II. OVERVIEW
III. SCHOOL-TO-COLLEGE TRANSITION AND RETENTION ...
University of Michigan: Evaluation and Dissemination of an Undergraduate Program to Improve Retention The Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) pairs first- and second-year students with faculty to collaborate on original research projects. Students also participate in an intensive peer advising program, and a series of workshops and other activities. The evaluation of UROP sought to determine its effect on student academic performance and retention to graduation, on students' attitudes towards their intellectual development, and on faculty perceptions of students. The program has had an especially strong positive effect on student retention.
Rollins College: The Science Community YearAddressing Attrition in Science . This project attempts to stem the tide of attrition of students in science. First-year college students take science and math courses along with "master learners," non-science faculty members who are novices themselves and take the courses along with the students. Faculty act much like classroom ethnographers, learning together with students, teaching integrative seminars, and conveying to course instructors a sense of students' problems and frustrations. This feedback has resulted in substantial cur ricular improvements in chemistry, biology and calculus courses. It has been especially successful in doubling the number of declared majors in science among participants.

St. Agnes School Project
Before, I taught intuitively. Now it's grounded in research. It validates my knowledge of student learning, my observations, my planning. If I design strategies based on research, I can move them along faster. I love this research. Victoria Bill, elementary mathematics teacher Victoria Bill began reading research on mathematics education in the summer of 1987the same summer that the AFT/NRCSL collaboration held its first workshop. A team of researchers, led by Lauren Resnick, had been conducting classroom-based experiments at St. Agnes, the inner-city parochial school where Bill taught arithmetic to elementary students. Bill became acquainted with some of the researchers, and eventually Resnick offered her a stipend and a chance to spend her summer reading a body of research on children's informal understandings of arithmetic principles. Bill agreed, interested in the possibility that research might offer antidotes to the difficulties she sometimes had in reaching her low-income, mostly minority students. "I would try anything," she says. The only condition on Bill's arrangement with Resnick was that the two of them meet once a week to discuss Bill's reactions to articles and findings. Resnick, who needed a teacher's clinical insights for a strand of her NRCSL work, hoped they both would benefit from their conversations. She also felt that if she could help Bill apply research to her teaching, it would be a way of repaying St. Agnes for the school's cooperation.

for Ridgely Elementary School
Springfield Public School District 186
Section 1- School Name: Ridgely Elementary School
Section 2- Grade Levels: Preschool through Grade Five
Section 3- Group Submitting Proposal: School Improvement Team at Ridgely
Section 4- Nature of Proposal/Description of Theme:
Ridgely School would like to be known as "Ridgely's Learning Community." The school would like to magnify this theme by extending its arms to embrace the entire Community (i.e. the school population itself, which we hope will grow to be preschool through fifth grade, extended families, the neighborhood, the Ridgely Alumni, and Community businesses). The school building would be available as a Community Center for a variety of activities both educational and social. Section 5- Rationale and Definition of Process:
Strong emphasis for this theme school is placed on the Social Studies Curriculum and the linking of it to the building technology plan. This linking will successfully integrate technology into the classroom curriculum. It is imperative to highlight our intense reading and writing programs, our hands on math program, and our collaborative teaching efforts. Through evaluation of the Language Arts, Mathematics, and Social Studies curriculum, we have found that in these content areas we not only meet but also exceed the standards that have been set by the district and the state. The collaborative teaching model brings our plans, lessons, and staff together.
