David Stewart, chairman of ClubMac (the Irish Macintosh User Group) recently attended MeCon, a science fiction convention, in Belfast, Northern Ireland. At one panel session all three of the panelists James White, author of the "Sector General" series of novels; Michael Marshall Smith, author of "Only Forward," "Spares." and "One of Us"; and Ian McDonald, author of "Desolation Road," "Evolution's Shore," and "Sacrifice of Fools" were Mac users." Macs sometimes show up in Japanese comics. The most recent issue of "Pulp" magazine (in the "Voyeurs, Inc." series) has a surveillance crew using a LC 575 or MacTV in their van, notes Dave Oliver. Check it out at http://www.pulpmag.com/pulp_gifs/voyeur3.4.gif In the April 1999 Hold Everything catalog, there's a bondi blue iMac sitting on top of the "InterMetro Desk" (item two, page 20). All the surfaces of the desk are metallic looking and covered with black enamel; the legs are chrome and are also available in black. "It's a very 'modern' and hip looking desk, so naturally they want a modern and hip computer to sit on top of it," reports Paul Worthington. "The only problem is it's not turned on!"

Agiochook: Writers' Muse
As the number of white settlers rose in the early nineteenth century, word of the magnificent beauty of the mountains spread to American cities, and the region evolved into a destination for travelers hardy enough to make the difficult two-day trip from Boston. Writers especially were drawn to the mountains, to an America at its most wild and rugged and whose magnificent scenery provided an endless supply of natural metaphors. Moreover, events like the deaths of the Willey family in an avalanche in 1828 and the legend of Chocorua gave the region a powerful undercurrent of tragedy that was perfectly suited to the literary sensibilities of the time. And as these writers gained inspiration from the mountains, the most extraordinary thing happened: their works began to reflect the Abenaki themes of sacredness and transcendence in nature, and they saw and felt a spiritual presence in the landscape. As they drew on the mountains for their imagery, they discovered in the landscape larger meanings and made symbolic use of nature to express those meanings. And they began to portray the mountains as a kind of holy place, a sepulchre of nature.
