Within OPA, the Office of Adolescent Pregnancy Programs (OAPP) is responsible for administering the program. The AFL program is funded at $28.9 million in fiscal year 2002. Dr. Patrick Sheeran is the Director, OAPP. The AFL program supports demonstration projects to develop, implement and evaluate program interventions to promote abstinence from sexual activity among adolescents and to provide comprehensive health care, education and social services to pregnant and parenting adolescents. The program supports two basic types of demonstration projects: (1) prevention demonstration projects to develop, test, and use curricula that provide sexuality education designed to encourage adolescents to postpone sexual activity, and (2) care demonstration projects to develop interventions with pregnant and parenting teens, their infants, male partners, and family members in an effort to ameliorate the effects of too-early-childbearing for teen parents, their babies and their families. The AFL program also funds grants to support research on the causes and consequences of adolescent premarital sexual relations, adolescent pregnancy and parenting. To ensure that all AFL project staff at the local level have the necessary skills and training to implement these programs, the OAPP has conducted numerous technical assistance workshops annually since1998 to train front line care and prevention project staff to provide more comprehensive services to their clients.

Outreach Activities
Faculty and staff design, develop, deliver and evaluate human development and family life education programs. These efforts focus on issues related to the quality of child care for all children, children who are at-risk due to poverty and living in dangerous environments, risky behavior in adolescents such as teen pregnancy, substance abuse and school failure and stressful family transitions due to divorce, remarriage, death and other life events. The faculty and staff are interested in developing innovative delivery strategies through the use of information technology as well as developing effective strategies for reaching high-risk children and families that involve collaboration across various organizations and agencies. Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic The Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic serves students, faculty and staff of the University, as well as the greater Columbus community. This clinic provides training for doctoral students enrolled in the marriage and family therapy program while under the direct supervision of MFT clinical faculty. Marriage and family therapy is concerned with the problems and needs of marriage and family relationships. Marriage and family therapists believe that difficulties are best dealt with in the context of these relationships. When it is not possible to have all family members present in therapy sessions, services will be provided to individuals. A. Sophie Rogers Laboratory for Child and Family Studies

Evaluation Updates Research Briefs ... Applied Resources Adolescent Pregnancy Volume 3, Issue 4, Winter 1998 EDITOR'S NOTE Over the past twenty years, teen pregnancy has received increased attention, demonstrated by policy reform, program development, and services for young teen mothers and their children. In this issue, Suzanne Bartholomae and I review the consequences associated with teen pregnancy and the risk factors that could serve as intervention targets. We argue that as practitioners we have the opportunity via intervention to test the adolescent pregnancy models put forth by basic researchers. One such program, "Project Taking Charge," is shared by Jerelyn Schulz. Aspects of the successful development and implementation of this national program are discussed. In addition, Judy Kimberly, Jerry Bean, and Bob Hughes examine the importance and methods of evaluating teen pregnancy prevention programs. Issues discussed include the theory application, target group selection, and community involvement. Laurie L. Meschke, Issue Editor

Four garner 2001 Consumer and Family Science awards
  • Georgia Wagner, a Purdue Extension educator in Wayne County , won the Consumer and Family Services Junior Award for helping low-income families eat healthier meals. She began the program at the behest of the Community Action of East Central Indiana food program director who said clients often were baffled about preparation of nutritious meals. Using U.S. Dietary Guidelines, Wagner provided menus, recipes and food safety tips to program participants. She taught the clients ways to use such Community Action-provided food, such as dried beans and peas, in new and appetizing meals. The Community Action food program director said Wagner also taught the importance of reading nutritional information on labels, which participants said they would use in meal planning.
  • Peggy Davis, a Purdue Extension educator in Clay and Owen counties, won the Consumer and Family Services Senior Award for her innovative development of "Wise Choices for Youth." The grant-funded program focuses on building healthy relationships through the use of communication, conflict management, goal setting, stress and anger management, decision-making and character building. The teen students also learn about human sexuality, including the dangers and consequences of teen pregnancy, and HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. Eighty percent of the 24,853 youths participating during first three years, said information they gained in the program has changed the decisions they will make that will have long-term impact on their lives.
