Country Flag ... Travel Warning History Up to the Middle Ages, the history of Portugal is inseparable from that of Spain. Present-day Portugal became a part of the Roman province of Lusitania in the 2nd century BC. In the 5th century AD control of the region passed to the Visigoths, and in the 8th century it was included in the area of Moorish Muslim conquest. In 997 the territory between the Douro and Minho rivers (now northern Portugal) was retaken from the Moors by Bermudo II, king of León, and in 1064 the reconquest was completed as far south as present-day Coimbra by Ferdinand I, king of Castile and León. The reconquered districts were then organized into a feudal county, composed of Spanish fiefs.

In 1143 Portugal was raised to the status of a kingdom. Dom Afonso Henriques th century. P ortugal is the westernmost point in Europe. It was from this little country that Prince Henry the Navigator financed expeditions that led to the discovery of the New World. From his School of Navigation in a little town called Sagres , ships departed on their exploration of the boundless seas and the unknown world beyond - Portugal turned to the Ocean, in it defining its destiny. T he Fifteenth Century was Portugal's age of Discovery . First it was Madeira Island, then the Azores, Cape Bojador and Cape Verde. Then the Portuguese explorers reached Africa rounded the Cape of Good Hope giving Portugal it's own route to India. Vasco de Gama reached India, establishing Portuguese colonies, and Pedro Cabral discovered Brazil. Other Portuguese explorers reached the Far East, China and Japan. For that brief moment in time, Portugal was the richest country in Europe. T he Republic of Portugal encompasses mainland Portugal and the islands groups of Madeira and the Azores . The mainland is about 325 miles long and 135 miles wide. T he Azores Madeira is situated about 550 miles southwest of Lisbon and consists of four islands: Madeira, Porto Santo, Selvagens and Desertas. Brief History
. : Brief History Portugal maintained, throughout its history, difficult relationships with its powerful peninsular neighbor Spain, struggling with the expansion of the Plateau (coming from the Iberian Peninsula, emerged since the secondary era, divided through the middle by the Portuguese-Castilian System) and taking to the sea to safeguard its freedom and independence.
Existing since the 12th century as an independent state, the territory that today forms Portugal already possessed in the 10th and 11th centuries, in the area between the Douro and Minho, the sketch of a political organization, economically and socially different from the kingdom of Leon, of which it became autonomous in the course of the reconquest fights against the Moors. The contact with the Atlantic Ocean gave to the Portuguese the knowledge and experience that characterizes maritime peoples, allowing them to preceed the European marine expansion by some decades.
The presence of strong Jewish and Arab communities also guaranteed the necessary scientific teachings towards new discoveries that would begin in the 15th century under the direction of the royal house.
In 1415, the Portuguese took to the sea in an epic trip that would transform them into the first men to discover the marine routes for India, Brazil, China and Japan. The first known result of this time of the Discoveries was the occupation of Porto Santo, Madeira and S. Miguel (Azores), respectively in 1419, 1420 and 1431. The limit of the known Sea, until then, was Cabo Bojador's passage where began the 'Dark Sea' and it was thought at that time, that the human life past that point was impossible. After 15 unsuccessful attempts, Gil Eanes, squire of the Infante D. Henrique, got to transpose this obstacle and to navigate further south. Starting from then, all the remaining years of Portugal expeditions constituted of Caravels (embarkations of three masts and triangular sails). In their countless trips, many were the changes effected, that drove to an enrichment of the country, in a lot of areas, which are still applied today.

From the Golden Age of Discovery to the Inquisition Portugese Jewry went from the heights of wealth and success to the depths of anguish and despair. The history of Portugese Jewry is like that of many other places, where success and sadness go hand in hand. Walking along Marrano communities can still be found practicing Jewish rituals behind closed doors, fear of persecutions still looming.
    Early History
Legends say that Jews first came to the Iberian peninsula during the reign of Nebuchadnezzar in the 6 th century BCE or maybe even beforehand during the reign of King Solomon in 900s BCE. Jews lived and remain active in social and commercial life of the peninsula during the Visigoth and Muslim periods of occupation 5 th th century C.E. Several important Jewish communities were already active when the kingdom of Portugal was founded in the 12 th Tensions arose between the Jewish community, who choose to remain faithful to their religion, and the local clergy and middle/lower classes. The clergy wanted to invoke restrictions of the Lateran Council against the Jews, but King Dinis (1279-1235) resisted and reassured the Jews that they did not have to pay tithes to the church.
