into its history and politics. According to Coulter, the CCT has become popular primarily for political reasons. "It's used as a stick to beat alternative medicine with for failing to perform these trials. Since these trials are very expensive it costs about $200 million today to get a new drug on the market the controlled clinical trial is really an instrument for limiting competition in medicine, and for raising the costs of medicines to the public."
