Now We Know What We've Always Suspected:
Music is Important for Young Children!
By Deborah Pratt, M.A.

Why Is Music So Important for Preschoolers?

Music is a valuable activity that contributes immensely to the development of a child. Here is some of the research that shows why, presented as it has unfolded over the last 15 years. Gordon Shaw and fellow researchers present a new model of the brain's neuronal structure.
Experiments in which musicians perform mental rehearsals of music indicate that music and other creative skills, such as mathematics and chess, may involve extremely precise firing patterns by billions of brain neurons (Leslie Brothers and Gordon Shaw in Models of Brain Function, edited by R. Cotterdill.)
Gordon Shaw and a fellow researcher propose that music may be considered a "prelanguage" and that early music training may be useful in "exercising" the brain for certain higher cognitive functions. (Concepts in Neuroscience, Vol 2, No. 2, P. 229-258)
At risk children who participated in an arts program that included music showed significant increases in overall self-concept. (N.H. Barry, Auburn University, 1992)

Piano Lessons A student may begin piano lessons as early as 5 years of age. Through the vast variety of piano methods available today, it is usual for a beginning student to be able to play one or two songs after their first lesson. The emphasis at Kathy's Music Box is on the students having fun with music whilst developing sound technical skills. Students are encouraged to participate in recitals at the studio each term and also at the Christmas and Year End concerts, held at Brechin United Church, Nanaimo. Students may also prepare for Royal Conservatory examinations and music festivals if they wish.

The Mozart Effect for Children: Awakening Your Child's Mind, Health, and Creativity With Music

Nurtured by Love: The Classical Approach to Talent Education by Shinichi Suzuki To Learn With Love : A Companion for Suzuki Parents Related Articles Mozart Effect - many links to online resources on Music/Brain Research. Parents, Young Children and Music Practice by Catherine Shefski If your house is anything like mine, getting your child to sit down to practice piano is no easy task. Playing the piano should be fun. I know many teachers will disagree and say that practicing requires diligence and discipline. With twenty years of piano study behind me, I do know about discipline and the dedication. However, when we are talking about young children, we must keep in mind that we are laying the groundwork for a lifetime of music enjoyment. We've all heard our children singing while they play, humming to themselves, or chanting nursery rhymes. They seem to be so naturally musical. As parents, we get excited and quickly enroll our children in piano lessons. Unfortunately for many of us, our child's enthusiasm begins to fizzle out and soon we are both dreading the daily practice session. This causes problems for the teacher during the lesson, frustration for the child, and eventually, the end of the piano lessons.

ECE Teaching Tips
The following teaching tips have been submitted by kinderart visitors. Use them to help you in your home or school classrooms...
  • With young children it is the process, and not the product that counts.
  • Art is a time for exploration for young children. Do not be surprised if that cutting project you begin ends up with lots of little snips of paper (Remember it's the process, not the product!).
  • Let the child glue snips of paper down or put them in an envelope to take home. Some may opt to throw them away.
  • The following objects make great paint brushes:
    • sticks
    • old sanitized tooth brushes (Just soak them in bleach)
    • Q-tips
    • pipe cleaners
    • wire bread ties
    • the eraser end of pencils
    • fingers, etc.
  • Find a good salt dough recipe and use it frequently. Molding the dough helps build fine muscles in the fingers and hands.
