Opinion: Ban Political and Moral Cowardice Guest Commentary by Sean Broderick
the People's Voice ~ Tuesday, March 21, 2000 Broderick
Recently, there has been much talk and action about imposing a moratorium on the death penalty.  The reasons vary, but the point is the same.  It is a punishment both extreme and permanent.  It is imposed under a system that is imperfect at best and sometimes simply corrupt.  This moratorium movement should be applauded and pursued because it is righteous.   However, the ultimate success of that movement will not solve the problems we face today.  Instead, we need a moratoria on political and moral cowardice.  We need to return to a society in which our appointed and elected officials have the courage to lead.  That movement, and none other, offers the only hope that we can conquer the societal problems we face entering the 21st century.   I was one of many people who had the honor of representing Darrell Young Elk Rich over the past years.  He died some 13 minutes past midnight on March 15, 2000.  He was executed in the "death chamber" at San Quentin State Prison.  I saw him die with dignity.   Young Elk's last message was a single word: "Peace."  His last meal was donated to feed the homeless.  His last thoughts were filled with sadness, sorrow and forgiveness.

Montana Wildfires Used In Political Agends
Shame on Montana Wood Products Association,
Shame on Governor Racicot, Shame on Congressman Hill Native Forest Network News
the People's Voice ~ Tuesday, August 15, 2000
MISSOULA, MT - With wildfires currently burning throughout Montana, and much of the western United States, it is unfortunate that the Montana Wood Products Association, Governor Racicot and Congressman Hill have decided to use this dire situation to push their political and economic agenda of increasing logging and roadbuilding in America's National Forests. "Obviously, at this critical time for families and communities throughout the Rockies, the desperate and unethical calls of the timber industry and their supporters to increase logging and roadbuilding in National Forests requires a response," said Phil Knight of the Native Forest Network. "While people lose their homes to raging, unstoppable wildfires and the rest of us choke on smoke, Hill, Racicot and the timber barons blame the National Forest Roadless Initiative and decreased timber sales in National Forests for the fires, hoping to whip people into a hysteria to change public trends and attitudes about National Forest protection efforts they disagree with. Hill and Racicot should be spending their time helping those affected by the wildfires, rather than lobbying for industry to increase timber cutting and roadbuilding in National Forests." "The calls by the timber industry and their supporters to increase logging in National Forests to reduce the risk of fire-at a time when families and communities are pulling together to cope with the situation-are not only highly unethical and immoral, but they are also not backed up by the facts," said Matthew Koehler of the Native Forest Network.

Posted on Tue, Feb. 04, 2003 William Burrows: Internal tug-of-war hobbles space program By William E. Burrows President Bush's remarks after Saturday's tragic loss of the orbiter Columbia and its crew of seven were comforting, but they ignore the fact that the space program has been the stepchild of successive administrations since the Apollo program aimed Americans at the moon. ``The cause in which they died will continue,'' the president said, unaware of the bitter irony of that statement. The cause in which those incredibly brave, intelligent and accomplished astronauts died was that of trying to help hold the manned space program together with a chronically inadequate budget and what is basically the same Roman-candle technology that was used in the Apollo program. The space program's various constituents traditionally have had to fight each other for funding in a process that is as counterproductive as it is degrading. In the 1960s, with the Apollo moon landing program a clearly delineated political goal, adequate funding was channeled where it was needed. But a long budgetary slide started in 1966, even before astronauts reached the moon.
