ABSTRACT

This study was an opinion survey of 334 people, 100 radio station administrators and radio program hosts and 234 listeners, regarding the presentation of local politics news through radio stations in Chiang Mai province.
Contentwise, it was discovered that aired news should have been more neutral than it currently was. It was thought the media might have been under the influence of local politicians, thus, depriving certain news items their due credibility. Moreover, Listeners reported that they need radio stations' activities to be participated by local or community representatives.
At the same time, it was recommended that radio station administrators / managers be those with proper visions and conduct their daily affairs on a teamwork basic.
Bureaucracy-based style of work was found to have caused delayed presentation of certain news. However, most listeners agreed with the station' 06.00-07.00 a.m. and 4.00-5.00 p.m. news presentation schedules.

The FBI ... The Taliban ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: The United States is reaching out to potential allies inside Afghanistan who are opposed to the ruling Taliban government. Potential Afghan allies elsewhere are being contacted, too. A U.S. Congressional delegation will meet with the exiled King Mohammed Zahir Shah in Rome this weekend. At the same time, there are a number of reports of dissension within the Taliban itself. The militant Islamic government controls around 90 percent of the country. Its base is made up of Pashtun- speaking people, who are the majority of Afghanistan. The rest of the country is controlled mainly by a coalition of groups known as the Northern Alliance or United Front. Its ranks include such minority groups as Tajiks and Uzbeks.

Believing the human species could be improved through the control of hereditary factors in mating, eugenicists during the Great Depression blamed immigrants, the mentally disabled and incarcerated people for society's woes and advocated the sterilization of people they considered defective. Now that economic times are turning bad again, some wonder whether the eugenics movement, in one form or another, may return.

Telecommunications monopolies attacked. An Information Technology conference in Suva, Fiji, yesterday called on Pacific Islands governments to free up the technology sector and break up monopolies. A paper by the Pacific Islands News Association said: 'Compared to the rest of the world, access to the new media in the Pacific Islands is expensive, slow and unreliable. Governments should be urged to liberalise the telecommunication sector. Breaking up monopolies and introducing competition should improve services and reduce costs for users. 'Governments must ensure widespread access to telecommunication services through subsidies and appropriate access requirements in licensing or franchising agreements.' Thomas Hutchinson, the last Royal Governor of Massachusetts, had a summer estate in Milton on Adams Street. For many years, I have studied the house and gardens of Governor Hutchinson who lived in Milton in the summertime from 1742 until 1774, and I have come to this conclusion: Just as John Adams of Quincy is freshly considered a great father of our country because of a new biography, one day Governor Thomas Hutchinson will be recognized for his contribution to our country. All it would take is for a respected author with a popular following to feel that Gov. Hutchinson in his public service was a major contributor and publish a new book about it. The only two printed biographies of Gov. Hutchinson have both hinted at such a phenomenon.

Stanford Report, May 8, 2002 Partisan voters most likely to be influenced by political predictions, study finds BY KATHLEEN O'TOOLE News media often are criticized for covering presidential campaigns as if they were horse races and for predicting the winner before the polls close in all states. A new study suggests that some voters indeed might be influenced by predictions of who is likely to win. Surprisingly, it is the most partisan voters not the undecideds who are most likely to become more favorably disposed toward a leading candidate whom they initially opposed. In the week immediately preceding the 2000 U.S. presidential election, Business School graduate students Aaron Kay and Maria Cristina Jimenez polled 288 people in the San Francisco Bay Area in collaboration with John Jost, associate professor of organizational behavior. They approached people at shopping malls, airports and on campus, and asked them to evaluate candidates George Bush and Al Gore after reading a purportedly authoritative analysis of the election's likely outcome. Some respondents read that experts expected Bush to win by a wide margin, others read he would win narrowly, while still others read predictions of a Gore landslide, narrow victory or a tie. Participants were then asked to rate the desirability of both Gore and Bush presidencies on a scale of 1 to 9 and also to indicate their own party affiliation.

PM's remarks in JS offensive: Hasina
    UNB, Dhaka
Leader of the Opposition in parliament Sheikh Hasina yesterday said Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's "offensive" remarks in the JS would make her think twice about going back to the House. "How could the PM say that she would not allow me to speak. I am the leader of the opposition and also the former prime minister. Is it the proper parliamentary language?" she told reporters at the VIP lounge of the Zia International Airport prior to leaving for Saudi Arabia to perform hajj. Hasina said she had a lot of issues to raise in parliament on Sunday including indemnity, price hike and law and order, but was stopped abruptly. She said the prime minister comes to the parliament to "gag the opposition". Hasina said the opposition would protest the indemnity ordinance designed to protect those responsible for custodial deaths during the Operation Clean Heart as it "goes against humanity, constitution and also against the spirit of the Geneva Convention". She questioned why the opposition would not be allowed to talk about the indemnity ordinance and the US decision on new immigration rules imposed on Bangladeshis.
