In other parts of New York State, children who attend kindergarten or a grade level higher than kindergarten are not counted if they are in the legal custody of or boarded out with the care provider. There are generally four types of child care services offered for preschool aged children: 1) Informal Care 2) Family Day Care Homes 3) Group Family Day Care Homes 4) Day Care Centers (Day Care Centers may also offer special services such as "night care" or "infant care.") The difference between the four types of centers is based on the number of children receiving care and whether the care is provided in a personal residence or commercial location. A commercial location is any place other than a personal residence. This includes employer, or university-sponsored day care programs.
