April 16, 2002 Liberal bills on income assistance attack poor, people with disabilities to pay for tax cuts to rich, big business, labour charges Changes introduced yesterday to BC's income assistance and disability benefits programs are "a savage attack on the poor and people with disabilities to pay for the Liberals' massive tax cuts to the rich and big business," says B.C. Federation of Labour President Jim Sinclair. Sinclair said the bills introduced into the Legislature Monday mean no segment of BC society is safe from the Campbell government's desperate struggle to balance its books, regardless of the consequences for people or services. "Although unemployment has been rising in this province while the rest of Canada enjoys a recovery, the Campbell government proposes to force British Columbians off income assistance into a non-existent job market, even if they have disabilities," Sinclair said. The BC Coalition of People with Disabilities had enlisted the support of more than 400 disability groups for its campaign to protect the Disability Benefits Program Act, he added, but the government is driving through its changes anyway.

Sailors' honor
- The Orlando Sentinel
The man with the red-rimmed eyes had come a long way to step onto this ship, 1,000 miles from his home and 59 years from his youth. The journey had taken him across the Atlantic 10 times, through enemy fire and vicious storms and into the racist heart of the 1940s Navy.
When asked Wednesday whether he would answer a few questions, he had one request.
"Yeah, you can ask me some questions, as long as I don't have to cry," Winfrey Roberts said. "I don't want to cry anymore."
The tears have been falling because the Navy plans a special honor Saturday for Roberts, 80, and many of the 159 other men who in 1944 formed the Navy's first all-black enlisted crew when the destroyer-escort USS Mason was commissioned.
They were the first black men the Navy ever allowed to serve as anything other than cooks or stewards. Critics derided the ship as "Eleanor's folly," a sneering commentary on first lady Eleanor Roosevelt's support for black sailors, but the crew of the Mason sailed with such bravery during World War II, in conditions that sent other ships back to shore, that their convoy commander recommended the entire crew for commendation.
That recommendation was ignored for 50 years, and the Mason was torn apart and sold for scrap in 1947. President Clinton finally awarded the commendation to the destroyer's 67 surviving crew members in 1994.

Unlike most city agencies, the port is self-sustaining and provides tax dollars to city coffers. The port staff and its consultants devoted much of their study to the economic feasibility of whether Chelsea or Mills could pull the project off, and whether either had long-term staying power with residents of San Francisco. Prison guards may get raise windfall
California prison officers stand to receive a raise of as much as 7% on July 1, twice what negotiators for Gov. Gray Davis estimated when the governor agreed to a new contract last year. The cost $67 million more than anticipated comes as the state struggles with a budget shortfall of as much as $35 billion, and as Davis calls on all state workers to accept deep pay cuts. Dan Morain in the Los Angeles Times Californians targeted for city, county taxes Californians would pay city and county income taxes on top of their state and federal personal income taxes under a controversial new bill that cleared its first legislative hurdle Wednesday. The Assembly Local Government Committee sent the measure by Assemblyman Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, to a second committee test on the way to the full Assembly floor. Steve Geissinger in the Oakland Tribune Plan for sales tax on services gets mixed reviews at hearing A plan to raise billions of dollars by imposing sales taxes on myriad services drew mixed reviews yesterday during a hearing before a state Senate committee. The idea, being pushed by Sen. Gilbert Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, the chairman of the Senate Revenue and Taxation Committee, would be to extend the sales tax to thousands of services provided by businesses, ranging from gardeners and dry cleaners to attorneys and accountants. Political and Constitutional Theory for Citizens
Center for Civic Education
LOS ANGELES, California The Center for Civic Education is pleased to announce a three-week National Academy for educators from upper elementary, middle, and high schools to be held at Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, California. The Academy will provide twenty-five American and two to five international educators the opportunity to engage in serious study and seminar-style discussion of important literature dealing with basic issues of political theory as well as values and principles of American constitutional democracy. The Academic Director of the Academy will be Professor Will Harris of the University of Pennsylvania. Participants in the institute will study major works of political theory such as Aristotle's Politics, Hobbes' Leviathan, Locke's Second Treatise, and The Federalist and anti-federalist writings, as well as U.S. Supreme Court opinions. Educators will discuss the challenges of teaching this material and meeting the goals of the We the People... programs, the National Standards for Civics and Government, and the international framework for Education for Democratic Citizenship. Overview The writings of political thinkers of the past as well as contemporary social science research tell us that a citizenry that fully understands the fundamental principles and values of a system of constitutional democracy is a prerequisite for the successful functioning of that system.

Peace means more than an absence of war, crime, loneliness, despair, misuse of drugs, etc. It is a positive attitude in the life of every individual. A set of values that are designed to give dignity to all people, like tolerance, friendliness, caring, justice, etc. that can best be summed up as respect for self, for others, for life, for God from any point of view, for property, for the law and the environment.

97. Presidents Day Awash In Political Rhetoric
Editorial about political rhetoric from February, 1996 issue of the University of Tennessee Daily Beacon.
http://dailybeacon.utk.edu/issues/v71/n26/people.26v.html
FROM THE FEBRUARY 19, 1996 ISSUE
Presidents Day awash in political rhetoric
ELIZABETH A. DAVIS
Daily Beacon Editor
As the country honors Presidents Day by closing banks and having sales at furniture stores, Presidential contenders are campaigning for the same office held by men as such George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln. These three men, along with some others, are considered big factors in the history of our country. Without Washington's leadership would the United States be the country it is today? Without Jefferson, would the United States have gotten the Louisiana Purchase? Without Lincoln, would this country still be one nation, not separated? The Oval Office is a big office to fill. Today people complain that the politicians vying for the job are hollow talking heads with no real message or way to solve national problems. After the Republican candidates debate in New Hampshire Thursday, CNN polled audience members about the messages they were hearing. Many said they heard negative messages, sparked by negative ads and arguing amongst the candidates while others were trying to talk. It was distracting for other candidates to butt in while someone else was talking, and the audience members did not approve. CNN measured individual audience reaction and showed the reactions went lower as the debaters pounced on each other or made a negative comment. The audience, made up of undecided Republican voters, said they did not make up their minds even after hearing the debate. "I wanted to hear more new ideas," several people said. Perhaps the politicians do not know what new ideas to talk about. Is someone going to propose eliminating income tax, prohibiting the use of food stamps for high-cholesteral foods or discontinuing the celebration of Thanksgiving? Politicians have to be careful with new ideas because the ideas might sound too off-the-wall.

The Political Action Committee for People with Psoriasis
Psoriasis Sufferers Unite! If you live with psoriasis, you already know about the physical and emotional pain that this disease causes. There are several new drugs that have proven to be very effective for the treatment of psoriasis. Patients currently enrolled in clinical trials are getting relief that is nothing short of miraculous. So there’s hope for us, right? Maybe, maybe not. There are two major obstacles keeping new drugs from coming to market. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the insurance companies. The FDA is putting unreasonable testing requirements on the drug companies and not allowing for any compassionate use. Insurance companies think the cost of the new treatments is too high for a “cosmetic condition” like psoriasis. COSMETIC CONDITION? Are they crazy? Don’t any of these people have psoriasis? How can companies that deal in healthcare say that psoriasis is a cosmetic condition? Are they unaware of how much agony this disease causes? Why is our government letting them get away with this? It might have something to do with the millions of dollars contributed to the politicians by the insurance companies.

99. A Few Key Bits Of Bi Politics
Article about the differences and samenesses of repression and discrimination of gay and lesbian people versus bisexual people.
http://www.uncharted-worlds.org/bi/bipol.htm
A few key political issues for bi people
1 Homophobia
a) It's often naïvely assumed that homophobia affects bi people only when they are in same-sex relationships. This is equivalent to suggesting that homophobia has no effect on lesbians or gay men who aren't currently in relationships. It denies the effect of being surrounded by a culture that often would prefer that you didn't exist. Bi people are just as likely as gay people to suffer from low self-esteem, internalised homophobia, and fear of the consequences of expressing their sexuality. b) Bisexuals who end up living monogamously with an other-sex partner do to some degree escape the most dangerous or oppressive consequences of homophobia. This is sometimes suggested as the "easy way out". It does however depend on falling in love with someone of "the right sex". Bi people still have a good chance of being under homophobic pressure to deny their feelings for someone they're in love with.
Even while in an other-sex relationship, bi people may be hassled for looking gay on the street, or for taking part in gay activism or obviously queer social events. In many respects they still have to make choices about "how far out to be" that are similar to the choices gay and lesbian people face.
