Acadian History Acadian Genealogy Cajun History Cajun Genealogy ... Links Exile Destination: Origins Acadia The Exile Resettlement ... Cajun History The first Acadians to reach St. Pierre and Miquelon came from Cape Breton in 1758. After the Treaty of Paris in 1763, the Acadians were told that they had 18 months to relocate to French soil. The French govermnent recognized that St. Pierre and Miquelon would soon be faced with new settlers. In order to keep things under contral, they agreed to support only 300 Acadians. The new governor (Dangeac) and the 300 sailed from Rochefort on the Garonne and arrived in 1763. The governor also supplied the legitimate settlers with fishing equipment. But they were soon joined by others.
Since St. Pierre and Miquelon were the last French colonies left in North America after the treaty, hundreds of Acadians sailed there from Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New England. From 1763 to 1767, other Acadians came from French Atlantic cities. But the small islands didn’t have the resources to support them all, especially as farmers.
In October 1763, 116 Acadians arrived from Boston. They were followed in August of 1764, by 100 Acadians (from Cape Breton Island, Prince Edward Island, the Isthmus of Chignecto, and Chedabouctou) who had been imprisoned in Nova Scotian forts before sailing to Miquelon. In October of 1765, 111 Acadians from Prince Edward Island and Halifax also migrated to Miquelon. That same month, 72 Acadians from Beausejour made it to the islands. Acadians (about 50) on a French fishing fleet jumped ship at St. Pierre at about the same time.

Government of Canada Funds Three Literacy Projects in Prince Edward Island
CHARLOTTETOWN, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND -Strong literacy skills play an important role in today's knowledge-based economy. In recognition of this, Mr. Shawn Murphy, Member of Parliament for Hillsborough, on behalf of the Honourable Jane Stewart, Minister of Human Resources Development Canada, today announced funding of $80,480 through the National Literacy Secretariat for three projects in Prince Edward Island. This funding supports the Tough Challenges: Great Rewards Implementation Committee in two projects entitled Public Awareness and Outreach Initiative and Priorities for Success, and Project L.O.V.E. in one project entitled Cultivating New Volunteers for L.O.V.E. "Now more than ever people need literacy skills to be productive workers and to participate fully in Canadian society," said Mr. Murphy. "Working in partnership with community organizations is one way the Government of Canada is demonstrating its commitment to help promote and develop literacy throughout P.E.I. and across Canada." Literacy skills are linked to work skills, health and self-esteem. Higher literacy skills among Canadians enable them to participate more fully in our economy and our society. The Government of Canada is committed to supporting action on literacy as part of its goal of removing barriers to full participation by all Canadians. It supports initiatives that promote Canadian competitiveness in a knowledge-based economy.

Tourism
The County of Prince Edward, Quinte's Isle, is located just below Belleville, about an hours drive from Kingston. This picturesque area has the culture, sophistication and amenities, usually associated with a large urban center, yet it is very much a quaint rural area, with all the charms that are associated with county living. This unusual mix makes for a very interesting place to visit, explore and in which to live. You can reach the area by car, bus or rail. If you flying in for a visit, Toronto's Pearson is the nearest international airport. You can then choose to drive Prince Edward or take advantage of the commuter flights available from Air Ontario to reach Kingston. Other alternatives are to fly into Montreal or Ottawa, both of which have international airports. . If your driving from Montreal take the 20 west (or the 40 west, then the 540 south to pick up the 20). Just above Napanee take exit 566 then follow the 49 south. From Ottawa take the 416 south to Prescott, then head west and pick up the 49 south as above. From Toronto take the 401 east and take the 33 south from Trenton, exit 522. If your driving from the U.S. cross the international bridge north of Saracuse near Alexandria and pick up the 401 west or if your coming from the western region of New York, head west at Buffalo to one of the border crossings in the Niagara area and take the QEW to the 427 north then pick up the 401 eastbound. .

About the IGA History The IGA Executive Member Islands ... Contact Us © IGA PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND LOCATION AND COMMUNICATION LINKS Prince Edward Island has the distinction of being the smallest political unit in one of the world’s largest countries, Canada. "The Island," as it is known affectionately by its inhabitants, is situated in the Gulf of St. Lawrence off the Atlantic coast of North America. At 46° North latitude, it is about half-way between the Equator and the North Pole. Despite its location some 15km from the nearest point on the adjacent mainland, Prince Edward Island will soon be connected by "the Fixed Link," a bridge, due to open in 1997, a prospect welcomed by half of the inhabitants and viewed with misgivings by the rest. In the meantime, there is a year-round ferry service, as well as excellent air links through the modern airport at Charlottetown. GEOGRAPHY First-time visitors to Prince Edward Island are often struck by the vivid red of the soil and the beauty of the gently rolling landscape, much of it under cultivation in potatoes and grain. Because of this rather intense agricultural activity, the island has come to be called the ‘Garden of the Gulf’. The typical red is caused by the high content of oxidized iron (rust!) in the island sandstone, itself part of a great plain of sedimentary rocks, formed in Permo Carboniferous times and now mostly submerged under the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Oddly enough, the island did not exist as a distinct geographical entity until about 5,000 years ago, when rising waters eroded away the last of the land bridge to the continent.
