MUSIC LESSONS HELP STUDENTS MORE THAN COMPUTER TRAINING
Research shows piano students better equipped to comprehend mathematical and scientific concepts.
Preschoolers were divided into three groups: One group received private piano keyboard lessons and singing lessons. A second group received private computer lessons. The third group received no training. Those children who received piano/keyboard training performed 34% higher on tests measuring spatial-temporal ability than the others — even those who received computer training. " Spatial-temporal” is basically proportional reasoning — ratios, fractions, proportions and thinking in space and time. This concept has long been considered a major obstacle in the teaching of elementary math and science. Reference: Neurological Research February 28, 1997

November 16, 1997 Growing Body of Research Parents are increasingly aware of the growing body of research showing how music instruction can, among other things, help children develop their motor skill, build their self-confidence and increase oral and memory skills, music teachers report.
Yet most parents, the teachers say, also want their children to learn about music for music's sake.
Lynn Rupp of Des Moines, Iowa, enrolled her three children in piano lessons with her childhood teacher - Jan Johnson - because she wanted them to have the same opportunity to learn how to play and appreciate music. But her children have the extra advantage of the Suzuki method, said Rupp, which "seems like a lot more fun" than the more traditional why she learned piano as a child.
Young is quick to not that " traditional teachers" - whose private lessons may involve music from a basic primer that teaches note recognition, basic theory and physical coordination - aren't as traditional as they used to be. Now they often use different techniques to teach children to understand musical concepts as well as how to play music pieces, Young said.
She attributes the strong local demand for private music lessons, in part, to inadequate music training in the public schools.

Des Moines Register Jan Johnson, a veteran piano teacher in Des Moines, has yet to have a parent call and say, "I want my child to learn how to play piano because I want to develop her spatial-temporal reasoning."
But like many music teachers, Johnson is excited about new research on how young children's brains develop. Some of the research suggests that musical training offers benefits for preschool children beyond teaching them how to play and enjoy music.
On study that's getting a lot of attention comes from the University of California in Irvine. Researchers there found that structured piano lessons help preschoolers develop a type of reasoning - called spatial-temporal reasoning - that may help them do well Latin in Math, Science and engineering.
Spatial-temporal reasoning is the ability to reason in space and through time. It's what a person putting together a puzzle uses to envision the picture the pieces will make. It's what a person playing chess uses to anticipate and respond to an opponent's move. It's what and engineer uses when designing a bridge.
When children play the piano, "they're not just playing notes," said Gordon Shaw, co-author of the preschool music study and a professor at the U of C at Irvine's Center for Neurobiology of Learning and Memory. "They're thinking ahead in patterns. Music is a sequence of patterns.

When music instruction is presented in a non threatening, supportive environment, by highly trained facilitators, a child develops the self esteem and confidence necessary to excel in all areas of life. Music lessons are a catalyst for the development of important life skills such as problem solving, self discipline, and goal setting. From academics to sports, children who study music lead the way!

A 1997 study completed by a leading psychologist from the University of Wisconsin and a leading physicist from the University of California reported that preschoolers who received music training, specifically piano/keyboard lessons, performed 43% higher on tests that measured spatial-temporal ability than their peers who did not receive the same training. This ability allows a person to perform at a more superior level in subjects such as math, science and engineering. "The Music Simply Music program was added to our Child Development Center program in the hopes that it would give the children (ages 2-6 years) a positive and fun experience and lay the foundation for musical growth and formal instruction. Our hopes were answered!

Tell us here Music educators have known for decades that we learn music in much the same way we learn language, and by starting at an early age, music becomes a child's "native tongue".Recent studies have demonstrated that music lessons for pre-schoolers can enhance their spatial intelligence, increase math skills, and improve self-esteem. Our programs are designed to not only give children an introduction to music, but also to help parents learn how to raise a musical child. Instructor Tom Kaufmann is now organizing classes for two and three year olds with a parent. Classes are designed to teach the concepts of pitch and rhythm through musical games, song, marching, creative movement , and plenty of hands-on time to explore a variety of instruments. Classes are forty-five minutes, and the cost is $10 per class. Please call for class schedules and starting dates. For four and five year old preschoolers, Tom Kaufmann will be a teaching a series of six classes. In addition to weekly visits to our Instrument Petting Zoo, students will also learn to play a song on a "Tap-A-Tune". This program is designed to be a pre-piano class and will be useful in determining a child's readiness for continued piano study. Classe are one hour, the cost for the six week program is $60. Please call for class schedules and starting dates.
