Prince Edward Island The freckly face and pert pigtails of Anne of Green Gables are emblazoned on much of PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND Charlottetown , the capital and only significant settlement, sits on the south coast beside one of these inlets, the tree-lined streets of the older part of town occupying a chunky headland that juts out into a wide and sheltered harbour. With its graceful air, wide range of accommodation, and good restaurants, this is easily the best base for exploring the island, especially as almost all of PEI's villages are formless affairs whose dwellings ribbon the island's roads. One exception is Victoria , a tiny old seaport southwest of Charlottetown, which makes a peaceful overnight stay. Otherwise, Orwell Corner Historic Village , just to the east of the capital, is an agreeable attempt to re-create an island village as of 1890; Cavendish , on the north coast, boasts the house that Montgomery used as the setting for her books; and, close by, Prince Edward Island National Park , the island's busiest tourist attraction, has kilometres of magnificent sandy beach. Further east is the rough-and-ready township of

A real duke came to the city of Arkhangelsk
Prince Edward, Duke of Kent intends to honour by the memory of the British Empire citizens buried in Vologodskoye cemetery in Arkhangelsk. The aircraft of the Royal Air Forces arrived in Talagi airport just from British capital. The Duke of Kent will honour by the memory of his compatriots in the cemetery and lay a wreath by the eternal fire in the quay of Severnaya Dvina River. The visit of the Royal Family member to the Seaboard is very short. Already this afternoon, his Highness’ aircraft (which is on the list of the Royal Armed Forces) will depart for the city of Murmansk.
The duke of Kent is 67 year old, he is the prince Michel of Kent older brother and Queen Elizabeth’s cousin. He is former officer, who retired in 1976. The duke is patron of many public organizations, including the President Commission on Military Burial Places of the British Commonwealth. In 1976-2001 he was vice-president of British Standing Committee of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, and he is said to have done much on this field, including furthering British trade interests in Russia. The Duke of Kent likes opera very much and takes a great interest in photography, moreover, he likes sports – sky and rowing. Prince Edward is married, he has two sons and a daughter.
In Arkhangelsk, there are about one hundred of English citizens’ graves, most of them appeared in 1918-1919, during the Antanta intervention. Great Britain apportions big sums for supporting the graves, so the Duke’s visit is a kind of inspection.

After the British seized the Cape of Good Hope area in 1806, many of the Dutch settlers (the Boers) trekked north to found their own republics. The discovery of diamonds (1867) and gold (1886) spurred wealth and immigration and intensified the subjugation of the native inhabitants. The Boers resisted British encroachments, but were defeated in the Boer War (1899-1902). The resulting Union of South Africa operated under a policy of apartheid - the separate development of the races. The 1990s brought an end to apartheid politically and ushered in black majority rule.

THE ATLANTIC BEACH GUARDIAN PROGRAM IN PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE PIPING PLOVER, THE COMMON TERN AND THE ST. LAWRENCE ASTER SPECIES AT RISK: The Piping Plover The Piping Plover is listed as an endangered species by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC). These small shorebirds arrive in their breeding grounds in April or May, nesting along sandbars, coastlines, and lake shores. About one-quarter of Canada's Piping Plovers are found in Atlantic Canada; most others are in the Prairies. Regardless of their location, their numbers have been declining. The biggest single reason for that drop is the loss of habitat and most of that loss is caused by human disturbances around nesting sites. Those disturbances range from building activities to the recreational use of beaches. Piping Plovers also are vulnerable to attacks by pets such as dogs and cats, crows, seagulls, and raccoons which are drawn to the area by litter left by picnickers or other beach users.

(Works, Services and Transportation) Fogo Island/Change Islands ferry named after Captain Winsor Works, Services and Transportation Minister Lloyd Matthews today took part in a reception to officially re-name the former "MV Prince Edward" after the late Captain Earl W. Winsor, a veteran seaman and longserving MHA in the legislature. The ferry was purchased last year for the Fogo Island and Change Islands service. "The Captain Earl W. Winsor is a welcome addition to the province's fleet of marine vessels," said Minister Matthews. "Our commitment to improving marine services is apparent in the acquisition of this vessel, in the extensive refit and in all of the infrastructure improvements planned for docking facilities in our communities," he added. "I am pleased today to name this fine vessel in honour of the late Captain Earl W. Winsor," said the minister. "Captain Winsor served the people of Newfoundland and Labrador in the House of Assembly for 23 years. He was elected to the legislature seven times before retiring in 1979. He worked tirelessly for the people he represented, first in Labrador and later for the district of Fogo. Captain Winsor was also an avid seaman and coastal skipper who served in the merchant navy during the Second World War. Throughout his distinguished and varied career he earned the respect of his peers for his sincerity, dedication and commitment. He remained active in the community through membership on various organizations until his death in 1989. It gives me great pleasure to honour Captain Winsor's longstanding commitment to the people of the province in this way."

FitzPatrick Institute helps monitor seabird slaughter
Recently introduced "environmentally friendly" longline fishing is not proving quite so friendly for seabirds whose encounters with these lines often result in their deaths. Fishing with longlines is an environmentally friendly alternative to drift-nets or trawling. When using longlines fishermen dump the weighted lines, up to 100km long with 20 000 hooks, over the back of the boat. Although longlines limit the extent of the bycatch of non-target fish species, and are politically attractive in South Africa because they often require less capital to set up, environmental agencies are concerned about the deaths of large numbers of seabirds. Particular concern has been raised for the wandering albatross which scientists estimate loses as much as 10% of its population to longlines per annum. Staff and students of UCT's FitzPatrick Institute are working with conservation agencies on a number of projects to monitor the extent of the problem, and to educate the public, government departments and the fishing industry about how to limit the slaughter of seabirds. The Institute's involvement began after a Masters project on South Africa's newly-opened hake longline fishery, completed by UCT student Mr Keith Barnes, alerted authorities to the fact that longlines were killing large numbers of whitechinned petrels.

Subantarctic Fur Seal
(Arctocephalus tropicalis) Distribution and Numbers
The breeding colonies of the Subantarctic fur seal, formerly known as the Amsterdam Island fur seal, are generally found on temperate islands in the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans, north of the Antarctic Polar Front. The largest colonies occur at Gough, Amsterdam and the Prince Edward Islands. Colonies have also recently been established at Tristan da Cunha, St Paul, Îles Crozet and Macquarie Islands. Wandering individuals, mostly young males, have been sighted as far north as Brazil, Angola, the Juan Fernández Islands and the Comoro Islands, while individuals are also occasionally seen in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. At least 80,000 pups are born annually, giving a world-wide population of between 277,000 and 356,000.
Photo: Miguel Iñíguez,
Fundacion Cethus Status
The species was hunted almost to extinction in the 19th century for its fur, and some island colonies were totally wiped out. Small-scale killing for fishing bait and skins took place at Gough Island until the 1950s. All of the colonies are now protected by legislation. Since being afforded protection, Subantarctic fur seals have started to colonise new locations and most populations now show growth rates of 13-15% or more. The Subantarctic fur seal is listed as an Appendix II species under CITES. There appear to be no major threats currently facing the species.
