Being a mother is one of the hardest jobs anyone can do, and having a mood disorder can make a hard job feel impossible. Many women experience some form of postpartum mood disorders. This illness is a disease. It is not something you can wish away or slide under a rug. The status of mental health in many societies is still one surrounded by misinformation and stigma.
Just as a diabetic has a problem with how her pancreas functions, so does a person with a mental disorder have a problem with how her brain functions. Hormones, genetics and brain chemistry all play a huge role in the onset of mood disorders. Some people with mental health issues are able to function by monitoring their lifestyle, while others may require medication. Again, this is similar to our diabetic example above, as some diabetics can manage their illness by watching what they eat and how much they exercise, while others require insulin injections.
If you feel that you may be suffering from a postpartum mood disorder, please contact your doctor. Many women find it frightening to seek treatment, or feel a sense of shame at needing help. Remember that the brain is an organ in the brain, just like any other part of your body. Understand that there is no more shame in seeking treatment for a brain disorder than there is when seeking treatment for any other ailment.

Why do women get postpartum depression?
Having a baby can be one of the biggest and happiest events in a woman's life. While life with a new baby can be thrilling and rewarding, it can also be hard and stressful at times. Many physical and emotional changes can happen to a woman when she is pregnant and after she gives birth. These changes can leave new mothers feeling sad, anxious, afraid, or confused. For many women, these feelings (called the baby blues ) go away quickly. But when these feelings do not go away or get worse, a woman may have postpartum depression. This is a serious condition that requires quick treatment from a health care provider.

WCBS Women's Health Series: Post Partum Depression
  • October 9, 2002

(WCBS) (NEW YORK) Treating post partum depression. Postpartum depression by definition happens after a woman gives birth to her baby peaking in most cases at about four months. The signs vary but could include a lack of energy, feeling sad, blue, hopeless, and even suicidal. There can also be sleep related problems. Treatments can vary depending upon the severity of the case. Dr Shari Lusskin, of the New York University Medical Center says, "if its mild, psycho social interventions may be necessary. That is finding someone to help care for the baby, making sure the mom gets adequate sleep, adequate nutrition, perhaps some counseling to discuss the new issues related to being a new parent and a mother." Severe depression can be treated with medication and if the new mom is breast feeding she can take these medicines without fear of hurting her baby.

    Post Partum Depression

    From the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation
"I wasn't sleeping. I wasn't eating. I felt like there was no feeling inside except anxiety. I didn't feel love for this baby; I would sit there nursing and just cry for hours." Shawn "I looked in the bathroom mirror and thought I looked dead. I should be dead! This is my night to die." Tamara "I started thinking about harming the children. I was thinking of drowning them in the bathtub. It was almost a sense of relief that I still had some control in my life." Karen Becoming a new mother is usually a time of joy and celebration. But for many women those feelings are also tinged with sadness or depression. As many as 90% of women may experience the "baby blues" after childbirth; its causes are primarily physical, and it generally goes away without treatment. If it doesn't go away, if crying spells and feelings of hopelessness persist beyond a couple of weeks, the woman may be suffering from postpartum depression, which affects 10-20% of new mothers.
