James K Polk's Inaugural Address. Could James K. Polk get elected today? 1)Summary of his accomplishments: Went down in history books as the president who got all those stuff, all those large landmasses, Texas, Oregon, California. He was the president of Manifest Destiny a phrase coined by newspaper editor John O'Sullivan in 1845 to justify the annexation of Texas. James Polk extended the Nation's boundaries to the shores of the Pacific. Polk was an expansionist. Polk tried to buy California and New Mexico from Mexico, and the Mexican war followed (1846-48) when his offer was rejected. Under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, ending the war Mexico got $ 15 million for the land which is now known as California, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado. With the Oregon Treaty of 1846 Polk set the border with England (Canadian border) at the 49th parallel. 2)Critique: He started the Mexican War. Polk played high stakes gambling in politics. About Polk's risky foreign policy America Past and Present says, His reckless diplomacy had brought the Nation within an eyelash of being involved in two wars at the same time.

James K Polk
11th President of the United States (1845 - 49) Ancestral Ulster County: Londonderry
Birthplace: Charlotte, North Carolina
Religious Denomination: Presbyterian, (although. a Methodist before his death) James Knox Polk was born 2 November 1795, near Charlotte, North Carolina. The man who was destined to give practical expression to the phrase 'manifest destiny' was descended from a Robert Polk from Londonderry, who had arrived in the American Colonies about 1680. It is likely that the surname Polk was a corruption of the name Pollock after James Polks ancestors had arrived in America. Like Andrew Jackson, Polk began his career as a lawyer and soon became an active member of the Democratic Party. His presidency is remembered chiefly for the successful war against Mexico (1846 - 48) resulting in the acquisition of much of what now forms the south-western United States, ie Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada and California. The result was that the United States doubled in size under Polk's presidency, an increase greater than under any other president. But the strain of office took its toll and Polk died just three months after leaving the White House, in June 1849. His legacy to his country has insured that he will not be forgotten, for when one speaks of'manifest destiny', more than anyone else, one thinks of James Polk.

    JAMES KNOX POLK
Eleventh President of the United States, 1845 - 1849 James K. Polk was born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina on November 2, 1795. The Polk family (the original family name was Pollock) came to Maryland in 1680 and gradually moved southward to North Carolina. In 1806, when James was eleven years old, the Polk family moved to Tennessee where James' father was a farmer and surveyor. Young James attended nearby academics and in 1815 entered the sophomore class at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He graduated in 1818 with high honors. Polk returned to Tennessee and practiced law until his election as president. His success as a lawyer brought him into politics and his speeches won him the nickname "Napoleon of the Stump". He was a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives when he married Sarah Childress in 1822. In 1825 Polk was elected to the first of his seven terms in Congress and in 1835 he was chosen Speaker of the House. He refused renomination for Congress in 1839 to become a successful Democratic candidate for the governor of Tennessee. In 1840 public sentiment began to favor the Whigs, and consequently in 1841 and 1843 Polk was defeated in his attempt to be re-elected governor of Tennessee.

Keep in mind that in the table above, the % of the U.S. population for religious groups are current figures. Religious groups have had much different proportions at various time in U.S. history. One of the most over-represented religious groups among U.S. presidents is Unitarianism. The combined proportion of Unitarian Universalists in the U.S. population is just 0.2% of the population (one in every 500 Americans). Yet there have been 4 Unitarian presidents. On the other end of the scale, the most under-represented religious group is Catholicism, which has had only one U.S. president (John F. Kennedy), despite making up 26% of the current U.S. population. Major religious groups in the U.S. which have never had a U.S. president include: Lutherans (about 5% of the U.S. population); Jews (about 2% of the U.S. population); Latter-day Saints (2%); Pentecostals (about 1.8 %); Muslims (approx. 1 to 1.5%); Eastern Orthodox (approx. 1%); and Churches of Christ (1%). Fast Fact: James K. Polk extended the Nation's boundaries to the shores of the Pacific Biography: Often referred to as the first "dark horse" President, James K. Polk was the last of the Jacksonians to sit in the White House, and the last strong President until the Civil War. He was born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, in 1795. Studious and industrious, Polk was graduated with honors in 1818 from the University of North Carolina. As a young lawyer he entered politics, served in the Tennessee legislature, and became a friend of Andrew Jackson. In the House of Representatives, Polk was a chief lieutenant of Jackson in his Bank war. He served as Speaker between 1835 and 1839, leaving to become Governor of Tennessee. Until circumstances raised Polk's ambitions, he was a leading contender for the Democratic nomination for Vice President in 1844. Both Martin Van Buren, who had been expected to win the Democratic nomination for President, and Henry Clay, who was to be the Whig nominee, tried to take the expansionist issue out of the campaign by declaring themselves opposed to the annexation of Texas. Polk, however, publicly asserted that Texas should be "re-annexed" and all of Oregon "re-occupied."

JAMES POLK 11th President of the United States A lawyer and former congressman from Tennessee, Polk became a "dark horse" candidate for the Democratic Party in 1844. He narrowly defeated Whig Henry Clay in the general election and succeeded John Tyler to the presidency. His administration's biggest event was the Mexican War, which bolstered his expansionist policies. Also during his term, the Oregon question was settled and for the first time United States territory extended to the Pacific Ocean. Polk served only one term, but is considered to have been one of the more productive guys to ever hold the office. He was succeeded by Zachary Taylor

Best Sellers John Adams by David McCullough Left to his own devices, John Adams might have lived out his days as a Massachusetts country lawyer, devoted to his family and friends. As it was, events swiftly overtook him, and Adamswho, David McCullough writes, was "not a man of the world" and not fond of politicscame to greatness as the second president of the United States, and one of the most distinguished of a generation of revolutionary leaders. He found reason to dislike sectarian wrangling even more in the aftermath of war, when Federalist and anti-Federalist factions vied bitterly for power, introducing scandal into an administration beset by other difficultiesincluding pirates on the high seas, conflict with France and England, and all the public controversy attendant in building a nation. Overshadowed by the lustrous presidents Washington and Jefferson, who bracketed his tenure in office, Adams emerges from McCullough's brilliant biography as a truly heroic figurenot only for his significant role in the American Revolution but also for maintaining his personal integrity in its strife-filled aftermath. McCullough spends much of his narrative examining the troubled friendship between Adams and Jefferson, who had in common a love for books and ideas but differed on almost every other imaginable point. Reading his pages, it is easy to imagine the two as alter egos. (Strangely, both died on the same day, the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.) But McCullough also considers Adams in his own light, and the portrait that emerges is altogether fascinating.

    James K. Polk
James K. Polk never set foot in Texas. His impact on Texas and the American West, however, cannot be overestimated. Not only was he instrumental in the annexation of Texas, but the United States achieved its greatest territorial expansion under his presidency. Born 2 November 1795 in North Carolina, Polk spent much of his youth in central Tennessee. Trained as a lawyer, Polk's interest in politics surfaced at an early age. He was elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives in 1823. Fellow Tennessean Andrew "Old Hickory" Jackson took such an interest in the young statesman that for years Polk was referred to as "Young Hickory." Under "Old Hickory's" tutelage, Polk served seven consecutive terms in the U. S. House of Representatives. Upon Jackson's urging, Polk ran and was elected Governor of Tennessee in 1839. He then became a darkhorse candidate for president in 1844. Former President Martin Van Buren, the leading democratic candidate in the 1844 campaign, alienated the West and the South on the issue of Texas annexation. As a result, Van Buren failed to achieve the two-thirds majority then required for nomination at the Democratic convention. Unable to resolve the impasse, the convention, in their eight ballot, selected Polk as the compromise candidate. With the annexation of Texas as a key campaign issue, Polk went on to win the election. As president, Polk achieved the marked distinction of making good on all of his campaign goals. These included the annexation of Texas, which became the 28th state with legislation that he signed on 29 December 1845.
