Primate research in southern Mexico Alejandro Estrada Ph.D Laboratory of Primatology, Estación de Biología "Los Tuxtlas", Instituto de Biología Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México General background The tropical rain forests Tropical rain forests occupy only between 6-10% of the surface of the Earth, but harbor between 50-80% of existing plant and animal species. Of these only between 10-20% have been descvribed at the species level. The number of species for which we have precise knowledge regarding basic aspects of their biology and ecology is significantly smaller. These ecosystems are also an important source of climatic stability and of many resources used by man, ranging from food to pharmaceutical and industrial products. However, everyday about 20,000 ha of tropical rain forest vanished from the face of the Earth as a result of human activity . Such destruction results in the daily local and regional extinction of numerous species. In Latin América, as in the rest of the world, tropical rain forests have been subjected, in the last 50 years, to a rapid process of destruction and fragmentation resulting from land management practices in conflict with a rational use of the resources present in these forests. Coupled to these events, the accelareted growth of human populations and the pressing demand for space and food also contribute to the rapid disappearance of these ecosyustems in the American continent.

45. Biological Anthropology - General Information For MST Students
This course explores the biological heritage of humans and the evolutionary, functional and behavioural character of the primates.
http://www.bioanth.cam.ac.uk/mst-full.html
FULL PART II in BIOLOGICAL ANTHROPOLOGY Part II consists of three main courses and project work. The examination consists of written papers on the three courses (each paper counts for 20% of the total marks), plus a practical examination. Students are also required to keep practical notebooks which are assessed as part of the practical examination (notebook + practical examination = 20% of the total marks). The project work contributes the remaining 20% of the Tripos marks. 1. Human Genetics and Variation (Paper 1) (Tuesday and Thursday 9:00)
  • This paper surveys human genetics and population diversity, with particular emphasis on the possible selective factors underlying genetic variation in man.
  • Topics covered include serological polymorphisms, molecular genetics and polygenic traits, e.g. stature and I.Q. in human populations.
  • The interactions between genetic and environmental factors influencing phenotypic variation are considered, and various aspects of medical genetics, including counselling, and the genetic components of human disease.

  • Unique in bringing an interdisciplinary approach to one of the most exciting areas of current behavioural science research.
  • Contains papers by distinguished researchers from Europe and the United States at the forefront of their respective disciplines.
The 14 contributions testify to the increasing co-operation which is bringing together biologists, primatologists, archaeologists, psychologists, linguists and anthropologists who share a common interest in the study of social and cultural behaviour from an evolutionary perspective. The papers range in topic from cultural and social behaviour among non-human primates, through the interaction of cognitive development with social organization during the Upper Palaeolithic, to behaviour (including linguistic behaviour) among modern humans.

Physical Anthropology and Archaeology
Spring Semester 2002
Sophia University Prof. Charles T. Keally
Department of Comparative Culture Anth 205 is an introductory course to the broad fields of Physical Anthropology and Archaeology. It is also a course intended primarily for 2nd-year college students. Consequently, this study guide is thorough it contains almost all of the questions that will appear on the quizzes and examinations. However, there is not an excessive amount of material in this guide for each chapter, or for the whole course. Therefore, there is no excuse for any student getting less than a C+ (75%) on any of the quizzes or examinations; most students should get grades between A- and B.

BIBLIOGRAPHY OF GENERAL WORKS IN MAMMALOGY
This bibliography is designed to guide beginning students in mammalogy to literature in specific areas. The works included are primarily monographic and of wide coverage. It is also a work in progress; I add new works and update editions when any such come to my attention. Note: This list has been compiled by scouring through curatorial offices and the library in the Department of Mammalogy at the American Museum of Natural History. It has been updated by perusing the new main library books borrowed by curators. I note the Museum's call number or the Library of Congress number on the back of the title page; these are not always the same, and I prefer the Museum Library's number. Several titles are taken from publisher's fliers and Choice cards; the pagination is not always correct for books that are yet to be issued, and they usually end in suspiciously round numbers. To recommend inclusion of additional works or to correct listings, please notify John H. Wahlert

    55. ASP - Ethical Treatment Of Non-human Primates
in a number of research disciplines, we accept the general applicability of completelythe special considerations that apply to working with nonhuman primates.
    http://www.asp.org/society/resolutions/EthicalTreatmentOfNonHumanPrimates.html
The following guidelines were formulated by the ASP Research and Development Committee, for the purpose of providing a public document regarding ASP standards for the use of nonhuman primates in research. The Board of Directors officially approved this policy statement in its present form on October 2, 2001. The finalized guidelines may be used by the AJP Editor when ethical considerations are an issue.
Principles for the Ethical Treatment of Non-Human Primates
The stated purposes of the American Society of Primatologists (ASP) are exclusively educational and scientific; specifically, to promote and encourage the discovery and exchange of information regarding primates, including all aspects of their anatomy, behavior, development, ecology, evolution, genetics, nutrition, physiology, reproduction, systematics, conservation, husbandry, and use in biomedical research. The Society is organized around an interest in primates rather than a specific discipline; ASP members abide by specific guidelines for the use of animals developed by discipline-based organizations such as the American Psychological Association , American Society of Mammalogists , Animal Behavior Society and the Society for Neuroscience . Because ASP members are grounded in a number of research disciplines, we accept the general applicability of these guidelines to primatological research, however specific recommendations developed by these societies may not address completely the special considerations that apply to working with nonhuman primates. Despite their varied disciplines, ASP members hold the following general principles in common:

University of Arizona - Tucson CLASSIFICATION OF NONHUMAN PRIMATES (see Table 1 Nonhuman primates are classified into four major categories: PROSIMIANS, NEW WORLD MONKEYS ( Platyrrhiny ), OLD WORLD MONKEYS ( Catarrhina ), and APES ( Hominoidea ). The true prosimians are primitive primates far removed from human stock and are found in arboreal habitats. The Lemuriformes of Madagascar are classified as endangered species and trade in them is not permitted. So far, no particular uses for them in medical research have been found. The new world monkeys (NWM) comprise two families the Callitrichidae (marmosets and tamarinds) and Cebidae, the members of which vary greatly in size, diet, habits, and color. They are more distantly related to man than the old world primates and may for this reason be a less reliable model for medical studies. Only five groups are in regular use in laboratories: 1. Marmosets and tamarins (

Attendance and participation will not be graded directly, but grades that are on the border could be helped by active engagement in class. Assigned reading should be done before the date for which it is assigned. This will enable students to participate in class discussion. Also note the critical thinking questions for each day, as these will cover in-class discussion topics and could show up on a quiz. There will be short, weekly quizzes, a midterm, a paper, and a final. Point totals are broken down as follows: 9 Quizzes = 25% (one drop quiz)
    1 Midterm = 25%
    1 Paper = 25%
    1 Final = 25%
Weekly quizzes will be short and will cover material either presented in class (lecture, slides, video, etc.) or from the homework reading. There will be one drop quiz. Both the midterm and the final will include multiple choice and short-answer questions, and the final will also include one or two longer essays. The paper assignment will be a short 5- to 8-page essay on one of two topics which will be announced later in the semester. Course Outline: Introduction May 20
