Fake Pentium II Processors By Gabriel Torres Is this becoming a tradition, or what? After fake Pentiums and memory cache chips, now there's a fake Intel Pentium II processor. The method that's being used to create the fake Pentium II is the same one used to create the fake Pentium Classic: re-marking. This consists of removing the sticker on the original processor and substituting another inscription in its place. In this way, a Pentium II-233 can be 'transformed' into a Pentium II-266. The user has to be careful, in order not to pay more for an inferior processor. In the case of the Pentium Classic, the motherboard contributed to the fakery. Since the motherboard had to be configured manually in order to inform the processor of its clock multiplication – this was accomplished through the configuration jumpers – lots of users were deceived by this false marking on the processor, configuring the board as if it were the 'real' processor. For example, a Pentium-133 re-marked as a Pentium-166 could easily be configured to function externally on 166 MHz. In fact, most of the times, the processor was overclocked, without presenting problems.

Fake Pentium Processors By Gabriel Torres January 3rd, 1997 There are numerous adulterated Pentium processors on the market, coming in from God-knows-where. The method employed is simple re-marking; i.e. the surface of the 'original' processor is scraped lightly, and a new inscription is added. In this way, a Pentium-100 is just a scrape away from a Pentium-133! One of the typical symptoms of these fake processors is constant freezing and, mainly, low performance. Intel is intensely aware of the problem, and has already created a device to make adulteration more difficult. On the inner side of the processor – that square area between the terminals – there is a bas relief mark that is harder to tamper with. This mark is iPP for Pentium-100 processors and i133 for the Pentium-133. But the falsifiers are clever and already know about these marks. So they cover these marks on the inner side of the processor with a sticker – usually with the inscription VOID IF REMOVED, which technically means the loss of warranty in case this sticker is removed – to keep technicians from reading the manufacturer's inscription underneath them. Actually, Intel doesn't put stickers on its processors – this is the work of falsifiers. So be on the lookout!

Waves L2 Ultramaximizer For years, mastering engineers relied on computer-based mastering compressors to maximize a mix's overall level. Of the various software solutions, Waves' L1 Ultramaximizer is an established favorite. In 2000, Waves released its first hardware device, the L2 Ultramaximizer, and a praiseworthy entry it is, too. Like its software sibling, the L2 performs limiting and normalization without adding coloration. Thanks to Waves' Increased Digital Resolution (IDR) technology, the L2 provides dithering for word-length reduction without audible artifacts, while at the same time bringing low-level information (for example, reverb tails and the room sound) forward in the mix. The L2 lets you work in real time, which makes the it handy for any situation that requires limiting to avoid digital overs, such as recording rough mixes to DAT or CD-R. Besides the convenience of real-time processing, the L2 offers individual input level control over each channel, 48-bit internal processing, and support for sampling rates up to 96 kHz and word lengths up to 24 bits. You can use both digital outputs simultaneously, letting you master two devices at once. Despite the professional features, setting up and using the L2 is easy.

JOEMEEK C2 Photo-optical compressors have played a key role in many legendary recordings, but their high prices have kept them out of the hands of most personal-studio owners. With the release of the C2, Joemeek-long renowned for its great-sounding compressors-has brought high-quality, stereo-optical compression to the rest of us. This green, half-rackspace unit can give its more expensive brethren a run for their money in many compression applications. We found it particularly effective for processing guitars and drums, but it also performed admirably on vocal, bass, and keyboard tracks. To keep the price low, the folks at Joemeek designed the C2 with a minimal but functional set of controls. From the front panel, you can adjust the amount of compression, the attack and release times, and the input and output levels. The ratio (which ranges from 2:1 to 14:1) does not have its own dedicated control. Instead, it's governed by the input level. Overall, we found the C2 to be smooth sounding, quiet, easy to use, and, most important, a great value. In most years, those attributes would be enough to make it the hands-down winner, but this year we nevertheless had a close race between the C2 and the impressive Focusrite Platinum ComPounder. In the final analysis, though, the C2's combination of high-quality photo-optical sound and breakthrough price gave it the edge.

"Northwood" Enters The Arena
By, Dave Altavilla January 7, 2002 Intel and AMD's perpetual GHz. race continues in the new year, at a fevered pace that is almost more than the sluggish PC Industry can absorb. Soon new machines from the major OEMs, will line the shelves of various retailers, hoping to lure potential customers with the promise of earth shattering performance and features that no one should live without. Frankly, with the myriad of choices, flavors and clock speeds available to the consumer, it's no surprise that the average prospective PC customer now looks at only a few data points on which to base their decision making process. Let's face it, all things being equal, big fast drives, powerful graphics, and crisp displays, there really isn't much to consider when evaluating a new system or upgrade, with perhaps only two exceptions, "Clock Speed" and "Price Tag". More GHz. for the dollar, is most likely the strongest selling point for any PC OEM's marketing strategy. Now, before you begin to fill up my inbox with flame mail, please realize that I know (you are obviously an intelligent crowd since you are reading the pages of HotHardware) that you understand that this is a complete over-simplification of what really makes a PC perform. On the other hand, at a certain point, the brute force laws of nature (and physics) tend to take over and one has to admit, that 2.2GHz. just sounds damn fast, no matter how you slice it. With this in mind, it is easy to see why AMD had to shift gears back to their old "performance rating" strategy.

Global Layer Unix; technology trends in highspeed, low-latency LANs suggest convergence of hardware in Massively Parallel processors, MPPs, and Networks of Workstations, NOWs. Relative to many MPPs, NOWs offer more cost-effectiveness and scalability, and less hardware and software development time. Soon, the main difference between NOWs and MPPs will be OS software.
http://now.cs.berkeley.edu/Glunix/glunix.html
Download the GLUnix source code release, version 1.0a (Nov 5, 1997). Check the current runtime status of GLUnix. A GLUnix tutorial is available for new users. GLUnix man pages are now on-line. Run a parallel Mandelbrot program on GLUnix interactively! What is GLUnix? Recent technology trends in high-speed/low-latency local area networks has lead to a convergence of hardware in massively parallel processors (MPPs) and Networks of Workstations (NOWs). Relative to traditional MPPs, a NOW offers the potential for better cost-effectiveness, increased scalability, and decreased hardware and software development time. The main differentiating point between NOWs and MPPs will soon be the operating system software. Unfortunately, modern workstation operating systems do not provide the necessary support for efficient parallel program execution in an environment shared with sequential applications. The goal of our research is to pool resources in a NOW to provide better performance for both parallel and sequential applications. To realize this goal, the operating system must support gang-scheduling of parallel programs, identify idle resources in the network (CPU, disk capacity/bandwidth, memory capacity, network bandwidth), allow for process migration to support dynamic load balancing, and provide support for fast inter-process communication for both the operating system and user-level applications. Our system, called GLUnix, is built as a layer on top of existing operating systems. This strategy makes the system quickly portable, tracks vendor software upgrades, and reduces development time. Our work is an example of "higher-order" systems research where new systems can be built quickly by mapping new services onto the functionality provided by the layer beneath.
