Friday, 9 June, 2000, 18:25 GMT 19:25 UK North Korea: A political history
On parade: North Korea has made no secret of its military strength
When Kim Il-sung died in July 1994, North Koreans had never known anything else. The 'Great Leader' had shaped and dominated political and economic affairs for almost half a century.
Kim Il-sung: The 'eternal' president
The outpouring of grief was extraordinary: a product of decades of exposure to a grotesque cult of personality. Indeed such has been the isolation of this tiny country that it may be many years before North Koreans realise the true legacy of the Kim Il-sung years, and how far and how fast their fortunes have fallen. Cold war warriors The northern half of Korea was born on 9 September 1948 amid the chaos following the end of World War II. Supported by the Soviet Union, the charismatic Kim Il-sung embarked on a series of popular social and economic reforms, including the redistribution of land and nationalisation of Japanese property. This gave the communists considerable support, while simultaneously driving many of the skilled and richer parts of the population to the South.

Not a Pax Americana enforced on the world by American weapons of war. Not the peace of the grave or the security of the slave. I am talking about genuine peace, the kind of peace that makes life on earth worth living, the kind that enables men and nations to grow and to hope and to build a better life for their children not merely peace for Americans but peace for all men and women not merely peace in our time but peace for all time."

Falwell Brands Mohammed A 'Terrorist'
Oct. 6, 2002
The Rev. Jerry Falwell (AP)
(CBS) What's the number one item on the agenda of the Christian Right? Abortion? School Prayer? No and No. Believe it or not, what's most important to a lot of conservative Christians is the Jewish State. Israel: Its size, its strength, and its survival. Why?
Bob Simon reports.
There is the alliance between America and Israel in the war on Islamic terror. But it goes deeper. For Christians who interpret the bible in a literal fashion, Israel has a crucial role to play in bringing on the Second Coming of Christ. This Friday, thousands are expected to gather on the Mall in Washington to express their faith and to lobby the administration. The rally is being organized by the Christian Coalition, which wants to make sure that the Bush Administration sees the struggle in the Middle East between Jews and Muslims their way - the Christian way.
At one congregation in Colorado, it’s Israel Awareness Day. But this is not a Jewish congregation. They are all Christians. Not only are they holding these pep rallies all across America, they’re also streaming here to Israel, to the dangerous streets of Jerusalem to express their undying devotion.

  • Grounded A federal agency confirms that it maintains an air-travel blacklist of 1,000 people. Peace activists and civil libertarians fear they're on it. By Dave Lindorff Barbara Olshansky was at a Newark International Airport departure gate last May when an airline agent at the counter checking her boarding pass called airport security. Olshansky was subjected to a close search and then, though she was in view of other travelers, was ordered to pull her pants down. The Sept. 11 terrorist attacks may have created a new era in airport security, but even so, she was embarrassed and annoyed. Perhaps one such incident might've been forgotten, but Olshansky, the assistant legal director for the left-leaning Center for Constitutional Rights, was pulled out of line for special attention the next time she flew. And the next time. And the next time. On one flight this past September from Newark to Washington, six members of the center's staff, including Olshansky, were stopped and subjected to intense scrutiny, even though they had purchased their tickets independently and had not checked in as a group. On that occasion, Olshansky got angry and demanded to know why she had been singled out.

    Lawmakers blast Pledge ruling
Students at a school in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley recite the Pledge of Allegiance in this October 2001 file photo. SAN FRANCISCO, California (CNN) "Political correctness run amok" is how one senator is describing a court's ruling that the Pledge of Allegiance is unconstitutional. A federal appeals court ruled Wednesday that reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools is an unconstitutional "endorsement of religion" because of the addition of the phrase "under God" in 1954 by Congress. A three-member panel of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals remanded the case to a lower court. If allowed to stand, the ruling would apply to schools in the nine states covered by the 9th Circuit. ( Analyst on whether it will stand The defendants the federal and state governments and the local school board also have the option of appealing the ruling to the full appeals court or directly to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The people behind the news October 22, 2001 The September 11 attacks on the US had Singaporeans glued to the news on TV. We speak to the people behind the news on Channel NewsAsia, News 5 and 8 who continue to bring you minute-by-minute reports on the American crisis right up to this day. By Angelene Wong Hwee Goh, Political reporter with CNA
Like the Chinese team, the English news team at CNA went 24 hours on the 1st night when news of the attacks on US broke out.
It was a scramble for the phones as editors and reporters began calling up its US correspondents and Singaporeans living and working in New York. They also contacted Professor Chan Heng Chee, Singapore Ambassador to the US to check if any Singaporeans had been involved in the tragic turn of events.
Said Hwee Goh, political reporter “I saw a lot of people running around and local reporters were roped in to produce reports on how Asian countries are reacting. We also helped to collate reports for special programmes and conceptualize different programmes on how Singaporeans are taking it.”
On how workflow changed when the shocking news broke, Hwee said, “Our days were definitely longer. Some reporters and especially those on the output side (anchors, producers and studio crew) stayed through the night to get it (news) out as soon as possible.”

Poet shares poems and political ideas
    By Marissa Lowman
    February 14, 2003
Nikki Giovanni, one of the most prominent contemporary black poets, came to Hopkins on Monday, Feb. 3 as part of the celebration of Black History Month. Although the stage in Shriver was bare, except for a white folding screen which was used as a backdrop, Giovanni filled it with her outspoken humor. A petite, white-haired woman, she wore a green suit with a bright purple blouse. The audience warmed up quickly to this woman who was not afraid to say Bush is nuts or to promote affirmative action. She became interested in creative writing in college because she liked storytelling. When she was younger, she said, "I always knew what I saw. If I could see, I could write." She was surprised that it has taken so long for America to celebrate Black History Month and was happy to participate as a keynote speaker, noting, "Black American history is a wonderful, brave history. They came through all that and found a way to sing." She grew up in Knoxville, Tenn. and attended the all-black Fisk University, where she majored in history. She became involved in the Black Arts movement in 1967, in which a group of black intellectuals tried to promote black rights by writing poems that were both political and radical. She currently lives in Virginia where she teaches English.
