Cornered Writers Cornered Writers Questions? Comments? Self Publishing and Internet Book Marketing - New Options for Cornered Writers The Internet brings many new challenges and opportunities to writers, whether they are aspiring first-timers or published authors. The creator of this site is thankful for being able to make a living as a non-fiction writer, and seeks to even out the karma by giving something back. The articles posted under Cornered Writers are based on personal experience, attendance at industry conferences, and following trade journals such as Publishers Weekly. They do not (yet) encompass the whole experience of publishing in the Internet age, but further articles will be forthcoming. The Path to Publication in the New Millennium was published in the 2002-2003 Writer's Guide to Book Editors, Publisher's and Literary Agents. It outlines the advantages to today's writers of posting their unsold works on the Internet. POD- Print On Demand is the new approach to publishing that lets you place your books in full distribution for hundreds rather than thousands of dollars. POD changes everything about book production and distribution, but it changes nothing about book marketing.

Introduction
Writing a book is not easy, but it can be a hugely rewarding experience. Your enjoyment out of writing a book, and your audience's enjoyment out of reading the book depend a lot on a lot of factors, including who you have to guide you through the process. Below are some brief words of wisdom for those who wish to become authors or reviewers.
Finding the right person
If you are interested in participating in computer technical books—whether as a lead author, a contributor, tech reviewer, or peer/audience reviewer - your initial challenge lies in finding the right person within a publishing company who will help you pursue your interests. Publishers appreciate being contacted directly—whether about an idea for a title, or even criticism of a current book. Your contributions will only help us build better books, and even when the news is painful we appreciate this. Most publishers will have a catch-all way for you to get in touch with us—typically through our web site (links such as "do you want to review?," or "do you want to write?," or just "contact us."). The person culling through these messages will make sure that your note of interest is forwarded to the appropriate editor.

- It's important to be publishing. Publish your seminar papers, results of early research, and dissertation chapters. Not all publications are equal. The most highly esteemed are refereed journals. - Interdisciplinary scholars, consider sending your work to interdisciplinary journals. - To make publications contacts, attend the annual meetings associated with your discipline. Meet people, attend functions, and start correspondence with contacts. Offer to read others' work. Work the book events, and get familiar with what the different publishers are doing. - Common reasons why journals reject papers: - Subject inappropriate for journal. Do your homework and figure out which journals are right for your project.

What You Need To Know About Getting Published If you have just finished a writing project or have come up with an exciting idea for a book or an article, it is time to begin your search for a publisher. Finding the right place for your work requires careful research and planning, along with a healthy dose of persistence. Whether you are a writer of fiction or non-fiction, we'd like to share some of what we know to help you get started.
Seeking a publisher
Step 1: Make it the best it can be
A professionally prepared manuscript will not guarantee publication, but a sloppy, error-filled one will almost certainly be pushed aside. Think about the life of a publisher and you will realize that they simply don't have the time to struggle with a piece that has too many typographical errors or style deficiencies. Proofread your work very carefully. Here are some tips: Read out loud to find awkward phrases.

OUTSTANDING
Following is an e-mail I sent to the author. It speaks for itself. "I'm writing a novel and my wife gave your book (Idiot's Guide ...) to me as a Christmas gift. It is really outstanding. I thank you for sharing such a wealth of knowledge with the rest of us. It gives those of us, the uninitiated, a level of sophistication when approaching the market that we would not ordinarily have. I just finished reading the Complete Idiots Guide to Getting Published and I had to say thank you. The book is clear, to the point and all my questions. Using the advice I've come up with a nice query letter and book proposal. So far a few agents and three publishers have shown some interest. I don't know if any of this will come to anything but I know I wouldn't have gotten this far without this book.

Getting Published
Becoming a published writer can appear to be a rather daunting task for the novice author. However, by following a few simple guidelines, one can increase the likelihood of seeing one's work in print. Be aware of the market you are targeting
Do some research into what is currently being published. Pay attention to books published in your subject area. If you are merely reiterating something which is already in print, it is unlikely that you will be seriously considered for publication. Try to identify any gaps in the market and ensure that you have the means for effectively filling these. This advice particularly applies to writers of non-fiction.
Presenting your manuscript
It is highly unlikely that your work will be considered if it is not presented as a professional package. A manuscript should be presented in a manner which will be immediately attractive to the reader. It should be typewritten with double spacing on one side of A4 paper, with each page accordingly numbered. Ensure that you retain at least one good copy of your manuscript.

You are here: booktrust.org.uk fact sheets Getting published Be aware of the market you are targeting Remember that there are over 100,000 books published each year in the UK. Don't let this put you off writing a book, but write because you feel you have a genuine contribution to make in a certain field, not just because you want to become rich and famous. Above all, remember that publishers, like any business, exist to make a profit. You are much more likely to get your work published if you accept this and approach the task in a business-like and professional manner. This doesn't mean that you have to sacrifice your artistic vision or 'dumb-down' - far from it - but experience has shown us that the key to getting published lies in convincing a publisher that your book has a potential market, that you are the best person to write it, and that you have done your research. So we'll repeat the first rule of getting your work published: Be aware of the market you are targeting Do some research into what is currently being published. Find out about books published in your subject area, and make sure that you are clear about what makes your book different. If you are merely repeating something which is already in print, it is unlikely that you will be seriously considered for publication. Try to identify any gaps in the market and ensure that you have the means for effectively filling these. This advice particularly applies to writers of non-fiction.

34. Book Publishing FAQ
About agents, publishers, deals, and proposals.Category Arts Writers Resources FAQs, Help, and Tutorials...... People go into publishing because they love ideas and writing an d working with writersand take This is the standard advice of most getting published manuals.
http://www.caderbooks.com/pubfaq.html
1. Do I need an agent to sell my book to a publisher? Probably, but not necessarily.
Plenty of books are still found and bought out of what publishers called the "slush pile," (or manuscripts that sometimes are known more politely as having come in "over the transom," though rare is the transom in a publisher's office these days). Plenty, yes, but hardly the overwhelming majority. And those that do get bought this way tend to be the more modest purchases.
The large and well-known publishing houses deal almost exclusively with agents, and many simply will not look at a proposal that is not submitted by an agent. You have to realize that the average house is dealing with an overwhelming number of submission s. One of an editor's main jobs is to keep in close contact with a group of agents, letting them know what kind of books that editor is looking for, and getting them used to that editor's taste.
Ideally, a good agent will help you put the final polish on your proposal, and will get it directly to the editors and publishers most likely to buy your kind of book and most likely to publish such a book successfully.
This is the ideal scenario. The less than ideal truth is that agents too are dealing with an overwhelming amount of proposals. To prosper, agents need to move a lot of product, and they are often unable to lavish the kind of attention that authors might sometimes expect on a project. The best agents know how to stick with a project they believe in until the proper home is found, but many may run out of steam before reaching the ideal publisher.

When submitting a manuscript:
Choose the publisher carefully as this will save you time and money. Research the type and style of books published by different imprints in your local bookshop or library, or obtain publishers' catalogues. Choose a publisher who publishes the type of book you have written. Check whether publishers accept unsolicited manuscripts, many do not. Many will not accept manuscripts unless through an agent.

Getting Published
Please read through this before sending us a manuscript! Sorry, but we do not accept manuscripts, queries, or other submissions via email. If you are interested in getting published, we recommend you start with the following: Go to a bookstore or library and find books that are similar to your book idea. If your idea is completely unique, find something in a closely related field or subject area. Consult the Literary Market Place (LMP) at your local library. Find the current address and phone number of the publisher(s) you found. Contact them and find out if they have any submissions guidelines they can send you, if they prefer to work with agents (or not), and if they prefer query letters. For children's books, keep in mind that many publishers prefer to choose the illustrator, so samples do not need to be sent (unless you want to be considered as an illustrator as well). Follow the guidelines that the publisher gives you. NEVER send original artwork or manuscripts; ALWAYS send a SASE (Self-Addressed, Stamped Envelope) for return of materials and/or a response letter. Please be patient. Publishing houses are continuously working on projects at many different stages. Some will have their titles chosen years in advance. It may take awhile to respond to your submission and, if chosen, it may be awhile in the future before your book is complete.

Paper $15.00 0-226-28844-7 Spring 2001 Writers and publishers depend on one another, but it often seems as if they speak two different languages. Getting It Published is a lively, insider's guide to academic publishinga book that will tell you not only how publishing works, but how you can make it work for you. Written by a veteran editor with experience in both the university press and commercial worlds, the book fields the big questions in a scholar's life. Why do editors choose some books and decline others? How does a writer decide where to submit a project? How does the review process work, and why is it necessary? What can an author expect from a publishing housebefore, during, and after publication? William Germano answers these questions and more, and along the way, offers encouragement, tips, and warnings. This savvy guide unravels the mysteries of publishing and walks you through the process from start to finish. You'll learn how to think about your book before you submit it and what you need to know about your contract. With wit and humor, Germano also addresses some of the finer points of publishing etiquette, including howand how notto approach a busy editor and how to work with other publishing professionals on matters of design, marketing, and publicity. Graduate students, recent Ph.D.'s, and experienced authors alike will appreciate the chapters on "Quotations, Pictures, and Other Headaches" and on compiling and editing collections and anthologies.
