University of Alberta Devonian Botanic Garden Plantwatch Canada Plantwatch: List of Provincial Coordinators Ecological Monitoring and Assessment Network (EMAN) the first meeting of regional coordinators for Canada Plantwatch was held May 2000 in Ottawa! Almost all provinces and territories were represented. Some of the provinces already had surveys running (Alberta, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador) and some start ed up last spring (British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Prince Edward Island, Nunavut, Northwest Territories and Yukon). Canadians, see below for information on how to contact your provincial or territorial coordinators. Chapter 5: Prince Edward Island Structure of the Judicial System Judicature Superior Courts The Prince Edward Island Supreme Court Act establishes a superior court of record called the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island . That Court is composed of two divisions: the Appeal Division , which sits in Charlottetown, and the Trial Division , which sits in Georgetown, Charlottetown and Summerside. Newfoundland Geography Climate Newfoundland's climate can best be described as moderate and maritime. The island enjoys winters that are surprisingly mild by Canadian standards, though with a high rate of precipitation. Labrador, by comparison, has the cold winters and brief summers characteristic of the Canadian mid-North. The winter in Newfoundland is very cold and summer is mild. Waterproof clothing is worn throughout the year. Culture The province's present population of approximately 574,000 is largely descended from settlers from southwestern England and southern Ireland who immigrated to Newfoundland in the late 1700s and early 1800s. The pattern of settlement was determined by the fishing industry, a population distribution that has persisted to this day. The Avalon Peninsula and northeastern Newfoundland, the traditional base for the fisheries, are the most heavily populated areas. Industry Newfoundland and Labrador are highly dependent on the resource sector. The province was initially settled because of its rich fishing grounds on the Grand Banks. The mainstay of the province's fishing industry has been groundfish (primarily cod); however, other important catches are flounder, redfish, capelin, shrimp and crab. The second facet of the provincial economy is mining. This industry ships mineral products valued at approximately $700 million a year, mostly iron ore from Labrador. Other minerals mined in the province are gold, asbestos, lime stone and gypsum. In 1994, a major discovery of nickel, copper and cobalt was made at Voisey Bay and a significant development project is now under way.

I am a geography graduate of St John's College, Cambridge and went on to Leicester to take my PhD. I came to Queen's in 1976 as a lecturer, and am now a Senior Lecturer. I am a human geographer with interests in settlement, including historical settlements. At present I am course co-ordinator for our Level 1 Human Geography course (210GGY105) and give a Level 3 course entitled 'Aspects of urban development' (210GGY307). I have researched extensively on Ireland and have been President of the Geographical Society of Ireland and the Ulster Society for Irish Historical Studies. I represent Ireland on the Council of British Geography and also serve on the (Irish) National Committee for Geography. I have taught in both Canada and the USA and this interest is reflected in my jointly edited book, North America, and in my being Co-Director of Queen's University's Centre of Canadian Studies, which is housed in the School of Geography.
