Send an E-Card THE BENEFITS OF MUSIC LESSONS Music and music appreciation can open the minds and hearts of children by Emma Lee If you could improve your child's ability in math and sciences by enrolling them in extra-curricular lessons that are enjoyable and fun, you would probably would. Normally, you would think to employ the services of a tutor. Well, how about music lessons instead? According to a recent study, music education could significantly improve a child's spatial-reasoning ability, the skill that is necessary for learning math, science, chess and engineering. A research team led by physicist Dr. Gordon Shaw of the University of California at Irvine made this enlightening discovery when they embarked on their two-year experiment with preschoolers. The children who were given piano/keyboard training performed 34% higher on tests measuring spatial-temporal ability than the other children included in the studysome received private computer lessons and some received no lessons.

Send an E-Card SUGGESTED READING of 7 SOUND CHOICES by Wilma Machover (Oxford Univ. Press, l996). This book covers a wide range of topicsfrom choosing a teacher and instrument to motivation and practice. This is a helpful guide for parents who need help sorting out all the options. This book is very comprehensive and addresses the needs of children from preschool through adolescence with considerable depth and insight. THE MOZART EFFECT NURTURED BY LOVE by Shinichi Suzuki (Warner Bros. Publications, 1986). This book brings an inspiring message to parents: Your child is a genius. All children have musical talent, according to Dr. Suzuki, and all children can be musically educated. Suzuki presents his philosophy and methodology in this classic book with anecdotes from his long life dedicated to teaching music to children. Many have called Suzuki the greatest musical educator of the 20th century, and you can catch the flavor of his personality and love for children in this book. SENSORY INTEGRATION AND THE CHILD by Jean Ayres (Western Psychological Services, 1991). This book provides detailed information on how the nervous system develops from utero through adolescence. Here, Ayres explains concepts like "adaptive response," "motor planning," "gravitational security" and many more. This book is revolutionary in showing that the roots of intellect and behavior lie in our sensory system processes.

White Oak School E-Newsletter Can it really be? Summer is over and the new school year has already begun. Do you have grandparents or other family members that would enjoy receiving the e-newsletter? Just send us their e-mail address and we'll put them on the list! GOODBYE SUMMER Our last two weeks of the summer program were a lot of fun, and we managed to finish up several projects and send home piles of art, wrinkled swimsuits, and Notebooks. Still, there was so much we wanted to do that we didn't get done! Summer flies by, and we wonder where all the time went. WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Megan is now teaching 8th grade math and computer science at Cerro Gordo. Andrea and Leisa are still with us, teaching Spanish/Archaeology and Art, respectively. They are seniors this year, and Andrea will graduate in December! Erica is now teaching 3rd grade in Chicago, and Annemarie will also be teaching in the Chicago area. Neeley is now living in the Chicago area and has just accepted an early childhood position there. Beth will still be working part-time in our preschool classroom, but she is also doing her student teaching for her early childhood degree at UI. (Beth got married this summer congratulations, Beth!) Jackie is attending classes at Parkland before transferring to UI to double major in Education and French; she is working in our preschool classroom this semester. To our students who attend only in the summer (Ariel, Matt, Sarah, Emily, and others!), we hope you have a great year and we'll see you next summer!

One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is the love of music. Fortunately it doesn't require expensive lessons and instruments to do this.
Singing, even speaking in a sing-song voice to children is a natural for most parents. Something deep inside us tells us that music elicits joy and happiness and even calms our little ones. Charlotte Diamond, former teacher and now an award-winning children's performer elaborates on how easy it is to bring music into children's lives. "Young children love music and rhythm. Parents can rock their children and sing to them as a part of a regular routine each night before bed. It's not necessary to have a great voice, because children are simply happy to hear their parents voice and how they express themselves."
Whether or not you've studied music formally has nothing to do with sharing music with your child. 'I don't think a parent should ever be concerned about their own weakness musically", says Diamond. "Hearing someone sing with their own voice is great, it's part of who they are and part of their personality."
As for what you should sing to your child, the answer can be found in the songs and lullabies of your own childhood. It's not so much how perfectly sung they are explains Diamond. "What's being communicated is your love for your child, that you'll take care of them and that they are secure."

The Private Observed Lesson
Private lessons are a communal affair with students and parents coming early or staying late to watch and listen to other lessons. This provides great motivation. Lessons vary in length according to the attention span of the child. Review of learned material is an integral part of every private lesson. The Weekly Group Lessons
Group lessons are held weekly to allow children to experience the thrilling sound of playing together. The class emphasizes repertoire from the very earliest "Twinkles" to the most advanced. Children enjoy the music making and the games that teachers use to reinforce skills.
Daily Listening
Suzuki found that listening to the recordings many times at home, they would have memorized the pieces before they began to study them. The learning process is accelerated.
"If you want your children to progress rapidly, increase their listening time. Remember, your child learned to speak by listening to you speak" …...Suzuki.

DANCES WE DANCE
Welcome to the Dances We Dance first edition newsletter on line. I would like to introduce myself. My name is Utta Richardson and I am a Dance Teacher with my own Dance Company, d.b.a. Dances We Dance. I have been going to locally owned daycare centers, small and large, for almost 15 years, teaching dance to children of all ages. I would like to share with you the importance of teaching dance to children. Dance and Music stimulate the children's brain. I have known for a long time how young children benefit from music and dance, and recent studies now show what I have seen first hand over the years. We do not necessarily associate math with dance and music, but think about this, a structured dance is a set of patterns, usually 4, 6 or 8 counts. In dance this is used for marching, (counting 1-2) turning around in place in 4 counts while taking the appropriate 4 steps, (rather than spinning around on one foot), and it takes concentrated listening for the little ones to do this. In addition, clapping to a pattern while listening to the rhythm of music like for example 4 "short" quick claps and 2 "big" or slow claps involves math, listening and concentration. This article by Marilyn Elias appeared in USA TODAY.

The Preparatory Division offers two different courses of study for the pre-school-age child: The SUZUKI METHOD , which offers private lessons in piano, flute, cello, recorder or violin, emphasizing aural development and sensitivity and the KIDS KEYBOARD COLLEGE (KKC) , which teaches children basic musicianship skills, ear training and introduces keyboard playing. Both of these methods share a similar philosophy in teaching the preschool student to develop the whole child, to help unfold the child's natural potential to learn, to encourage self-discipline and concentration, and to promote a lasting enjoyment of music. A special Parent Orientation/Open House is held prior to the beginning of each semester. Parents considering enrollment in KKC or Suzuki should attend the meeting to become familiar with the goals and techniques of these methods. We will be happy to answer your questions and assist you in choosing the better program for your child. Registrations will be accepted at that time.

the Kodaly Method
The Kodaly Music for Children program presents joyful music games and activities involving moving, singing playing percussion instruments creating, listening and "hearing music in their heads". Through a carefully sequenced series of steps children moved from just playing the game into an exploration of the musical features of the song. They develop musical understandings and most importantly a 'musical ear' which, together, lead to a sound level of aural musician ship. The school aged classes apply their musical ear and musical understanding to the reading and writing of music. They learn to sing what they read and write what they hear. This program prepares children admirably for instrumental studies. Telephone now to ensure your place (02) 4721 5423 Top of page A Parent
