Shows New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and New Foundland. A handsome early map detailing cities, towns, rivers and landforms. Lower and side margins skillfully replaced to provide for framing. (Sold) Colored by province. About by 12 3/4 by 16. A handsome well detailed map with a decorative border showing Russian Alaska, Danish Greenland and British America (Canada). Alaska is clearly not yet well mapped internally as much is speculative. Similar for Greenland where even much of the coastline is also speculative. Canada is divided into provinces and by comparison is well detailed. Attractive. Augustus Mitchell, c.1860, Quebec. Colored, about 10 1/2 by 13 inches. Handsome county map of East Canada. Has an interesting inset of the Environs of Montreal. Excellent detail of counties, cities, towns and landforms. Mitchell's maps are some of the more attractive maps from this period, enhanced with a decorative border. Different editions have slightly different borders. Augustus Mitchell, c.1860, Map of Ontario.

Tourism Information
Smooth Cycle is located at the corner of Kent and Prince Streets in the downtown core of Charlottetown. Look for the bright yellow bike hanging over the door.
For expanded itinerary, ask for the "P.E.I. Cycling Guide" ($14.95 CDN + Shipping and taxes). The guide is the most detailed book available for touring cyclists. A map of the Islands hiking/cycling trails is also available, which includes hot spots for cycling, hiking, viewing wildlife and birding.
The Island is accessible by car or bike via two routes - Northumberland Ferries, connecting Caribou, Nova Scotia, with Wood Islands, P.E.I.; and the Confederation Bridge connecting New Brunswick and P.E.I. No bicycles are allowed on the bridge so a shuttle service is provided. When you arrive on the Island, it is advisable to check in at the Visitor Information Centres located across the province. Here you may obtain up-to-date tourist information.
The Island consists of many short, undulating hills, none of which should present a serious problem if you are in reasonable condition and have a good mountain/tour bike. Wind is a big factor, generally blowing from West and Northwest, particularly in the afternoon. With some planning, you can go out in the morning and return in the afternoon with the wind to your advantage. Bring clothing for sun and rain. Average temperatures in late May and June range from 10 to 20 Celsius; July and August range from 22 to 28 Celsius; September and early October 10 to 20 Celsius.

Prince Edward Island is history. Our past includes the sea in all ways. The first permanent inhabitants were the Mi'k Maq people, a community that called the Island Abegweit interpreted as cradled on the waves. Centuries after their settlement, the first recorded European visit was by the French explorer Jacques Cartier in 1534. In 1719 the first permanent settlement was established. Many descendants of the early French and Acadian communities reside here today. In 1758 the British captured the Island and deported most of the French-speaking population. Under British control, the Island began the settlement process in earnest. It was boosted by the arrival of United Empire Loyalists after the American War of Independance. The Island progressed through to the 1860's to where our capital hosted the Charlottetown Conference , which is recognized as the meeting that brought Canada together as a nation. Today, the birthplace of Canada may visited at Province House in Charlottetown. Prince Edward Island did not join Canada immediately, but entered Confederation in 1873. Through an Island native, the Island became very well-known world-wide. Ludy Maud Montgomery wrote the world-famous

many of the Dutch settlers (the Boers) trekked north to found their own

Prince Edward Island, Canada
Welcomes you
The province of Prince Edward Island, also known as PEI, is Canada’s smallest province and situated in the Gulf of St. Lawrence on Canada's east coast. Prince Edward Island is separated from mainland Canada, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, by the Northumberland Strait. The Island, as many call PEI, is a pastoral, peaceful and beautiful place with old-country flavour, not much different than it was described in the novel Anne of Green Gables written by Lucy Maud Montgomery almost one century ago.
Although you would never guess this, Prince Edward Island is the most densely populated province of Canada. However, towns of PEI aren’t big at all and the romantic island is always good for a lazy vacation.
Prince Edward Island in Figures
Prince Edward Island has a population of 135,294 people (Census 2001).
PEI is 224 km (140 mi) long and 6 to 64 km (4 to 40 mi) wide.
Prince Edward Island covers an area of 5,660 sq km (2,184 sq mi).
No place on the Island is more than 16 km (10 mi) from the sea.
The highest elevation of PEI is with 152 m above sea level (466 feet) located at Springton.

There are two ways to reach the Magdelen Islands: by air or by ferry. Flights arrive directly from a few Canadian cities (e.g. Montreal, Quebec City); this can be included in your global itinerary. IF YOU HAVE NOT YET STARTED LOOKING INTO TRAVEL TO AND FROM THE WORKSHOP, WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO SO AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. July is high season and many good, cheap flights may already be booked, especially from overseas. Plan to arrive on the Islands (Les Iles de la Madeleine, Quebec province, Canada) no later than Sunday evening, July 9th, 2000, and plan to leave no earlier than Saturday morning, July 15th, 2000. The meeting will take place from July 10 -14, with final banquet on the last evening (Friday, July 14th) and a half-day free-time outing of your choice on Wednesday PM July 12th. If you would like some help with arranging your travels to and from the meeting as well as local tourism, try Gordon MacQueen on neighbouring Prince Edward Island, at: MacQueen's Bike and Travel

Joel Garreau: Edge Cities and the Nine Nations of North America
By Nina Brown
Background Garreau, Joel (1948-) Joel Garreau, a journalist for the Washington Post , is the author of two popular books: Edge City: Life on the New Frontier (1991) and The Nine Nations of North America (1981). These books, based on observations Garreau made while traveling throughout North America as a journalist, analyze the social and political forces Garreau believes are transforming the geography of contemporary American communities. His ideas have found a ready audience in both academic and nonacademic settings. Both books are fixtures in college classes in anthropology, geography, demography, and urban planning. In addition to writing for the Washington Post , Garreau is senior fellow at the School of Public Policy at George Mason University. Innovation In his first book, The Nine Nations of North America

Acadian History Acadian Genealogy Cajun History Cajun Genealogy ... Links Exile Destination: Origins Acadia The Exile Resettlement ... Cajun History The first Acadians to reach St. Pierre and Miquelon came from Cape Breton in 1758. After the Treaty of Paris in 1763, the Acadians were told that they had 18 months to relocate to French soil. The French govermnent recognized that St. Pierre and Miquelon would soon be faced with new settlers. In order to keep things under contral, they agreed to support only 300 Acadians. The new governor (Dangeac) and the 300 sailed from Rochefort on the Garonne and arrived in 1763. The governor also supplied the legitimate settlers with fishing equipment. But they were soon joined by others.
Since St. Pierre and Miquelon were the last French colonies left in North America after the treaty, hundreds of Acadians sailed there from Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New England. From 1763 to 1767, other Acadians came from French Atlantic cities. But the small islands didn’t have the resources to support them all, especially as farmers.
In October 1763, 116 Acadians arrived from Boston. They were followed in August of 1764, by 100 Acadians (from Cape Breton Island, Prince Edward Island, the Isthmus of Chignecto, and Chedabouctou) who had been imprisoned in Nova Scotian forts before sailing to Miquelon. In October of 1765, 111 Acadians from Prince Edward Island and Halifax also migrated to Miquelon. That same month, 72 Acadians from Beausejour made it to the islands. Acadians (about 50) on a French fishing fleet jumped ship at St. Pierre at about the same time.
