Preschool (Children's House) Practical Life
Practical life is the area of the classroom where children learn coordination, confidence, cooperation, independence, and order. These activities include care of self, care of the environment, and physical skills. Care-of-self activities include handwashing, snack preparation, and dressing activities. These activities help the young child gain confidence in him/herself. Care-of-the-environment activities can include plant and animal care, as well as cleaning activities. Sweeping, scrubbing, and polishing all help children learn the importance of order. If steps are done incorrectly, the results can be less than desirable.
The area of practical life called "physical skills" incorporates numerous activities. Here children work on pouring, scooping, twisting, lacing, squeezing and pounding just to name a few of the activities. These activities are great for learning coordination skills. The small motor skills are a prerequisite for developing strong capable hands that will be needed for writing activities. The activities in physical skills will vary and meet all abilities and age levels. Let's take a look at "lacing" as one such activity:

WORDS OF WISDOM FOR TEACHERS
Below are some poems and words of wisdom I have collected. Enjoy!
The Hand Holders:
A Tribute To Caregivers
There is no job more important than yours,
no job anywhere else in the land.
You are the keepers of the future;
you hold the smallest of hands.
Into your care you are trusted
to nurture and care for the young,
and for all of your everyday heroics,
your talents and skills go unsung. You wipe tears from the eyes of the injured. You rock babies brand new in your arms. You encourage the shy and unsure child. You make sure they are safe from all harm. You foster the bonds of friendships, letting no child go away mad. You respect and you honour their emotions. You give hugs to each child when they're sad. You have more impact than does a professor, a child's mind is moulded by four; so whatever you lay on the table is whatever the child will explore. Give each child the tools for adventure, let them be artists and writers and more; let them fly on the wind and dance on the stars and build castles of sand on the shore.

All of these activities combine learning values and in the process, learning to take care of our planet. THE IMPORTANCE OF MUSIC IN CHILDREN'S LIVES
By Jean Warren
Whether you are musical or not, you can add the element of music to your child's life. Experts agree that music can strengthen children's minds and serve as a fundamental skill of learning.
Music develops children's sense of patterning and memory skills. Some say music "nourishes children's brains". Music stimulates brain connections and can actually make children smarter.* Listed below are ways you can add music to your child's life.
  • Play a variety of music in the background when your child is playing. Encourage your child to move to the beat of music. Introduce simple instruments to your child such as a play guitar or harmonica. Show your child how to make their own instruments such as simple drums and shakers. Teach your child simple children's songs such as "Eensy, Weensy Spider" and "Mary Had A Little Lamb". Show your child how to keep time to the beat of music through clapping and tapping.

Opposites Big and Small
Let your child help you sort the laundry by size-big socks and small socks, big and small shirts, big and small pants, and so on. Find other things in your home that are big and small.
Up and Down
There are lots of opportunities to teach about up and down throughout the day. When you are climbing stairs, say "Up, up, up" as you walk up the stairs and "Down, down, down" as you walk down the stairs. If you are in a building with an elevator or an escalator, take the time to ride them up and down. Help your child notice that when you are going up, you are getting higher, and that when you are going down, you are getting lower. At the park, your child can climb up the stairs to the top of the slide, then slide down.
In and Out
Place a large plastic hoop (or a length of yarn arranged in a circle) on the floor. Have your child jump in and out of the hoop. Then let your child toss rolled up socks in and out of the hoop.

Dear Visitors
I am a certified early childhood teacher but want to stay home with my children so I am planning to teach a preschool in my home. I have been looking at curriculums trying to find one that I could base off from to add to and adjust but haven't had much luck. I plan to teach two-hour sessions two days a week and plan on having a session for 3-year-olds and one for 4-year-olds. I would appreciate any suggestions of curriculums to look at. I'm not particularly interested in ones that supply all of the materialsthey seem to costly. Especially if I didn't use all of the materials.

I have created this homepage for early childhood educators who use thematic lesson planning. While surfing the web, I found many wonderful early childhood web sites that included thematic units, however, I needed a way to organize the sites so that I could easily find lessons and ideas for each specific theme that I wanted to use. Here it is! To use this site... just scroll through the list of themes and when you find a theme that you are interested in, select a link....it will take you directly to a site about that theme. Happy Planning! I would appreciate any feedback that you have about this site. Please email me at iteach345@aol.com. Thank you!
