Its theme, Language - Communication - Culture, offers Communication as a theoretical linking term between Language and Culture and in this way a descriptive and a theoretical role. On the one hand, it opens the Evora English Language focus to wider interdisciplinary concerns; on the other, it grounds the Lisbon Culture Conference in the contexts and practices of English, its conditions and means (the Englishes of the English-speaking nations and the =93new englishes=94 of transnational communication). • Museums A short, 15-minute walk from the centre of Lisbon is the Museu Calouste Gulbenkian, which is located in the Praca de Espanha. Calouste Gulbenkian was a Turkish-born British oil magnate and philanthropist of Armenian descent, who donated his life's collection of classical and neoclassical art to the people of Portugal. Set in lush grounds, the museum represents Portugal's finest art collection. The first part of the collection is devoted to classical Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Islamic, and Asian art; the second part to other European acquisitions representing all major schools from the 15th to the 20th century. The Museu de Arte Antiga (Museum of Ancient Art) features a beautifully displayed collection of Portuguese art from the 15th to the 19th century. Apart from the Gulbenkian, this is the most important museum in Lisbon. The St Vincent Altarpiece by Nuno Goncalves is a fine example of 15th-century Portuguese art. The six panels include a depiction of Prince Henry the Navigator.
  • Churches The Se , or cathedral, was founded in 1150 to commemorate Ferdinand of Leon and Castilla's victory over the Moors. The cathedral has a fine, though austere, Romanesque interior and a wonderful 13th-century cloister. The sacristy holds the relics of St Vincent and a fine collection of religious artefacts.

    Highlights
Portugal - prospering in the Union
Since accession to the EU in 1986, Portugal has experienced an unprecedented economic boom. Over the last ten years per capita income in Portugal has doubled. Among the factors responsible for this leap in prosperity are the lowest rate of industrial disputes and the longest working week in the EU - music to the ears of foreign investors.
    The garden of Portugal
A favourite holiday destination of millions, the Algarve is all too often considered to be little more than a narrow stretch of coastline, a blinkered view which ignores the equally majestic hinterland. Under the 500-year long rule of the Moors this region blossomed into a rich cornucopian. The Arabic influence lingers to this day in both language and architecture; the name "Algarve", for instance, comes from the Arabic "Al-Gharb", meaning "Western".
The home of cork and marble
    Tradition
    Thirst for discovery
In the 15th century the famous mariner Henry the Navigator founded a school for navigation at Cape São Vincente. It was from here that the famous Portuguese voyages of discovery set sail. Portugal was the nation that proved to the rest of Europe that the earth was, in fact, round and that it was possible to navigate by the stars. In 1488 Bartholemew Dias circumnavigated the Cape of Good Hope (as he named it), in 1498 Vasco de Gamma discovered the long sought-after sea passage to India and in 1519 Magellan finally became the first seafarer to circumnavigate the globe.

Travel Center Country Guide: PORTUGAL Business Culture Greetings and Courtesies Decision Making Women Business Attire GREETINGS AND COURTESIES BUSINESS ETHIC AND FRAMEWORK The Portuguese businessperson is usually conservative and formal, and at the same time courteous and gracious. Business style is restrained but not formal and Portuguese businesses prefer careful preparation and clear terms. Individualism is important, but emphasis in terms of respect and deference is usually placed on age, seniority, educational background, and financial standing. The contract has always been honored and respected in law and by a centuries-old tradition of keeping international agreements. DECISION MAKING WOMEN Women working outside the home, at least in urban areas, are becoming more common. Female business managers are most common in the cities; rural areas still cling to conservative ideas. Throughout the country, however, the emphasis still remains on women as homemakers with absolute authority in domestic matters. As Portugal emerges into a democracy, women are slowly acquiring positions of power. They still hold many entry level jobs in businesses, though even this is a step up from a few years ago. Men still remain dominant in much of the culture, though foreign businesswomen should be treated with respect. Street theft can be a problem, and women should be sure to hold handbags tightly, especially in the urban areas.
