Welcome to an interactive introduction to the art of printmaking. Since its inception, printmaking has allowed people easily to produce multiple copies of a single image. This concept of multiplicity has been applied to commercial markets such as advertising or book publication but has been used for the spread of artistic works. Technology has affected the art of printmaking as much as it has affected the communication of textual information, as in this interactive guide. Along with the technological developments in printmaking, modern ideas of artistic expression and production have also changed the way the medium is approached, even when traditional techniques are employed. This guide focuses on the traditional techniques of woodcut and intaglio and the more recently developed lithography and screenprinting . It will provide you with information about the basic history and technological developments of the techniques, as well as how the combination of years and technology has changed the approach artists take towards them. This site was created as the final research project of an art history class at Northwestern University concerning the development of Renaissance Printmaking. We hope that it answers any questions you may have and that you enjoy your experience here. If you have any ideas about how this site can be improved, or just would like to share your reactions, please feel free to

An introduction by Roger Butler, Senior Curator of Australian Prints, National Gallery of Australia.
The first prints by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists were not produced until the late 1960's, and it was not until the 1970's that a sustained interest in this 'new' technique developed. Originally the impetuous for experimentation was from non-indigenous art advisors, and later, publishers of limited edition prints. For many Aboriginal artists the use of printmaking methods was like an extension of traditional practice. The engraving of wood and linoblocks is a similar process to the incising of designs on stone or the surfaces of wooden sculptures and utilitarian objects. The sequential overprinting of colours in screenprinting is paralleled in the way traditional bark paintings are realised, and the same chalky opaque colours can be obtained. Concurrently with this development in traditional homelands was the emergence of a generation of urban-based Aboriginal artists who had trained in Western art traditions and techniques. Art schools and print workshops also began to invite Aboriginal artists to participate in their programmes. More recently print workshops have been established by a number of Aboriginal communities. Since the early 1980's prints by Aboriginal artists have been widely exhibited both in Australia and overseas. The success of exhibitions such as New Tracks Old Land and the marketing of works through The Australian Art Print Network has vastly increased the accessibility and public appreciation of prints by Aboriginal artists.

Welcome to the Art Department of the University of Mississippi
The Art Department is dedicated to education, research and service in the visual arts. Our faculty of visual artists, designers, art historians, and art educators provide a stimulating educational environment that encourages and develops a visually literate student. Students in the Art Department have access to a variety of media in the context of a liberal arts education. Ceramics, painting, printmaking, graphic design, computer graphics, art history, and art education are all available for concentrated studies in either a B.A. or B.F.A. program. Graduate students have emphasis areas in ceramics, sculpture, painting, printmaking, art education, and art history. Specific information is available in the Degree Programs section. The Art Department is currently housed in two buildings and utilizes another building to house the photography studio. Recent expansions in the Old Chemistry building have allowed for additional studio space in drawing, sculpture, the wood shop, and added graduate studios. The Bryant Hall Gallery was significantly improved over the 1999 summer, adding additional square footage and wallspace, a security system for the entire gallery, and the revival of the original tile flooring from 1918.

Barbara Rosenthal
Dancers in my Hand (detail) When Rosey and I married in 1980, he came with an etching studio. I was a school teacher, who also loved drawing and painting. Now I had a whole new world to explore. Over the years I have studied many intaglio, relief and mono- print techniques, selecting the ones best suited to a particular subject. My work is based on observations of the physical world, subjective explorations of what it means to be human, and pure whimsey. I now combine my art and teaching skills when giving printmaking workshops. Rosey Rosenthal
